Capturing CO2 Emissions in the George C. Wallace Tunnel: A Case Study

This paper describes the design of a ventilation system to be paired with a carbon capture system. The ventilation system utilizes the geometry of the George C. Wallace tunnel, located in the City of mobile, Alabama, USA to capture and redirect emissions to a direct air capture (DAC) device to sequester 25% of the total CO2 mass generated from inside the tunnel. The total CO2 mass rate for the westbound traffic between the week-day hours of 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. has been estimated between 2,300 to 3,000 lbs./hr. By sequestering these emissions, the overall surrounding air quality was shown to be improved to a level that mirrors that from the pre-US industrial era of 270 ppm.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a motoneuron degenerative disease that is challenging to diagnose and presents with considerable variability in *** identification and enhanced understanding of symptomatic patterns could aid in diagnosis and provide an avenue for monitoring disease *** of the m SOD1 G93 A mouse model provides control of the confounding environmental factors and genetic heterogeneity seen in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients,while investigating underlying disease-induced *** the present study,we performed a longitudinal behavioral assessment paradigm and identified an early hindlimb symptom,resembling the common gait abnormality foot drop,along with an accompanying forelimb compensatory mechanism in the m SOD1 G93 A *** these initial changes,m SOD1 mice displayed a temporary hindlimb compensatory mechanism resembling an exaggerated steppage *** the disease progressed,these compensatory mechanisms were not sufficient to sustain fundamental locomotor parameters and more severe deficits *** next applied these initial findings to investigate the inherent variability in B6 SJL m SOD1 G93 A *** identified four behavioral variables that,when combined in a cluster analysis,identified two subpopulations with different disease progression rates：a fast progression group and a slow progression *** behavioral assessment paradigm,with its analytical approaches,provides a method for monitoring disease progression and detecting m SOD1 subgroups with different disease *** affords researchers an opportunity to search for genetic modifiers or other factors that likely enhance or slow disease *** factors are possible therapeutic targets with the potential to slow disease progression and provide insight into the underlying pathology and disease mechanisms.

Experimental evidence indicates that chronic mechanical sub-occlusion of the intestine may damage the enteric nervous system （ENS）, although data in humans are lacking. We here describe the first case of enteric degenerative neuropathy related to a congenital obstruction of the gut. A 3-year and 9-mo old girl began to complain of vomiting, abdominal distension, constipation with air-fluid levels at plane abdominal radiology. Her subsequent medical history was characterized by 3 operations： the first showed dilated duodeno-jejunal loops in the absence of occlusive lesions; the second （2 years later） was performed to obtain full-thickness biopsies of the dilated intestinal loops and revealed hyperganglionosis at histopathology; the third （9 years after the hyperganglionosis was identified） disclosed a Ladd＇s band which was removed and the associated gut malrotation was corrected. Repeated intraoperative full-thickness biopsies showed enteric degenerative neuropathy along with reduced interstitial cells of Cajal network in dilated loops above the obstruction and a normal neuromuscular layer below the Ladd＇s band. One year after the latest surgery the patient tolerated oral feeding and did well, suggesting that congenital （partial） mechanical obstruction of the small bowel in humans can evoke progressive adaptive changes of the ENS which are similar to those found in animal models of intestinal mechanical occlusion. Such ENS changes mimic neuronal abnormalities observed in intestinal pseudoobstruction.

Irritable bowel syndrome(IBS) is a highly prevalent medical condition that adversely affects patient quality of life and constitutes a significant economic burden on healthcare resources. A large proportion of patients suffer from the constipation subtype of IBS(IBS-C), most commonly afflicting older individuals and those with a lower socioeconomic status. Conventional pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatment options have limited efficacies and/or significant adverse events, which lead to increased long-term health care expenditures. Failure to effectively treat IBS-C patients over the past decades has largely been due to a poor understanding of disease pathophysiology, lack of a global view of the patient, and an inappropriate selection of patients and treatment endpoints in clinical trials. In recent years, however, more effective and safer drugs have been developed for the treatment of IBS-C. The advancement in the area of pharmacologic treatment is based on new knowledge of the pathophysiologic basis of IBS-C and the development of drugs with increased selectivity within pharmacologic classes with recognized efficacies. This narrative review covers the spectrum of available drugs and their mechanisms of action, as well as the efficacy and safety profiles of each as determined in relevant clinical trials that have investigated treatment options for IBS-C and chronic constipation. A brief summary of laxative-based treatment options is presented, followed by up-to-date assessments for three classes of drugs: prokinetics, prosecretory agents, and bile acid modulators.

Pollution control structures may be adapted to enhance the removal of nutrients and pesticides from water. Charcoal-like material is known to sorb organic compounds in solution, including atrazine, a herbicide used to control broadleaf weeds, which persists in soils and can migrate from soils to water bodies, ultimately affecting water quality. The primary goal of this study was to investigate if activated charcoal cloths (single-weave, SW;double-weave, DW;and knitted, KT) are more efficient to remove atrazine from aqueous solutions than a cloth without activated charcoal (control) currently used in pollution control structures. The approach consisted of sorption kinetics, flow-through, and desorption/degradation experiments using 50 and 1000μg L-1 atrazine solutions. Results showed that within 30 min of contact time, the control sorbed from 22.6 to 36.1% of atrazine in solution;whereas the activated charcoal cloths sorbed from 76 to 99% of atrazine in solution (SW > KT > DW). The flow-through ex-periments showed that the SW sorbed 88.2, 76.1, and 52.2%of atrazine at the contact time of 0.75, 5, and 10 min, respectively. After 28 days of incubation, previously sorbed atrazine on the SW cloth did not degrade and mproving atrazine removal in water in pollution control structures.

Background Heme-oxygenase 1 （HO-1） is a rate-limiting enzyme in the degradation of heme to bilirubin, ferritin and carbon monoxide （CO） and may have significant anti-inflammatory function. The HO-1 gene promoter region shows microsatellite polymorphism with different （GT）n repeats, reported to differently induce gene expression, with the short allele associated with higher gene expression. We measured the acute inflammatory response using coronary artery bypass surgery （CABG） as a well-characterized and uniform stimulus and examined the correlation between levels of IL-6, C-reactive protein （CRP） and fibrinogen and their relationship to HO-1 genotype. methods Two hundred and seventy-five consecutive patients undergoing CABG were genotyped for the HO-1 promoter polymorphism using PCR and automated DNA capillary sequencer. IL-6, CRP and fibrinogen were measured at baseline and 6, 24, 48, 72, 96 and 120 hours after CABG. Results Complete IL-6, CRP and fibrinogen measures were available in 220 patients. Before surgery IL-6 levels showed a strong correlation with CRP and fibrinogen （ r = 0. 48, P 〈 0. 0001 ; r = 0. 41, P 〈 0. 0001 respectively）, with a significant correlation between CRP and fibrinogen （r=0. 61, P 〈 0. 0001 ）. All three acute phase reactants showed a significant increase after CABG. After surgery, peak IL-6 was strongly correlated with peak CRP （r=0. 34, P =0.0009） but not with peak fibrinogen （r=0. 15, P =0. 13 ）, while peak CRP and peak fibrinogen were significantly correlated （r = 0. 15, P 〈 0. 0001 ）. HO-1 allelic repeats ranged from 22- 42, with （GT）25 and （GT）32 being the two most common alleles, and subsequently divided into three groups according to previous published work：〈 30 （GT） n were designated as S （short） , 30 - 37 （GT） n as m （middle） and long repeats with 〉 37 （GT） n as L （long） ; allele frequency 0. 35, 0. 58 and 0.07 respectively.
