In vivo application of poly-3-hydroxyoctanoate as peripheral nerve graft

Objective:This study aims to investigate the degree of biocompatibility and neuroregeneration of a polymer tube,poly-3-hydroxyoctanoate(PHO)in nerve gap ***:Forty Wistar Albino male rats were randomized into two groups:autologous nerve gap repair group and PHO tube repair *** each group,a 10-mm right sciatic nerve defect was created and reconstructed *** was studied by sciatic function index(SFI),electromyography,and immunohistochemical studies on Days 7,21,45 and 60 of *** was analyzed by the capsule formation around the *** was analyzed by the molecular weight loss in ***:Electrophysiological and histomorphometric assessments demonstrated neuroregeneration in both groups over *** the experimental group,a straight alignment of the Schwann cells parallel to the axons was ***,autologous nerve graft seems to have a superior neuroregeneration compared to PHO *** biodegradation was observed in PHO conduit at the end of 60 ***:Although neuroregeneration is detected in PHO grafts with minor degradation in 60 d,autologous nerve graft is found to be superior in axonal regeneration compared to PHO nerve tube *** conduits were found to create minor inflammatory reaction in vivo,resulting in good soft tissue response.

The nature of transition from adakitic to non-adakitic magmatism in a slab window setting:A synthesis from the eastern Pontides,NE Turkey

The eastern Pontides orogenic belt provides a window into continental arc magmatism in the Alpine-Himalayan belt. The late Mesozoic-Cenozoic geodynamic evolution of this belt remains controversial. Here we focus on the nature of the transition from the adakitic to non-adakitic magmatism in the Kale area of Gumushane region in NE Turkey where this transition is best preserved. The adakitic lithologies comprise porphyries and hyaloclastites. The porphyries are represented by biotite-rich andesites, hornblende-rich andesite and dacite. The hayaloclastites represent the final stage of adakitic activity and they were generated by eruption/intrusion of adakitic andesitic magma into soft carbonate mud. The non-adakitic lithologies include basaltic-andesitic volcanic and associated pyroclastic rocks. Both rock groups are cutting by basaltic dikes representing the final stage of the Cenozoic magmatism in the study area. We report zircon U-Pb ages of 48.71 ± 0.74 Ma for the adakitic rocks, and 44.68 ± 0.84 Ma for the non-adakitic type, suggesting that there is no significant time gap during the transition from adakitic to non-adakitic magmatism. We evaluate the origin, magma processes and tectonic setting of the magmatism in the southern part of the eastern Pontides orogenic belt. Our results have important bearing on the late Mesozoic-Cenozoic geodynamic evolution of the eastern Mediter- ranean region.

Rehabilitation of spinal cord injuries

Spinal cord injury(SCI) is the injury of the spinal cord from the foramen magnum to the cauda equina whichoccurs as a result of compulsion, incision or contusion. The most common causes of SCI in the world are traffic accidents, gunshot injuries, knife injuries, falls and sports injuries. There is a strong relationship between functional status and whether the injury is complete or not complete, as well as the level of the injury. The results of SCI bring not only damage to independence and physical function, but also include many complications from the injury. Neurogenic bladder and bowel, urinary tract infections, pressure ulcers, orthostatic hypotension, fractures, deep vein thrombosis, spasticity, autonomic dysreflexia, pulmonary and cardiovascular problems, and depressive disorders are frequent complications after SCI. SCI leads to serious disability in the patient resulting in the loss of work, which brings psychosocial and economic problems. The treatment and rehabilitation period is long, expensive and exhausting in SCI. Whether complete or incomplete, SCI rehabilitation is a long process that requires patience and motivation of the patient and relatives. Early rehabilitation is important to prevent joint contractures and the loss of muscle strength, conservation of bone density, and to ensure normal functioning of the respiratory and digestive system. An interdisciplinary approach is essential in rehabilitation in SCI, as in the other types of rehabilitation. The team is led by a physiatrist and consists of the patients' family, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, dietician, psychologist, speech therapist, social worker and other consultant specialists as necessary.

Mathematical Model for Takeoff Simulation of a Wing in Proximity to the Ground

Aircraft flying close to the ground benefit from enhanced efficiency owing to decreased induced drag and increased lift. In this study, a mathematical model is developed to simulate the takeoff of a wing near the ground using an Iterative Boundary Element Method （IBEM） and the finite difference scheme. Two stand-alone sub-codes and a mother code, which enables communication between the sub-codes, are developed to solve for the self-excitation of the Wing-In-Ground （WIG） effect. The aerodynamic force exerted on the wing is calculated by the first sub-code using the IBEM, and the vertical displacement of the wing is calculated by the second sub-code using the finite difference scheme. The mother code commands the two sub-codes and can solve for the aerodynamics of the wing and operating height within seconds. The developed code system is used to solve for the force, velocity, and displacement of an NACA6409 wing at a 4° Angle of Attack （AoA） which has various numerical and experimental studies in the literature. The effects of thickness and AoA are then investigated and conclusions were drawn with respect to generated results. The proposed model provides a practical method for understanding the flight dynamics and it is specifically beneficial at the pre-design stages of a WIG effect craft.

RNA silencing is an evolutionarily conserved mechanism in eukaryotic organisms induced by double-stranded RNA(dsRNA)and plays an essential role in regulating gene expression and maintaining genome *** silencing occurs at both posttranscriptional levels through sequence-speciﬁc RNA degradation or translational repression and at transcriptional levels through RNA-directed DNA methylation and/or hetero-chromatin *** silencing pathways have been relatively well characterized in plants and animals,and are now also being widely investigated in diverse fungi,some of which are important plant *** review focuses primarily on the current understanding of the dsRNA-mediated posttranscriptional gene silencing pro-cesses in fungi,but also discusses brieﬂy the known gene silencing pathways that appear to be independent of the RNA silencing *** review RNA silencing studies for a variety of fungi and highlight some of the mechanistic differences observed in different fungal *** RNA silencing is being exploited as a technology in gene function studies in fungi as well as in engineering anti-fungal resistance in plants and animals,we also discuss the recent progress towards understanding dsRNA uptake in fungi.

A rare case: Spontaneous cutaneous fistula of infected splenic hydatid cyst

Hydatid disease is caused by the larval stage of the genus Echinococcus. Live hydatid cysts can rupture into physiologic channels, free body cavities or adjacent organs. Although hydatid disease can develop anywhere in the human body, the liver is the most frequently involved organ, followed by the lungs. Cysts of the spleen are unusual. There are only five case reports of spontaneous cutaneous fistulization of liver hydatid cysts in the literature. But there isn＇t any report about cutaneous fistula caused by splenic hydatid cyst. We report a first case of spontaneous cutaneous fistula of infected splenic hydatid cyst. A 43-year-old man was admitted to our Emergency Service with abdominal pain and fluid drainage from the abdominal wall. He has been suffering from a reddish swelling on the abdominal wall skin for four months. After a white membrane had been protruded out from his abdominal wall, he was admitted to our Emergency Service. On physical examination, a white membrane was seen to protrude out from the 2 crux I cm skin defect on the left superolateral site of the umblicus. Large, complex, cystic and solid mass of 9.5 cm-diameter was located in the spleen on ultrasonographic examination. At operation, partial cystectomy and drainage was performed. After the operation, he was given a dosage of 10 mg/kg per day of albendazole, divided into three doses. He was discharged on the postoperative 10^th d. It should be kept in mind that splenic hydatid cysts can cause such a rare complication.

Heating rate effects for the melting transition of Pt–Ag–Au nanoalloys

The classical molecular dynamics simulations in canonical NVT ensemble conditions are used to investigate the melting transition in different heating rates of Pt–Ag–Au ternary nanoalloys. In order to obtain the initial configurations used in the molecular dynamics simulations, optimizing the chemical ordering of Pt13AgnAu42-n(n = 0–42) ternary nanoalloys was performed using the Basin–Hopping algorithm which would not allow changes in the icosahedron structure. The Gupta many-body potential was used to model interatomic interactions in both molecular dynamics simulations and optimization simulations. The melting transitions of selected Pt–Ag–Au nanoalloys were explored using caloric curves and Lindemann parameters. There have been two identified types of melting mechanisms, one includes sudden jump behavior in the caloric curve and the other is an isomerization while melting transition. The temperature range in which the isomerization takes place depends on the heating rate value.

Helicobacter pylori eradication lowers serum homocysteine level in patients without gastric atrophy

AIM: To determine whether Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) infection caused hyperhomocysteinemia by altering serum vitamin B_(12), serum folate and erythrocyte folate levels and whether eradication of this organism decreased serum homocysteine level. METHODS: The study involved 73 dyspeptic H pylork positive patients, none of them had gastric mucosal atrophy based on rapid urease test and histology. Out of 73 patients, 41 (56.2%) showed a successful eradication of H pylori 4 wk after the end of treatment. In these 41 patients, fasting serum vitamin B_(12) folate and homocysteine levels, and erythrocyte folate levels before and 4 wk after H pylori eradication therapy were compared. RESULTS: The group with a successful eradication of H pylori had significantly higher serum vitamin B_(12) and erythrocyte folate levels in the post-treatment period compared to those in pre-treatment period (210±97 pg/mL vs 237±94 pg/mL,P＜0.001 and 442±212 ng/mL vs 539±304 ng/mL, P=0.024, respectively), but showed no significant change in serum folate levels (5.6±2.6 ng/mL vs 6.0+2.4 ng/mL, P=0.341). Also, the serum homocysteine levels in this group were significantly lower after therapy (13.1±5.2 μmol/L vs 11.9±6.2 μmol/L, P=0.002). Regression analysis showed that serum homocysteine level was positively correlated with age (P=0.01) and negatively with serum folate level before therapy (P=0.003). CONCLUSION: Eradication of H pylori decreases serum homocysteine even in patients who do not exhibit gastric mucosal atrophy. It appears that the level of homocysteine in serum is related to a complex interaction among serum vitamin B_(12), serum folate and erythrocyte folate levels.

Surface Water Potential Assessment and Water Demand Evaluation (A Case of Dabus Watershed, Blue Nile Basin)

Dabus sub-basin is one of the main tributaries of Blue Nile with a considerable surface water potential which can be used for hydro power, irrigation, and water supply. Lack of studies regarding surface water potential and demands at the sub-basin level is the reason why this potential was underutilized. The objective of this study is to assess the surface water potential and evaluate the current and future demand by using Water Evaluation and Planning (WEAP) model at Dabus sub-basin. The model was constructed on four different scenarios starting from the current account (2020) wherein all the data is filled into the model to estimate the surface water potential and demands for different sectors. The scenarios include Scenario 1: reference scenario;Scenario 2: Change in population growth rate;Scenario 3: Irrigation water demand projection;and Scenario 4: Increased domestic water demand. The scenario has helped in analyzing “what if” questions. For all the scenarios the overall demand, coverage and unmet demand were analyzed based on three-time horizon as (2020-2030, 2030-2040, and 2040-2050). The model estimated the average annual flow as 6.536 Billion Cubic Meter (BCM) which is generated from annual precipitation of 14.987 BCM. The model showed 100% demand coverage for all the scenarios except the irrigation demand projection scenario which have unmet demand on some of the months of the year.

Effect of 1%brinzolamide and 0.5%timolol fixed combination on intraocular pressure after cataract surgery with phacoemulsification

AIM:To evaluate the effect of brinzolamide-timolol fixed combination on intraocular pressure(IOP)after cataract ***:The study included 92 eyes of 87 patients who underwent cataract surgery and intraocular lens *** scheduled for phacoemulsification were assigned to 1 of 2 *** treatment group received 1 drop of brinzolamide-timolol fixed combination immediately after surgery,and the control group received no *** IOP was measured preoperatively and at 2h and 24h ***:The mean IOP change was lower in the treatment group than in the control group at 2h *** difference between the mean IOP values of the two groups at 2h postoperatively was found to be statistically ***-four hours after the surgery,the mean IOP change was still higher in the control group when compared to the treatment ***:The fixed combination brinzolamidetimolol can effectively reduce IOP after cataract surgery.
