Background:During human locomotion,a sufficiently stiff foot allows the ankle plantar flexors to generate large propulsive *** foot stiffness(e.g.,via a carbon plate)increases the ankle’s external moment arm in relation to the internal moment arm(i.e.,increasing gear ratio),reduces plantar flexor muscles’shortening velocity,and enhances muscle force *** contrast,when activation of the foot’s intrinsic muscles is impaired,there is a reduction in foot and ankle work and metatarsophalangeal joint *** speculated that the reduced capacity to actively control metatarsophalangeal joint stiffness may impair the gearing function of the foot at the ***:We used a tibial nerve block to examine the direct effects of the intrinsic foot muscles on ankle joint kinetics,in vivo medial gastrocnemius’musculotendinous dynamics,and ankle gear ratio on 14 participants during maximal vertical ***:Under the nerve block,the internal ankle plantar flexion moment decreased(p=0.004)alongside a reduction in external moment arm length(p=0.021)and ankle joint gear ratio(p=0.049)when compared to the non-blocked *** medial gastrocnemius muscle-tendon unit and fascicle velocity were not different between conditions,the Achilles tendon was shorter during propulsion in the nerve block condition(pconclusion:In addition to their known role of regulating the energetic function of the foot,our data indicate that the intrinsic foot muscles also act to optimize ankle joint torque production and leverage during the propulsion phase of vertical jumping.

Patient-reported dissatisfaction following second side in staged bilateral total knee arthroplasty: A systematic review

On the potential of iPhone significant location data to characterize individual mobility for air pollution health studies

In many air pollution health studies,the time-activity pattern of individuals is often ignored largely due to lack of ***,a better understanding of this location-based information is expected to decrease uncertainties in exposure ***,we showcase the potential of iPhone’s significant Location(isL)data in capturing the user’s historical time-activity patterns in order to estimate exposure to ambient air *** this study,one subject carried an iPhone in tandem with a reference GPs tracking device for one *** GPs device recorded locations in 10 second intervals while the isL recorded the time spent in locations the subject visited *** GPs data as a reference,we then evaluated the accuracy of isL data in capturing the subject’s time-activity patterns and time-weighted air pollution concentration within the study time *** found the isL data accurately captured the time the subject spent in 16 microenvironments(*** the subject visited more than once),which was 93%of the time during the study *** average error of time-weighted aerosol optical depth value,a surrogate of particle pollution,is only 0.012%.To explore the availability of isL data among iPhone users,an online survey was *** the 349 surveyed participants,72%of them have isL data *** the popularity of iPhones,isL data may be available for a significant portion of the general *** results suggest isL data have great potential for characterizing historical time-activity patterns to improve air pollution exposure estimation.

Large males have a mating advantage in a species of darter with smaller,allopaternal males Etheostoma olmstedi

Theory suggests that males that are larger than their competitors may have increased mating success, due to both greater competitive ability and increased attractiveness to females. We examined how male mating suceess varies with male size in the tessellated darter Etheostoma olmstedi. Previous work has shown that large males tend to move around and breed in vacant breeding sites, and consequently provide less care for their eggs, while smaller individuals can be allopaternal, caring for the eggs of other males as well as for their own. We studied female egg deposition in a natural breeding population using artificial breeding sites and in the laboratory, where female choice of spawning site was restricted to two breeding sites tended by two males of different sizes. In both the field and the laboratory, nests tended by larger males were more likely to receive new eggs. Additionally, the mean size of males associated with a nest was positively correlated with both the maximum coverage of eggs at the nest and the number of times new eggs were deposited. We discuss how the increased mating success of larger males, despite their decreased parental care, may help explain aUopaternal care in this species [current Zoology 56 （1）： 1-5, 2010].

Taxonomic and metabolic shifts in the coorong bacterial metagenome driven by salinity and external inputs

The coorong estuary lies at the terminus of Australia's largest river system, the Murray-Darling; both are strongly influenced by human activities; including farming and extensive flow modification. Metagenomic approaches were used to determine the planktonic bacterial community composition and potential metabolic function at two extremes in the coorong, the river mouth which exhibits marine-like salinity, and the hypersaline upper-reaches of the estuary. significant shifts in taxa and metabolic function were seen between the two sites. The river mouth exhibited an increase in abundance of R hodobacteriaceae and Alteromonadaceae; families readily able to adapt to change in nutrient conditions; and the potentially pathogenic families B rucellaceae, Enterobacteriaceae and Vibrionaceae. Metabolisms over-represented include motility and chemotaxis, RNA metabolism and membrane transport, all of which are involved in actively searching for and obtaining nutrients. Also over-represented were metabolisms involved in population succession and stress response. An over-representation of taxa and metabolisms indicative of environmental change is reflective of anthropogenically af fected riverine input. In the hypersaline upper reaches of the estuary, the halophilic family Ectothiorhodospiraceae was over-represented, as were the families Flavobacteriaceae, cytophagaceae and Nocardioidaceae, members of which are able to survive over a wide salinity range. Metabolisms over-represented here were reflective of increased bacterial growth, characteristic of hypersaline environments, and included DNA metabolism, nucleotide and nucleoside synthesis and cell cycle. coorong metagenomes clustered taxonomically and metabolically with other planktonic metagenomes, but remained an outlier of this group with only 71% and 84% similarity, respectively. Nitrogen is critical for cell growth, proliferation, and function. Amino acid (AA) catabolism is a major source of intracellular nitrogen for biosynthesis but also generates the nitrogen-containing molecule ammonia (NH3+), which can accumulate to toxic levels in a cell if not exported to the circulation and detoxified by the urea cycle in the liver. In a recent paper in Nature Immunology, Tang et al. [1] discovered a functional urea cycle in memory T cells, which metabolizes ammonia, prevents its toxic accumulation.

We review the postulated threatening processes that may have affected the de- cline in the eastern population of the monarch butterfly, Danausplexippus L. （Lepidoptera： Nymphalidae）, in North America. Although there are likely multiple contributing factors, such as climate and resource-related effects on breeding, migrating, and overwintering populations, the key landscape-level change appears to be associated with the widespread use of genetically modified herbicide resistant crops that have rapidly come to dominate the extensive core summer breeding range. We dismiss misinterpretations of the apparent lack of population change in summer adult count data as logically flawed. Glyphosate-tolerant soybean and maize have enabled the extensive use of this herbicide, generating widespread losses of milkweed （Asclepias spp.）, the only host plants for monarch larvae. Modeling studies that simulate lifetime realized fecundity at a landscape scale, direct counts of milkweeds, and extensive citizen science data across the breeding range suggest that a herbicide-induced, landscape-level reduction in milkweed has precipitated the decline in monarchs. A recovery will likely require a monumental effort for the re-establishment of milkweed resources at a commensurate landscape scale.

Back to school after lockdown: The effect of cOVID-19 restrictions on children’s device-based physical activity metrics
