The assessment of structural changes on optic nerve head and macula in primary open angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension

AIM：To assess morphological changes in macula, retinal nerve fiber layer （RNFL） and optic nevre head （ONH） of cases with primary open angle glaucoma （POAG） and ocular hypertension （OH） with spectral domain optic coherence tomography （OCT）.METHODS：This study included 109 eyes from 62 POAG patients, 50 eyes from 30 OH patients, and 101 eyes from 53 healthy volunteers. Data gained by OCT were compared with perimetry indexes. ONH, RNFL and macula analysis were performed for all subjects. Rim area, disc area,average cup/disc （C/D） ratio, vertical C/D ratio, cup volume data were recorded during ONH analysis. Average RNFL thickness and the thickness of four quadrants （superior,inferior, nasal and temporal） was established in *** total, nine macular quadrants involving the foveal region mentioned in the Early Treatment Diabetic Treatment Study（ETDRS） template were measured, and average macular thickness and macular volume data were recorded during macula analysis. Differences between groups were evaluated with the one-way ANOVA test. Tukey’s multiple comparison test was performed to detect difference between ***-operating characteristic （ROC） analysis was done for early stage POAG patients to establish sensitivity and specificity of chosen parameters in early stage *** under the receiver operating characteristic （AUROC）values were calculated to compare ROC ***：Statistically significant differences were found in all ONH parameters, except optic disc area. Neuroretinal rim area was identified as the parameter with the highest difference between groups （F=21.72, P〈0.05）. The highest correlation between ONH parameters and perimetry was observed at neuroretinal rim region （r=0.487）. Inferior RNFL thickness was established as the parameter with the highest difference between groups among RNFL parameters. In the mean of all glaucoma patients, the highest correlation between data handled with OCT and mean deviation was observed in RNFL thickness.

In the present study, a statistical investigation is carried out to explore whether there is a relationship between the critical frequency （foEs） of the sporadic-E layer that is occasionally seen on the E region of the ionosphere and the quasi- biennial oscillation （QBO） that flows in the east-west direction in the equatorial stratosphere. Multiple regression model as a statistical tool was used to determine the relationship between variables. In this model, the stationarity of the variables （foEs and QBO） was firstly analyzed for each station （Cocos Island, Gibilmanna, Niue Island, and Tahiti）. Then, a co- integration test was made to determine the existence of a long-term relationship between QBO and foes. After verifying the presence of a long-term relationship between the variables, the magnitude of the relationship between variables was further determined using the multiple regression model. As a result, it is concluded that the variations in foEs were explainable with QBO measured at 10 hPa altitude at the rate of 69%, 94%, 79%, and 58% for Cocos Island, Gibilmanna, Niue Island, and Tahiti stations, respectively. It is observed that the variations in foes were explainable with QBO measured at 70 hPa altitude at the rate of 66%, 69%, 53%, and 47% for Cocos Island, Gibilmanna, Niue Island, and Tahiti stations, respectively.

AIM: To investigate the complications of intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide (IVTA) for the treatment of macular edema, and to determine the risk factors for intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation. METHODS: Charts of patients with macular edema secondary to branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO), diabetic retinopathy and uveitis who had received IVTA injections were reviewed to document its complications. IOP elevation was defined as a pressure of ≥24mmHg at some point during follow-up. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to characterize baseline risk factors for this elevation. RESULTS: The study included 111 eyes of 65 female and 46 male patients with a mean follow-up of (11.6±5.1) months. Of the 111 eyes, 52 (46.8%) had macular edema secondary to BRVO, 44 (39.6%) had clinically significant diabetic macular edema (CSDME) and 15 (13.5%) had non-infectious uveitis with macular edema. IOP was recorded ≥24mmHg in 38 eyes (34.2%) during the follow-up. Higher baseline IOP (P =0.022), younger age (P =0.003), and male gender (P = 0.014) were significant risk factors for IOP elevation after IVTA injection. Eyes with prior vitrectomy were less likely to have IOP elevation (P =0.054). Two eyes (5.2% of eyes with increased IOP) underwent trabeculectomy, and 9 eyes (16.3% of the phakic eyes) necessitated cataract surgery. Other complications included branch vein occlusion (1.8%), sterile endophthalmitis (0.9%) and pseudohypopyon (0.9%). CONCLUSION: IVTA has side effects with IOP elevation and cataract formation being the two most common. A subset of patients is more prone to developing increased IOP following IVTA, namely, younger male patients with higher baseline IOP.

A novel method for simultaneous analysis of particle size and mineralogy for Chang’E-5 lunar soil with minimum sample consumption

The successful return of lunar soil samples from the northern Oceanus Procellarum by the Chang’E 5(CE-5) mission has provided unprecedented ground-truth information for the previously unexplored region of the Moon. In particular, the particle size and mineral constituents of the CE-5 soil samples are of critical importance to interpret remote sensing data. With a Raman-based particle analysis system, we show that the particle size properties and mineral constituents of the CE-5 soil can be simultaneously determined with a small sample size(ca. 30 μg). The CE-5 sample scooped from the lunar surface has an overall small size between 0.4 μm and 73.9 μm(mean=3.5 μm), and mainly consists of pyroxene(39.4%), plagioclase(37.5%), olivine(9.8%), Fe-Ti oxides(1.9%), glass(8.3%) and other minor or trace phases. The results are consistent with previous analyses with larger sample sizes. In addition to minimum sample consumption, this method requires very little sample preparation, and can rapidly build a large database with each particle precisely traceable. Therefore, this novel technique is particularly suitable for the analysis of future returned soil samples from extraterrestrial bodies.

Additive manufacturing(AM),also known as three-dimensional(3D)printing,is thriving as an effective and robust method in fabricating architected piezoelectric structures,yet most of the commonly adopted printing techniques often face the inherent speed-accuracy trade-off,limiting their speed in manufacturing sophisticated parts containing micro-/nanoscale ***,stabilized,photo-curable resins comprising chemically functionalized piezoelectric nanoparticles(PiezoNPs)were formulated,from which microscale architected 3D piezoelectric structures were printed continuously via micro continuous liquid interface production(μCLIP)at speeds of up to~60μm s^(-1),which are more than 10 times faster than the previously reported stereolithography-based *** 3D-printed functionalized barium titanate(f-BTO)composites reveal a bulk piezoelectric charge constant d33 of 27.70 pC N^(-1) with the 30 wt%***,rationally designed lattice structures that manifested enhanced,tailorable piezoelectric sensing performance as well as mechanical flexibility were tested and explored in diverse flexible and wearable self-powered sensing applications,e.g.,motion recognition and respiratory monitoring.

BACKGROUND： Some research exists on the effect of non-pharmacological approaches for labor pain relief However, there is limited information about effectiveness of breathing exercises in pregnant women to reduce maternal pain during labor. OBJECTIVE： To determine whether breathing exercises for pregnant women during the second stage of labor have beneficial effects on maternal pain, duration of labor, and the first-minute Appearance, Pulse, Grimace, Activity and Respiration （APGAR） scores. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS AND INTERVENTIONS： This randomized clinical trial involved 250 pregnant women, who were randomly divided into two groups： intervention group （IG; n = 125） and control group （CG; n = 125）. IG received one session breathing exercise training and performed breathing exercises during the second stage of labor versus the CG that did not receive any breathing exercise training. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES： The effects of breathing exercises on maternal pain were determined by Visual Analogue Scale （VAS）, duration of the second stage of labor, and the first-minute APGAR scores. RESULTS： The mean age of the participants was （23.2 _＋ 4.2）（range： 18 to 42） years. Both IG and CG had similar baseline characteristics in terms of age, education level, occupation, and smoking （P 〉 0.05）. The mean VAS scores of IG and CG were （88.2 ＋_ 6.3） and （90.5 ＋_ 7.0）, respectively （P 〈 0.001）. The duration of the second stage of labor was （369.6 ＋ 92.0） s for IG and （440.7 ＋ 142.5） s for CG （P 〈 0.001 ）. The mean first-minute APGAR scores were （8.84 ＋ 0.50） for IG and （8.73 ＋ 0.89） for CG （P 〉 0.05）. CONCLUSION： Based on this study, breathing exercises with deep inhalation and exhalation in pregnant women are effective in reducing the perception of labor pain and shortening the duration of the second stage of delivery. Creation of fermionic particles by a time-dependent electric field and a space-dependent magnetic field is studied with the Bogoulibov transformation method. Exact analytic solutions of the Dirac equation are obtained in terms of the Whittaker functions and the particle creation number density depending on the electric and magnetic fields is determined.

This paper firstly analyzes the Brexit’s impact on the US stock market using a novel interval methodology. The interval-valued dummy variables are proposed to measure the direction and magnitudes of the changes in the inter-day trend and the intra-day volatility of S&P500 returns simultaneously. It is found that both the trend and the volatility of S&P500 returns increased before the Brexit. Besides, the Brexit negatively affected S&P500 returns’ trend in the short term after the event,while its impact on market volatility was positive, which slowly decayed across time. Furthermore, a new interesting finding is that there are both short-term momentum effects(i.e., positive autocorrelation of trends) and volatility clustering in stock markets.

It is of great significance to study the water absorption and expansion of cells,which are essential for the growth and life regulation of plants,not only for understanding the complex life phenomena of plants,but also for the manufacture of biomimetic *** main purpose of this study is to shed light on the mechanism of a novel coiling phenomenon of the split dandelion scape soaked in water and the high concentration mannitol *** discovered that the difference between water absorption/dehydration capacities of inner cells and lateral cells of the split dandelion scape generates asymmetric expansion/contraction between inner and lateral layers,resulting two opposite coiled *** to the deformable hypothesis of the thermal expansion model,the water absorption-induced cell expansion model was proposed to explain the coiling process of the split dandelion *** the simulation and experimental results revealed that the coiling of dandelion scape is strongly depended on the response of cells to the stimulation of the solution *** considerable potential load bearing capacity of plants,the coiling phenomenon can be an inspiration to the designs of soft robots and bionic sensors for humidity control.
