Foveal thickness reduction after anti-vascular endothelial growth factor treatment in chronic diabetic macular edema

AIM：To report foveal thickness reduction in eyes with resolution of macular edema and recovery of a foveal depression after one-year of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor（anti-VEGF） therapy for center-involving diabetic macular edema（DME）.METHODS：Foveal thickness was assessed with optical coherence tomography to determine the central subfield foveal thickness（CSFT） and macular volume in 42 eyes with DME（CSFT〉275 μm）. Evaluations also included measurement of best-corrected visual acuity（BCVA）, and were performed at baseline, and upon foveal depression recovery achieved after 12 monthly intravitreal injections of either 1.5 mg/0.06 mL bevacizumab（n=21） or 0.5 mg/0.05 mL ranibizumab（n=21）. Data was compared to 42 eyes of normally sighted, non-diabetic, healthy individuals with similar age, gender and race ***：Mean baseline BCVA was 0.59±0.04 and 0.32± 0.03 log MAR（P〈0.001） after treatment and resolution of DME, with all, but 3 eyes, showing BCVA improvement. Mean CSFT before treatment was 422.0±20.0 μm, and after treatment, decreased to 241.6±4.6 μm（P〈0.001）, which is significantly thinner than CSFT found in control subjects（272.0±3.4 μm; P〈0.001）. Moreover, in 33/42 DM eyes（79%）, CSTF was thinner than the matched control eye. Macular volume showed comparable results, but with lower differences between groups（control：8.5±0.4 mm^3; DME：8.2±1.0 mm^3; P=0.0267）.CONCLUSION：DME eyes show significantly lower foveal thickness than matched controls after DME resolution achieved with one-year anti-VEGF therapy. Further investigation into the reasonsfor this presumable retinal atrophy using fluorescein angiography and functional parameters as well as establishing possible predictors is warranted. This finding should be considered during the treatment of DME.

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a slowly progressive neurodegenerative disorder with motor and non-motorsigns, which begins long before the diagnosis can be made. Pharmacotherapy with dopaminergic drugsis the mainstay of PD therapy. There is no currently available cure or disease-modifying treatment. Dietand various foods have been proposed as possible risk factors for PD. Nutritional supplementation withomega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, B vitamins, and coenzyme Q may have potential in the management ofPD. In addition, several strategies could possibly lead to the development of medical foods in PD. Forexample, ketogenic diets may have effects complementary to pharmacotherapy. Gut microbial dysbiosisand altered microbial metabolites found in PD may lead to chronic low-grade inflammation in gut andbrain. Interventions targeting gut microbiota, such as the supplementation of probiotics, may providenovel approaches to PD in regard to both symptomatic treatment and disease modification. High qualityrandomized controlled trials need to be conducted in order to evaluate whether these food-basedstrategies have symptomatic efficacy or the potential to delay the progression of PD.

Background： Bacillus spp. seem to be an alternative to antimicrobial growth promoters for improving animals＇ health and performance. However, there is little information on the effect of Bacillus spp. in combination with different dietary crude protein（CP） levels on the ileal digestibility and microbiota composition. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the effect of Bacillus spp. supplementation to low-（LP） and high-protein diets（HP） on ileal CP and amino acid（AA） digestibility and intestinal microbiota ***： Eight ileally cannulated pigs with an initial body weight of 28.5 kg were randomly allocated to a rowcolumn design with 8 pigs and 3 periods of 16 d each. The assay diets were based on wheat-barley-soybean meal with two protein levels： LP（14% CP, as-fed） and HP diet（18% CP, as-fed）. The LP and HP diets were supplemented with or without Bacil us spp. at a level of 0.04%（as-fed）. The apparent ileal digestibility（AID） and standardized ileal digestibility（SID） of CP and AA was determined. Bacterial community composition from ileal digesta was analyzed by Illumina amplicon sequencing and quantitative real-time PCR. Data were analyzed as a 2 × 2 factorial design using the GLIMMIX procedures of ***： The supplementation with Bacillus spp. did not affect both AID and SID of CP and AA in growing ***, there was no difference in AID of CP and AA between HP and LP diets, but SID of cystine, glutamic acid,glycine, and proline was lower（P 〈 0.05） in pigs fed the HP diets. Food intolerance and oligoantigenic diet in children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder

The hypothesis that some children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may show sensitivity or allergic reactions to various food items has led to the development of the oligoantigenic diet. The rationale of the diet is to eliminate certain foods from the diet in order to exclude potential allergens contained either naturally in food or in artificial ingredients with allergenic properties. The oligoantigenic diet attempts to identify individual foods to which a person might be sensitive. First， ADHD symptoms are monitored while multiple foods are excluded from the diet. Subsequently， if symptoms remit， foods are re-introduced， while observing the individual for the return of symptoms. An advantage of the oligoantigenic diet is that it can be tailored to the individual. A growing body of evidence suggests that behavioral symptoms of subgroups of children with ADHD may benefit from the elimination of certain foods. The effect sizes of an oligoantigenic diet regarding improvement of ADHD symptoms have been found to be medium to large. Available evidence suggests that the investigation of the role of food hypersensitivities in ADHD is a promising avenue worthy of further exploration. Further large-scale， randomized controlled studies including assessment of long-term outcome are therefore warranted.

Field Application of Non-Pathogenic <i>Verticillium dahliae</i>Genotypes for Regulation of Wilt in Strawberry Plants

Verticillium dahliae induced wilt disease in strawberry can cause severe yield losses and thus lead to inevitable negative economic impacts. Inoculation of plants with non-pathogenic strains of Verticillium was conducted as a biologic control agent (BCA) according to the concept that preoccupation of the ecologic niche rendered strawberry plants immune to infection with soil-borne pathogenic Verticillium. This concept was tested for economic viability in a field trial under commercial conditions. Results were reported for 2 years of field trials under practice conditions in two locations in Brandenburg, Germany. Inoculation was shown to have a positive effect of 20% of plants, while 30% of plants remain unaffected and of equally high vitality. However, 50%-0% of plants were impacted negatively, showing severe wilt symptoms up to total loss. The characteristic progression of wilt symptoms suggested an infestation caused by Phytophtora sp. and other pathogens. Further results showed that the main factor of the side effects was caused by different qualities of plant material in interaction to the inoculation with the BCA and only to a minor extent depended on pre-infestation of soils. We conclude that specific conditions, such as certified plant material or soil analysis for other pathogens besides Verticillium, avoided these side-effects relevant for commercial farming.
