Case study approach to modeling historical disinfection by-product exposure in Iowa drinking waters

In the 1980 s, a case–control epidemiologic study was conducted in Iowa（UsA） to analyze the association between exposure to disinfection by-products（DBPs） and bladder cancer risk. Trihalomethanes（ThMs）, the most commonly measured and dominant class of DBPs in drinking water, served as a primary metric and surrogate for the full DBP *** ThM exposure was calculated, based on rough estimates of past levels in Iowa. To reduce misclassification, a follow-up study was undertaken to improve estimates of past ThM levels and to re-evaluate their association with cancer risk. In addition, the risk associated with haloacetic acids, another class of DBPs, was examined. In the original analysis, surface water treatment plants were assigned one of two possible ThM levels depending on the point of chlorination. The re-assessment considered each utility treating surface or groundwater on a case-by-case basis. Multiple treatment/disinfection scenarios and water quality parameters were considered with actual DBP measurements to develop estimates of past levels. The highest annual average ThM level in the re-analysis was156 μg/L compared to 74 μg/L for the original analysis. This allowed the analysis of subjects exposed at higher levels（〉 96 μg/L）. The re-analysis established a new approach, based on case studies and an understanding of the water quality and operational parameters that impact DBP formation, for determining historical exposure.

sand wave migration near the southeastern corner of Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, UsA

sand waves of approximately 2 m in height were observed to migrate nearly 40 m with counterclockwise rotation between two bathymetric surveys performed three months apart near the southeastern corner of Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. The region is characterized by strong tidal currents, intermittent energetic surface wave events, and shallow water with local depth ranging from 2 to 7 m. This study uses the process-based model, Delft3D, with a three-dimensional approach to examine the sand wave dynamics by incorporating surface waves, winds, currents, and bathymetric observations. The model successfully simulates sand wave migration in comparisons to observations. Model sensitivity analyses show that the sand wave migration reduces by 65% with the absence of the surface waves. The modeled sand wave migration speed is correlated with the tidal current shields parameter, and sharp increases in migration speed occur when the wave-driven shields parameter increases in response to energetic surface wave events. The combined effect of tides, surface waves, and bathymetry is the origin of the rotational aspect of the sand wave, using the shields parameter as an indicator of tidal currents and surface wave influence on sand wave dynamics.

Esophageal cancer remains as one of the top ten causes of cancer-related death in the United *** primary risk factor for esophageal adenocarcinoma is the presence of Barrett’s esophagus(BE).Currently,identification of early dysplasia in BE patients requires an experienced endoscopist performing a diagnostic endoscopy with random 4-quadrant biopsies taken every 1-2 cm using appropriate surveillance ***,there is significant difficulty for endoscopists to distinguish different forms of dysplastic BE as well as early adenocarcinoma due to subtleties in mucosal texture and *** obstacle makes taking multiple random biopsies necessary for appropriate surveillance and *** advances in artificial intelligence(AI)can assist gastroenterologists in identifying areas of likely dysplasia within identified BE and perform targeted biopsies,thus decreasing procedure time,sedation time,and risk to the patient along with maximizing potential biopsy *** using AI represents an exciting frontier in endoscopic medicine,recent studies are limited by selection bias,generalizability,and lack of robustness for universal *** AI can be reliably employed for BE in the future,these issues need to be fully addressed and tested in prospective,randomized *** after that is achieved,will the benefit of AI in those with BE be fully realized.

A study was conducted in four compartments of a polycarbonate greenhouse at Gainesville,FL, UsA to investigate how a soybean(Glycine max L. Merr.) cultivar, Maverick(maturity group III, indeterminate), responded to three elevated temperatures, ELT,(day/night of 34/26 °C, 38/30 °C, and 42/34 °C) in comparison to a control growth temperature(30/22 °C).Carbon dioxide(CO_2) concentration was maintained at 700 μmol mol^(-1) in each compartment by a processor controlled air-sampling and CO_2-injection system. Three sequential experiments were conducted at different times of year(summer, autumn, and early spring)to investigate the effect of intensity, timing, and duration of ELT on soybean node number,internode elongation, mainstem length, and number of pods set per plant. At the control temperature, the soybean plants grown in the polycarbonate greenhouse were taller than field-grown plants. When plants were grown under continuous ELT applied soon after sowing or at initial flowering, the number of nodes increased with increasing ELT intensity,whereas the length of individual internodes decreased. When ELT treatment was applied during the beginning of flowering stage(R1–R2) or earlier, more nodes were produced and the length of affected internodes was decreased. When the ELT was imposed later at reproductive stage R5+ just before the beginning of seed filling, effects on node numbers and internode lengths were negligible. short-term(10-day) duration of ELT applied at four stages from V3 to R5+ did not significantly affect final mean numbers of nodes or mean mainstem lengths. Possible mechanisms of elevated temperature effects on soybean internode elongation and node number(internode number) are discussed. Total pod numbers per plant increased linearly with mainstem node numbers and mainstem ***, total pod numbers per plant were greatest at 34/26 °C rather than at the control temperature of 30/22 °C(and remained high at 38/30 °C). Orthobiologics: An Updated Definition

Orthobiologics is a subset of regenerative medicine, which focuses on treating the musculoskeletal system. The main therapeutics utilized include platelet-rich plasma, stem cells, exosomes, and scaffolding matrices. Continuous discoveries and new innovations have led to an increase in both popularity and usage of these therapeutics by various medical and scientific communities. Despite its potential, however, the field is viewed with significant skepticism secondary to poor documentation, a lack of standardization, vague nomenclature, disorganized research protocols, and an absence of a clear understanding of the mechanisms underlying the effects of the various therapeutics. This ambiguity led to a surge in direct-to-consumer marketing by “stem Cell Clinics”, putting patient’s health at risk and further delegitimizing the field. These shortcomings led to a recent push for standardization by both professionals and organizations alike;a move that has put Orthobiologics on the path toward becoming a guideline-driven, protocol-based, and research-backed specialty. And with these rapid changes comes the need for an updated definition of “Orthobiologics”, a crucial element of any legitimate and standardized medical field.
