Extreme Mei-yu rainfall(MYR)can cause catastrophic impacts to the economic development and societal welfare in *** significant improvements have been made in climate models,they often struggle to simulate local-to-regional extreme rainfall(e.g.,MYR).Yet,large-scale climate modes(LsCMs)are relatively well represented in climate *** there exists a close relationship between MYR and various LsCMs,it might be possible to develop causality-guided statistical models for MYR prediction based on *** statistical models could then be applied to climate model simulations to improve the representation of MYR in climate *** this pilot study,it is demonstrated that skillful causality-guided statistical models for MYR can be constructed based on known *** relevancy of the selected predictors for statistical models are found to be consistent with the *** importance of temporal resolution in constructing statistical models for MYR is also shown and is in good agreement with the *** results demonstrate the reliability of the causality-guided approach in studying complex circulation systems such as the East Asian summer monsoon(EAsM).some limitations and possible improvements of the current approach are *** application of the causality-guided approach opens up a new possibility to uncover the complex interactions in the EAsM in future studies.

A mathematical model for the catalytic autothermal reforming(ATR)reaction of synthetic crude glycerol to hydrogen in a fixed bed tubular reactor(FBTR)and over an in-house developed metal oxide catalyst is presented in this *** heterogeneous model equations account for a two-phase system of solid catalyst and bulk feed ***,the ATR of crude glycerol reaction scheme and intrinsic kinetic rate model over an active,selective,and stable nickel-based catalyst were integrated in the developed ***,the model was validated us.ng experimental data generated in our labs for the ATR of synthetic crude *** modelling results adequately described the detailed gas product composition and distribution,temperature profiles,and conversion propagation in the axial direction of the fixed bed reactor over a wide range of reaction temperature(773–923 K)and mass-time(12.71–158.23 g cat·min·(mol C)^(-1)).The crude glycerol conversion predicted with the model showing a close resemblance to those obtained experimentally with an average absolute deviation(AAD)of less than 8%.The maximum crude glycerol conversion and hydrogen yield were found to be 92%and 3 mol hydrogen/mol crude glycerol,***,the gas product concentration profile in the reactor was adequately described(90%)accuracy with a hydrogen concentration of 39%(volume).

Hanging-drop method has been widely used to fabricate three-dimensional (3D) in vitro tissue models due to its advantages such as being easy to perform, inexpensive, and permitting precise control of cell spheroid formation. The geometry of hanging drop may play a critical role on the formation of cell spheroids, which, however, has not been explored. In this study, we developed a modified hanging-drop platform that enables the production of cell spheroids in a high-throughput manner by controlling hanging drop geometry with defined spreading ring. The surface tension force is proportional to the spreading ring and gravitational force is determined by the droplet volume, and the geometry can be determined by the balance between surface tension and gravity.β-TC-6 cell spheroids with optimized diameters were fabricated as 3D in vitro islet models. The models show morphology similar to primary islets and have functionality that more closely resembles primary islets than two-dimensional cell culture. The developed platform holds great potential for engineering well-controlled in vitro tissue models for various applications such as physiological and pathological studies, drug screening, as well as transplantation for treatment purpose.

Microplastics(MPs)have been widely detected in drinking water sources and tap water,rais.ng the concern of the effectiveness of drinking water treatment plants(DWTPs)in protecting the public from exposure to MPs through drinking *** collected and analyzed the available research articles up to August 2021 on MPs in drinking water treatment(DWT),including laboratory-and full-scale *** article summarizes the major MP compositions(materials,sizes,shapes,and concentrations)in drinking water sources,and critically reviews the removal efficiency and impacts of MPs in various drinking water treatment *** discussed drinking water treatment processes include coagulation-flocculation(CF),membrane filtration,sand filtration,and granular activated carbon(GAC)*** DWT processes that are purposed for particle removal are generally effective in reducing MPs in *** influential factors to MP removal are discussed,such as coagulant type and dose,MP material,shape and size,and water *** is anticipated that better MP removal can be achieved by optimizing the treatment ***,the article framed the major challenges and future research directions on MPs and nanoplastics(NPs)in DWT.

AIM: To analyze the combined treatment of resection and intraoperative radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for multifocal hepatocellular carcinoma in terms of prognosis and surgical ***: This study was a retrospective case comparison study us.ng prospectively collected data. The study covered the period from April 2001 to December 2006. The data of 200 patients with histologically confirmed hepatocellular carcinoma were reviewed. Nineteen patients (17 men and 2 women) having received resection in combination with RFA were chosen as subjects of the study (the combination group). Fiftyfour patients (43 men and 11 women) having received resection alone were selected for comparison (the resection group). The two groups matched tumor number and tumor size, and all the patients in the two groups displayed no tumor rupture, major vascular involvement and distant metastasis. Their demographics, preoperative assessment, disease recurrence patterns, overall survival and diseasefree survival were ***: In the combination group, the medianage was 65 years (range, 3477 years), the median tumor number was 3 (range, 29), and the median tumor size was 6 cm (range, 1.214 cm). In the resection group, the median age was 51.5 years (range, 2780 years, P = 0.003), the median tumor number was 3 (range, 29, P = 0.574), and the median tumor size was 6 cm (range, 114 cm, P = 0.782). The two groups were similar in characteristics of tumors and comorbidities, and had comparable results in preoperative liver function tests. All patients had ChildPugh class A status. Bilobar involvement occurred in 14 patients (73.6%) in the combination group and 3 patients (5.5%) in the resection group (P = 0.04). six patients (32%) in the combination group and 35 patients (65%) in the resection group underwent major hepatectomy.
