Background: Multiple lines of evidence suggest possible impairment of the glymphatic system in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). To investigate this, we used in vivo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to assess glymphatic func-tion early in the course of disease in a transgenic mouse with doxycycline (Dox)-controlled expression of cytoplasmic human TDP-43 (hTDP-43ΔNLS), mimicking the key pathology implicated in ALS. Methods: Adult TDP-43 transgenic and littermate monogenic control mice underwent longitudinal multimodal MRI one and three weeks after the cessation of Dox feed, together with weekly rotarod assessments of motor per-formance. Glymphatic function was assessed using dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI to track the clearance of an MR contrast agent injected into the cisterna magna. Results: Compared to their littermate controls, TDP-43 mice exhibited progressive neurodegeneration including that within the primary motor cortex, primary somatosensory cortex and corticospinal tract, significant weight loss includ-ing gastrocnemius atrophy, and shortened telomere length. Furthermore, in the presence of this ALS-like phenotype, these mice have significantly disrupted glymphatic function. Conclusions: Although the relationship between glymphatic clearance and ALS disease progression remains to be elucidated, these changes occurred very early in the disease course. This provides initial evidence to suggest that the glymphatic system might be a potential therapeutic target in the treatment of ALS.

In light of ever-present partisan division in the US political system, it is critical that researchers gain a better under-standing of potential biological differences that exist between self-professed Democrats and Republicans. In the current pilot experiment, we examined differences within the human mirror neuron system (hMNS), a network linked to a host of social and emotional abilities, in a small group of self-identified Republicans and Democrats. We found clear differences between these two groups with respect to resting-state brain connectivity within the hMNS. These neural differences were not systematically related to differences in empathy. Our findings are consistent with the idea that other factors, such as one’s preferential type of social connectivity (broad vs. tight), may have driven the reported findings. These data provide novel insights regarding our knowledge of the biological basis of party identification, and suggest specific directions for future research.

In Indonesia,undervirilisation in 46,XY males is the most common form of difference of sex development(DSD).This can include hypospadias(misplacement of the urethra),micropenis,bifid scrotum,and undescended testis[1].Undervirilisation or 46,XY DSD can be associated with a number of congenital syndromes,including Smith-Lemli-Opitz Syndrome(OMIM 602858),caused by an inborn error of cholesterol synthesis,and characterised by growth delay,intellectual disability,microcephaly,distinctive facial features,cleft palate,limb anomalies,and hypospadias[2]or Opitz syndrome(also known as Opitz G/BBB syndrome).Opitz syndrome can be caused by variants in the X-linked midline 1(MID1)gene(Type I)or in an autosomal dominant manner by monoallelic variants in sperm antigen with calponin homology and coiled-coil domains 1-like(SPeCC1L)on chromosome 22q11.2(Type II)[3].Opitz syndrome is characterised by hypospadias,hypertelorism,cleft lip/palate,and heart defects[4].The prevalence of X-linked Opitz syndrome is estimated to be from 1 in 50000 to 1 in 100000 males[5].Recognition of a syndrome informs appropriate clinical management and patient ***,although these syndromes are rare,hypospadias may be diagnosed before the emergence of other comorbidities meaning that it is crucial for clinicians to perform a thorough clinical evaluation with syndromic causes in mind.

This paper introduces a web-based application that enables engineers or designers to identify risks during the conceptual phase of a product design. This software application was developed based on the Risk in early Design (ReD) method developed by Author, Stone, and Tumer. The ReD method demonstrates that risks can be identified in the early phase of product design by relating recorded historical failure information to product functions. Based on the concept of ReD theory and current industry needs, the goals of a web-based ReD application were defined. These goals are the intended benefits or functionalities that the web-based ReD application would provide. In addition, a multi-level evaluation framework was adopted to determine how well the application meets the needs of various organizations. As part of the evaluation, a questionnaire was developed and administered to a sample industrial and academic user group. The results of the evaluation indicate that the web-based ReD software application meets many of the goals to help an organization in performing product risk analysis.

Recently, redox factor-1 (Ref-1) has received considerable attention as an enzyme for stimulating tumor cell growth. We hypothesized that Ref-1 is upregulated during the early stage of tumorigenesis. Utilizing both tumor promotion sensitive P+ and promotion resistant P? mouse skin epidermal JB6 cells, we found that Ref-1 expression was only induced in tumor promotion sensitive P+ cells following TPA treatment. Consistent with that, Ref-1 knockdown suppressed skin cell transformation. Interestingly, Ref-1 knockdown suppressed nuclear translocation of NF-kappaB subunit p65, and inhibited production of proinflammatory cytokines. These results suggest Ref-1 may promote early tumorigenesis and serve as a target for chemoprevention.

Some scholars argue that stereotypes of women as docile and non-violent result in women receiving leniency from the public compared to men who commit identical crimes. However, others assert that women who commit violent crimes violate traditional gender roles, which can lead the public to evaluate them more harshly than their male counterparts. More than 900 adults read news stories about either a woman abusing a man or a man abusing a woman before evaluating the criminal suspect. Female participants showed in-group favoritism towards criminal suspects that matched their gender. Conversely, male participants did not show a preference for their in-group. Overall, both male and female participants were more likely to believe the crime was justified, have more sympathy for the criminal suspect, assign less jail time, and have a more positive attitude towards the suspect when the criminal suspect was female vis-a-vis male. These findings were more pronounced when there was a non-fatal crime compared to a crime involving a fatality. Chivalry hypothesis and social identity theory are discussed.
