Contrast-enhanced intraoperative ultrasonography equipped with late Kupffer-phase image obtained by sonazoid in patients with colorectal liver metastases

AIM: To find occult metastases during hepatectomy in patients with colorectal cancer liver metastases (CRCLM), contrast-enhanced intraoperative ultrasonography (CE-IOUS) was performed using a new microbubble agent, sonazoid, which provides a parenchyma-specific contrast image based on its accumulation in the Kupffer cells. METHODS: Eight patients with CRCLM underwent CE- IOUS using sonazoid before hepatectomy. The liver was investigated during a late Kupffer-phase imaging, which is a valuable characteristic of sonazoid. RESULTS: CE-IOUS using sonazoid provided the early vascular- and sinusoidal-phase images for 10 min followed by the late Kupffer-phase image up to 30 min after the injection of sonazoid. IOUS did not provide new findings of metastatic lesion in the 8 patients. However, during the late Kupffer-phase image of sonazoid, a metastatic lesion was newly found in two of the 8 patients. These newly detected lesions were removed by an additional hepatectomy and histopathologically diagnosed as a metastasis. CONCLUSION: CE-IOUS using sonazoid can allow surgeons to investigate the whole liver with enough time and to find new metastases intraoperatively.

AIM:To investigate the clinical significance of mucosal expression of suppressors of cytokine signaling 1 (SOCS1) and SOCS3 in human ulcerative colitis (UC). METHODS:Biopsy specimens for histological analysis and mRNA detection were obtained endoscopically from the rectum of 62 patients with UC (36 men; age 13-76 years). The patients were classified endoscopically according to Matts' grade (grade 1 to 4). Expression of SOCS1 and SOCS3 mRNAs was quantified in samples by competitive reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). GAPDH was used as an internal control for efficiency of RT-PCR and amount of RNA. RESULTS:SOCS3 mRNA expression was significantly higher in inflamed mucosa of UC than in inactive mucosa. The level of expression was well correlated with the degree of both endoscopic and histologic inflammation. Interestingly,among the patients in remission,the group with relatively low expression of SOCS3 showed a higher rate of remission maintenance over a 12-mo period. In contrast,SOCS1 mRNA was expressed in both inflamed and non-inflamed colonic mucosa and was not correlated with the activity of colonic mucosa or prognosis. CONCLUSION:These observations suggest that increased expression of mucosal SOCS3,but not of SOCS1,may play a critical role in the development of the colonic inflammation of UC.

AIM： To investigate the role of local colonic mucosal NK receptor-positive T （NKR＋ T） cells in the regulation of intestinal inflammation, we analyzed the population and function of these cells in ulcerative colitis （UC）. METHODS： Colonic mucosal tissues were obtained from colonoscopic biopsies of the descending colon from 96 patients with UC （51 endoscopically uninflamed, 45 inflamed） and 18 normal controls. Endoscopic appearance and histologic score at the biopsied site were determined by MaLts＇ classification. A single cell suspension was prepared from each biopsy by collagenase digestion. Two NKR^＋ T cell subsets, CD56^＋（CD56^＋CD3^＋） T cells and CD161＋（CD161^＋CD3^＋） T cells, were detected by flow cytometric analysis. Intracellular cytokine analysis for anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-10 （IL-10） was performed by in vitro stimulation with phorbol-myristateacetate （PMA） and ionomycin. RESULTS： CD56^＋ T cells and CD161^＋ T cells are present in the normal human colon and account for 6.7% and 21.3% of all mononuclear cells, respectively. The populations of both CD56＋ T cells and CD161^＋ T cells were decreased significantly in the inflamed mucosa of UC. In contrast, the frequency of conventional T cells （CD56 CD3^＋ cells and CD161CD3^＋ cells） was similar among the patient and control groups. The populations of NKR^＋ T cells were correlated inversely with the severity of inflammation, which was classified according to the endoscopic and histologic Marts＇ criteria. Interestingly, approximately 4% of mucosal NKR＋ T cells expressing IL-10 were detected by in vitro stimulation with PMA and ***： Selective reduction in the population of colonic mucosal NKR＋T cells may contribute to the development of intestinal inflammation in UC.

Elemental titanium(Ti)and nickel(Ni)powders were consolidated by spark plasma sintering(SPS)to fabricate Ti-51%Ni(mole fraction)shape-memory alloys(SMAs).The objective of this study is to enhance the superelasticity of SPS produced Ti-Ni alloy using free forging as a secondary *** from two processes(with and without free forging)were compared in terms of microstructure,transformation temperature and *** results showed that,free forging effectively improved the tensile and shape-memory *** increased from 6.8%to 9.2%after *** maximum strain during superelasticity increased from 5%to 7.5%and the strain recovery rate increased from 72%to 92%.The microstructure of produced Ti-51%Ni SMA consists of the cubic austenite(B2)matrix,monoclinic martensite(B19′),secondary phases(Ti3Ni4,Ti2Ni and TiNi3)and oxides(Ti4Ni2O and Ti3O5).There was a shift towards higher temperatures in the martensitic transformation of free forged specimen(aged at 500°C)due to the decrease in Ni content of B2 *** is related to the presence of Ti3Ni4 precipitates,which were observed using transmission electron microscope(TEM).In conclusion,free forging could improve superelasticity and mechanical properties of Ti-51%Ni SMA.

A cylindrical carbon pellet with a size of 1.2L x 1.2φ mm to 1.8L x 1.8φ mm and a velocity of 100 m/s to 300 m/s was injected into large helical device （LHD） for an efficient fueling based on its deeper deposition instead of hydrogen gas puffing and ice pellet injection. Electron density increment of Ane = 10^14 cm^-3 is successfully obtained by single carbon pellet injection without plasma collapse. Typical density and temperature of the ablation plasma of the carbon pellet, e.g., 6.5× 10^16 cm^-3 and 2.5 eV for CII, are examined respectively by spectroscopic method. A confinement improvement up to 50% compared to ISS-95 stellarator scaling is clearly observed in a relatively low-density regime of ne = 2 × 10^13 cm^-3 to 4×10^13 cm^-3, and high ion temperature Ti（0） of about 6 keV is also observed with an internal transport barrier at ne = 1.2 × 10^13 cm^-3. In particular, the improvement in the ion temperature largely exceeds that observed in hydrogen gas-puffed discharges, which typically ranges below 3 keV.

Electrical transport properties of double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs) are modulated by encapsulating the azafullerene C59N which is synthesized via a plasma ion-irradiation method. The encapsulation of C59N molecules inside DWNTs has been confirmed by both transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The pristine DWNTs with outer diameter 4 - 5 nm are found to exhibit an ambipolar semiconducting behavior due to their small band gap. It is found that C60 fullerene encapsulated DWNTs exhibit a unipolar p-type semiconducting behavior. By comparison, C59N encapsulated DWNTs display an n-type semiconducting behavior. Our findings demonstrate that C59N operates as an electron donor compared with the acceptor behavior of C60, which is further clarified by photoelectron emission spectroscopy.
