A Wavelet Neural Network Based Non-linear Model Predictive Controller for a Multi-variable Coupled Tank System

In this paper, a novel real time non-linear model predictive controller(NMPC) for a multi-variable coupled tank system(CTS) is designed. CTSs are highly non-linear and can be found in many industrial process applications. The involvement of multi-input multi-output(MIMO) system makes the design of an effective controller a challenging task. MIMO systems have inherent couplings,interactions in-between the process input-output variables and generally have an complex internal structure. The aim of this paper is to design, simulate, and implement a novel real time constrained NMPC for a multi-variable CTS with the aid of intelligent system techniques. There are two major formidable challenges hindering the success of the implementation of a NMPC strategy in the MIMO case. The first is the difficulty of obtaining a good non-linear model by training a non-convex complex network to avoid being trapped in a local minimum solution. The second is the online real time optimisation(RTO) of the manipulated variable at every sampling time.A novel wavelet neural network(WNN) with high predicting precision and time-frequency localisation characteristic was selected for an MIMO model and a fast stochastic wavelet gradient algorithm was used for initial training of the network. Furthermore, a genetic algorithm was used to obtain the optimised parameters of the WNN as well as the RTO during the NMPC strategy. The proposed strategy performed well in both simulation and real time on an MIMO CTS. The results indicated that WNN provided better trajectory regulation with less mean-squared-error and average control energy compared to an artificial neural network. It is also shown that the WNN is more robust during abnormal operating conditions.

Nigerian antimalarial plants and their anticancer potential:A review

Cancer is a leading cause of death globally, while malaria is the leading cause of death from parasitic diseases in Nigeria. Historically, plant remedies have been used to manage both cancer and ***, the possibility of treating cancer with antimalarial remedies has long been reported, even though the two diseases appear to have little in common. However, a body of research has indicated the potential anticancer activity of both synthetic and nature-derived antimalarials. In Nigeria, over 100 plants are used for the management of malaria, but little is known for their potential role in combatting cancer. Therefore, this review is to highlight the documented anticancer activities of plants used to treat malaria in Nigeria, with the goal of supporting anticancer drug discovery. Scientific databases were used to search for antimalarial plants using selected keywords. Of over 100 plants used to treat malaria in Nigeria, 56 have documented anticancer properties, containing alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, terpenes,terpenoids, quinones, anthraquinones, saponins, steroids, sterols, organosulfur compounds and other polyphenols as the major bioactive components. The major mechanisms of anticancer activity include induction of apoptosis and autophagy, arrest of cell growth, generation of reactive oxygen species and inhibition of angiogenesis. However, mechanistic and clinical investigations of the anticancer properties of most of these plants are still lacking. Notwithstanding, the huge anticancer potential uncovered by the in vitro or in vivo studies and a few clinical studies, Nigerian antimalarial plants may provide a valuable resource, ready to be harnessed for anticancer drug development.

Non-Relativistic Treatment of a Generalized Inverse Quadratic Yukawa Potential

A bound state solution is a quantum state solution of a particle subjected to a potential such that the particle＇s energy is less than the potential at both negative and positive infinity. The particle＇s energy may also be negative as the potential approaches zero at infinity. It is characterized by the discretized eigenvalues and eigenfunctions, which contain all the necessary information regarding the quantum systems under consideration. The bound state problems need to be extended using a more precise method and approximation scheme. This study focuses on the non-relativistic bound state solutions to the generalized inverse quadratic Yukawa potential. The expression for the non-relativistic energy eigenvalues and radial eigenfunctions are derived using proper quantization rule and formula method, respectively. The results reveal that both the ground and first excited energy eigenvalues depend largely on the angular momentum numbers, screening parameters, reduced mass, and the potential depth. The energy eigenvalues, angular momentum numbers, screening parameters, reduced mass, and the potential depth or potential coupling strength determine the nature of bound state of quantum particles. The explored model is also suitable for explaining both the bound and continuum states of quantum systems.

Transport model for shale gas well leakage through the surrounding fractured zones of a longwall mine

The environmental risks associated with casing deformation in unconventional(shale)gas wells positioned in abutment pillars of longwall mines is a concern to many in the mining and gas well *** the recent interest in shale exploration and the proximity to longwall mining in Southwestern Pennsylvania,the risk to mine workers could be catastrophic as fractures in surrounding strata create pathways for transport of leaked ***,this research by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health(NIOSH)presents an analytical model of the gas transport through fractures in a low permeable *** derived equations are used to conduct parametric studies of specific transport conditions to understand the influence of stratum geology,fracture lengths,and the leaked gas properties on subsurface *** results indicated that the prediction that the subsurface gas flux decreases with an increase in fracture length is specifically for a non-gassy *** sub-transport trend could be significantly impacted by the stratum gas generation rate within specific fracture lengths,which emphasized the importance of the stratum *** findings provide new insights for improved understanding of subsurface gas transport to ensure mine safety.

Parquetina nigrescens leaves： chemical profile and influence on the physical and biochemical indices of sexual activity of male Wistar rats

OBJECTIVE： The leaves of Parquetina nigrescens have been claimed in folk medicine to be useful for managing sexual dysfunction, but there is inadequate scientific evidence for this claim. This investigation was conducted to assess the effects of aqueous leaf extract of Parquetina nigrescens （AEPN） in rats induced with sexual dysfunction. METHODS： Male rats were allocated into various groups after being induced into sexual dysfunction with paroxetine hydrochloride. The groups were treated with distilled water, PowMaxM （reference drug）, and the AEPN at 20, 40 and 80 mg/kg body weight （BW） respectively for 7 d. Frequencies of mount （MF）, intromission （IF）, ejaculation （EF）, as well as latencies of mount （ML）, intromission （IL） and post - ejaculatory interval （PEI） were progressively monitored with receptive female rats on days 1, 3 and 7. The precentage of mounted, intromitted, and ejaculated rats, intromission ratio （IR）, copulatory efficiency （CE） and intercopulatory interval （ICI） were also computed. Standard methods were employed to determine the levels of serum luteinizing and follicle stimulating hormones （LH and FSH）, testosterone, nitric oxide （NO） and the activity of phosphodiesterase V （PDE5）. RESULTS： The plant contained alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, cardiac glycosides, steroids, tannins, phlobatannins, cardenolides, phenolics, anthraquinones and triterpenes with alkaloids （2.32 mg/g） occurring in greatest quantity while flavonoids, anthraquinones and cardenolides （0.01 mg/g, each） were the least. All the 20 standard amino acids were detected in the plant leaf, with the lowest concentration being 0.30 mg/g for methionine and the highest being 2.12 mg/g for cysteine. Furthermore, P. nigrescens leaves contained Na, K, Fe, Mg, Zn, Ca, Cu, Mn, P, Pb, Cd, Ni, Cr, and Co, with Fe present in the highest and Co the lowest concentrations. Conservation of indigenous medicinal botanicals in Ekiti State, Nigeria

The rapid appraisal method was used to identity the botanicals used ethnomedicinally from a total of 300 randomly selected respondents drawn from the existing three geo-political zones of Ekiti State, Nigeria. The results obtained revealed that about 40% of the 71 botanicals identified presently rare. Most of the presently abundant botanicals are species primarily cultivated for other purpose other than medicine. Most of the identified species are valued for their curative effects on malaria and fever, the predominant diseases in the study area. The need for the conservation of the rare species cannot be over emphasised as most rural dwellers in the study area depend mostly on herbs from these species. Strategies towards the attainment of this goal are proposed.

Numerical investigation of the effectiveness of radon control measures in cave mines

Ventilation is one of the radon control measures in an underground working ***,the dynamics related to the cave mining methods particularly in block/panel cave mines,complicate the design of effective ventilation system,and *** such as hang ups(in the drawbells),leakage from old workings,and changes in cave porosity lead to differing response of an existing ventilation ***,it is difficult to investigate these conditions at the mine or with a laboratory scale ***,this study develops a discrete model to investigate the impact of different radon control measures in cave mines using computational fluid dynamics *** considered two ventilation conditions for a fully developed cave:with and without the undercut *** each of the two conditions,we studied four parameters:airflow distribution through the production drifts,radon distribution through the production drifts,the effect of increasing airflow on radon concentration,and the effect of a cave top negative pressure on radon *** results show that:the undercut ventilation significantly increases the radon concentration in the production drift;the growth of radon concentration through the production drift is nonlinear(oscillating pattern);maintaining a negative pressure on top of the cave is more effective at mitigating radon exposure,when the undercut ventilation is active;and increase in air volume flow rate decreases radon concentration in most regions,however,there might be regions with significant radon accumulation due to pressure variation across the *** findings provide vital information for designing an effective ventilation system and for proactive implementation of radon control measures in cave mines.

Insecticidal toxicity of two bruchid-resistant cowpea cultivar powders as cowpea seed protectants against Callosobruchus maculatus(Fab.)(Coleoptera:Chrysomelidae)

Toxicity of bruchid-resistant cultivars MIT04K-399-1 and MIT07K-299-92 powders as cowpea protectants against Callosobruchus maculatus(Fab.)was investigated at an ambient temperature of 28±2°C and a relative humidity of 75±5%.Their efficacy was tested at dosage,0.5,1.0,1.5,2.0,2.5,and 3.0 g/20 g of cowpea seeds on adult mortality,oviposition,adult emergence,progeny development,seed damage,weight loss,and Beetle Perforation Index(BPI)by cowpea *** result showed that toxicity of the bruchid-resistant cowpea cultivar powders on adult bruchid is dosage-and *** a dosage of 3.0 g/20 g,cultivars MIT04K-399-1 and MIT07K-299-92 powders achieved 70%and 72.5%lethal effect on adult *** after 4 days of treatment,*** and percentage adult emergence of *** decrease with an increase in powder ***,reduction in progeny development of *** increases with an increase in powder *** mean number of adult emergence decreased at 2 g/20 g,2.5 g/20 g and 3 g/20 *** MIT04K-399-1 and MIT07K-299-92 powders significantly affected egg *** MIT07K-299-92 powder was more effective against oviposition and adult emergence at higher concentrations than MIT04K-399-1 powder,an effect that was not significantly different(P>0.05)from each *** BPI of 9.1 and 6.2 was recorded on cowpea seeds treated with MIT04K-399-1 and MIT07K-299-92 powders at a dosage of 3 g/20 g,*** fear of residual toxicity on nontargeted organisms is not associated with the use of resistant cowpea cultivars as seed *** farmers are familiar with the technology involved in the preparation and application of powders as *** of bruchid-resistant cowpea cultivars MIT04K-399-1 and MIT07K-299-92 powders into the management of coleopteran pests will ensure availability of viable seeds for future farming in developing nations such as Nigeria.

Cytotoxicity and effect of extraction methods on the chemical composition of essential oils of Moringa oleifera seeds

Renewed interest in natural materials as food flavors and preservatives has led to the search for suitable essential oils. Moringa oleifera seed essential oil was extracted by solvent-free microwave and hydrodistillation. This study assessed its chemical constituents. Cytotoxicity of the oils was investigated using hatchability and lethality tests on brine shrimps. A total of 16 and 26 compounds were isolated from the hydrodistillation extraction （HDE） and solvent-free microwave extraction （SME） oils, respectively, which accounted for 97.515% and 97.816% of total identifiable constituents, respectively. At 24 h when the most eggs had hatched, values of the SME （56.7%） and HDIE （60.0%） oils were significantly different （P〈0.05） from those of sea water （63.3%） and chloramphenicol （15.0%）. Larva lethality was different significantly （P〈0.05） between HDE and SME oils at different concentrations and incubation periods. The median lethal concentration （LC50） of the oils was 〉 1000 mg/ml recommended as an index for non-toxicity which gives the oil advantage over some antioxidant, antimicrobial, therapeutic, and preservative chemicals.
