Introduction: In the setting of an extra-adrenal malignancy, it is a recognized clinical challenge to try and distinguish a benign adrenal mass from a metastatic deposit. Current non-invasive diagnostic tools for adrenal gland evaluation include CT, MRI, PET and PET-CT. Diagnostic interpretative error can occur as evaluations rarely have complete cytologic or histologic correlation for concordance purposes. Aims: To establish the performance characteristics of non-contrast CT attenuation values (Hounsfield units-HU) and the optimal PET-CT maximum standard uptake value (SUVmax) for predicting adrenal malignancy when correlated with adrenal gland endoscopic ultrasound fine needle aspiration (EUS FNA) cytology results. Methods: A prospectively maintained EUS database was reviewed to identify consecutive patients who underwent a left adrenal gland FNA. Non-contrast CT attenuation values and SUVmax scores were calculated. EUS FNA cytology results were used as the reference standard for determining the presence of benign versus malignant adrenal gland status. Results: Sixty-two patients (69 ± 11 years) underwent adrenal EUS FNA, 34 (54.8%) of whom had a clinically suspected or established extra-adrenal malignancy. Non-invasive imaging was suggestive of abnormal adrenal morphology or altered PET-CT FDG activity in 45 (72.6%) patients. Elevated attenuation values (≥10 HU) by non-enhanced CT had a sensitivity and specificity of 100% and 34.6%, respectively. The SUVmax for malignant altered morphology was significantly higher than that for benign lesions [(8.5 ± 3.1 vs 3.3 ± 0.7;(p = 0.0001)]. ROC curve analysis indicated that an optimum cutoff SUVmax of ≥4.1 (AUC 0.92) yielded the best power distinction for malignancy with a sensitivity and specificity of 89% and 100%. Conclusion: When evaluating altered adrenal morphology by non-invasive methods, the performance characteristics of elevated CT attenuation values are suboptimal. But by adopting a SUVmax cut-off value of ≥4.1

The storage and repair bandwidth tradeoff is an important issue in distributed storage systems(DSSs) where large scale data are stored in multiple nodes with erasure coding to ensure reliability. There are lots of studies on the DSS model with multiple clusters where the repair bandwidths from intra-cluster and cross-cluster nodes are differentiated to improve repair efficiency based on the realistic network topological structures. At the same time, separate nodes are also prevalent due to the variety of practical networks, but the work on the cluster DSS model with multiple separate nodes is insufficient, which is a main motivation of this paper. We formulate the tradeoff bound between storage repair bandwidth for a heterogeneous DSS model consisting of clusters and separate nodes by analyzing the min-cuts of heterogeneous information flow graphs corresponding to the orders of failed nodes. Additionally, the tradeoff bounds are investigated in multiple aspects when the repair bandwidth constraints and the amount of separate nodes vary, ***, a class of regenerating codes are illustrated to achieve the tradeoff in the heterogeneous cases.

The landmark Massachusetts Male Ageing Study shed new light on the prevalence of erectile dysfunction （ED） and drew attention to ED as a disease of ageing. Over the years, ED has been linked to the development of cardiovascular disease （CVD） in some patients. There is clear evidence that ED and CVD share and have a similar risk factor profile. CVD is one of the most recognizable causes of mortality and early detection coupled with prevention of mortality from CVD has been the prime interest of many researchers. Consequently, there has been a multidisciplinary curiosity regarding the proposal to use ED as a marker for future CVD. I n fact, there have been several proposals to use ED as a screening tool for future CVD. We performed a comprehensive Search of two main databases--PubMed and Cochrane Library using a combination of keywords such as acute myocardial infarction, coronary artery disease （CAD） and ED. Journal articles from January 2000 to June 2011 were reviewed. We included all articles discussing the relationship between ED and CVD in the English language. All the relevant randomized controlled trials, cohort and retrospective studies, and review articles were included in our overall analysis in an attempt to answer the question whether all patients with ED should be clinically evaluated for CVD. The results showed a link between ED and the development of future CVD in some patients, but ED was not shown to be an independent risk predictor that is any better than the traditional Framingham risk factors. Screening for CVD may, however, be rewarding in younger patients with severe ED and in patients with concurrent CVD risk factors.

In spite of increasing attention on Chinese aerosol, there has never been a country-wide survey of its general characteristics. This paper presents elemental data for aerosol at 23 sites in and around China, mostly drawn from the literature, and shows some of the large-scale patterns. Al, Na, and Se are used to represent the crustal, marine, and pollution components, respectively. Most of the patterns are aligned in SW-NE. Al and Na are highest to the NW and the SE, respectively, and their ratio changes rapidly near the coast. Se has a broad maximum over Central China, and the Se/Al ratio （an indicator of pollution vs. crustal aerosol） increases progressively from the NW to the SE. A simple index for simulating pollution aerosol, which uses population density, annual precipitation, and mean wind speed, adequately reproduces the large-scale pattern of pollution aerosol and shows how crustal Al in the NW gradually gives way to flyash Al toward the SE.

Development and Applications of Dome A-DEM in Antarctic Ice Sheet

Dome A, the highest dome of East Antarctic Ice Sheet, is being an area focused by international Antarctic community after Chinese Antarctic Expedition finally reached there in 2005, and with the ongoing International Polar Year （IPY） during August 2007. In this paper two data processing methods are used together to generate two 100-m cell size digital elevation models （DEMs） of the Dome A region （Dome A-DEM） by using Cokriging method to interpolate the ICESat GLAS data, with Ihde-DEM as a constraint. It provides fundamental data to glaciological and geophysical investigation in this area. The Dome A-DEM was applied to determining the ice-sheet surface elevations and coordinates of the south and north summits, defining boundaries of basins and ice ftowlines, deducing subglacial topography, and mapping surface slope and aspect in Dome A region. The DEM shows there are two （north and south） summits in Dome A region. The coordinate and the surface elevation of the highest point （the north summit） are 80°21＇29.86＂S, 77°21＇50.29＂E and 4092.71±1.43m, respectively. The ice thickness and sub-ice bedrock elevation at north summit are 2420m and 1672m, respectively. Dome A region contains four drainage basins that meet together near the south summit. Ice ftowlines, slope and aspect in detail are also derived using the DEM.

Abstract The unfolded protein response(UPR)is an important protective and compensatory strategy used during endoplasmic reticulum stress caused by factors including glucose starvation,low pH,or heat ***,there is very little information on the possible role(s)of the UPR under adverse conditions experienced by marine *** observed that rough endoplasmic reticulum(ER)was dramatically expanded and numerous autophagosomes were accumulated in the intestinal cells of sea cucumbers,Apostichopus japonicus,under heat stress(4 h at 25°C compared with 15°C controls).Moreover,heat stress led to sharp increases in the relative transcript and protein expression levels of two primary ER chaperones:the endoplasmic reticulum resident protein 29-like(ERP29)and protein disulfi de-isomerase A6-like(PDIA6).These results suggest a potential adaptive mechanism to deal with heat-induced stress in sea cucumber intestine.
