Surface water runoff from urban centers is a major source of environmental pollution which impacts water quality in downstream aquatic habitats. Phenoxyacid herbicides are some of the most widely globally used herbicides in agriculture and urban environments for weed control. Their transformation products which in- clude chlorophenols can be more toxic than the active ingredients. We used lC/MS/MS to analyzed simul- taneously these acid herbicides and their transformation products in stormwater retention ponds taken from an urban environment to examine the occurrence and potential release of these herbicides from urban inputs into downstream waters. 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and mecoprop were detected in all samples col- lected from the ponds and at the highest concentrations, while 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid was de- tected only in spring and summer. Two transformation products, 4-chloro-2-methylphenol and 2,4-di- chlorophenol were detected in samples primarily at inlet locations on the ponds indicating that degradation had occurred in surface soils prior to surface water runoff.

This study investigated the role of mast cells in canine cutaneous vascular tumors, and is the first such study to distinguish between tumors arising in the dermis versus the subcutis. Mast cell numbers in canine cutaneous hemangiomas (HA) and hemangiosarcomas (HSA) were evaluated to identify a relationship between mast cells, tumor type (HA, HSA), histologic location (dermis, subcutis) and tumor recurrence. One hundred and sixty-seven biopsies from 148 dogs were evaluated. Using only one biopsy from each dog, mast cell counts (MCC) for each tumor (n = 148) were obtained by averaging the number of mast cells counted in ten 400× fields. A significant difference in mean MCC was found only between tumor types, with HA having more mast cells than HSA (4.2 ± 4.2 vs. 2.2 ± 2.6;p logic location. Our results indicate that benign HA contain more mast cells than malignant endothelial cell tumors, regardless of histologic location;whether this is a cause or effect relationship remains to be determined.

Objective: To study the frequency of interstitial 7q deletions in B-cell lymphoproliferative disorders (B-lPDs). Methods: Cases were collected from the clinical laboratory diagnosis database at USlabs/labCorp over the past two years (2002 to 2004). Cases that showed deletions in the long arm of chromosome 7 were then reviewed. Interstitial deletions in the long arm of chromosome 7 were further investigated according to the indications for clinical laboratory studies and flow cytometry findings. The final clinical diagnosis for each case was obtained from the referring physician. Results: A total of 19 483 cases were included in this series. Eighty-five cases were observed to have either terminal or interstitial deletion in the long arm of chromosome 7. Of the 85 cases, 46 had interstitial deletions accounting for 54.1% of the 7q deletions combined. B-lPDs were found in 10 of the 46 cases, accounting for 21.7%. The B-lPDs associated with 7q interstitial deletions were diverse, including B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-Cll) in five cases. The deleted region in the long arm of chromosome 7 in the 10 cases associated with B-lPDs was solely confined to the 7q22-q32 region. Conclusion: (1) The frequency of 7q interstitial deletions associated with B-lPDs is substantially high; (2) 7q interstitial deletions are not uncommon in B-Cll.

Comparing dietary determinants of serum vitamin D status among African-Americans and Caucasians

African-Americans (AAs) maintain a high prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency compared to Caucasians. The relationship between dietary sources of vitamin D and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) among AAs remains poorly understood. This research examines the dietary determinants of 25(OH)D levels in AAs and Caucasians, controlling for demographic characteristics. 121 Caucasians and 119 AAs participated in a biomarker based study, comparing the correlation of serum 25(OH) D with dietary sources of vitamin D. Diet was assessed by multiple 24-hour (24-hr) recall and Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). Parallel multiple linear and logistic regression models stratified by race were then used to regress 25(OH)D level and sufficiency (25(OH)D > 20 ng/ml) on major dietary sources of vitamin D—multivitamins (MV), milk, and fish—controlling for age, gender, and BMI. Results show that AAs are sensitive to the method of dietary assessment, with multiple 24 hr recall demonstrating highest correlation (0.4) with 25 (OH)D levels. MV’s association with 25(OH)D levels was highest in both groups, 25% higher in AAs vs. Caucasians (8.6 vs. 6.5 ng/ml per 400 IU). Milk’s impact on serum was similar in both groups but fish was only significant among Caucasians. MV consumption significantly increased odds of vitamin D sufficiency in both groups. Given the high prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency and the strong contribution as compared to milk or fish, MV supplementation is recommended. Additionally, future studies aimed at measuring vitamin D intake should consider the use of multiple 24 hr recall instead of a single measure of FFQ or 24 hr recall since the multiple 24 hr recalls have a stronger correlation to serum 25(OH)D.
