BACKGROUND The key question in living kidney donor assessment is how best to determine the contribution of each kidney to overall renal function and guide selection of which kidney to donate,ensuring safety of procedure and good outcome for both recipient and *** is thought that a length difference>2 cm may indicate significant difference in function and therefore need for measurement of differential *** To determine the effect of using kidney length to decide which kidney to donate in a retrospective cohort of potential *** All 333 potential living kidney donors between january 2009 and August 2018 who completed assessment were retrospectively *** assessment was performed as per United Kingdom *** included age,sex,kidney length(cranio-caudal)obtained by computed tomography/ultrasonography,51-chromium ethylenediamine tetraacetatic acid measured glomerular filtration rate,mercapto acetyl tri glycine split function and vascular *** were 48 exclusions due to inadequate data or incomplete *** analysis was performed using Excel pivot tables and GraphPad *** between kidney length and differential function was determined with Pearson’s correlation *** Of 285 potential donors included in the study,there were 144 males(mean age 49.9±14.75)and 141 females(mean age 51.2±11.23).Overall,the Pearson’s correlation between differences in length and divided function of kidney pairs was 0.1630,P=*** 73 with significant difference(>10%)in divided function,18(24.7%)had no difference in kidney length;54(74%)had a difference of2 *** a length difference of>1 cm would only predict significant difference in divided function in 8/34(23.5%)of *** a difference of>2 cm as cut off for performing split function would lead to false reassurance in 72 patients(6 had>20%difference in divided function whereas 66 had 10%-20%difference).CONCLUSION Lengt

Background:There exist few maximal oxygen uptake(VO_(2max))non-exercise-based prediction equations,fewer using machine learning(ML),and none specifically for older *** direct measurement of VO_(2max)is infeasible in large epidemiologic cohort studies,we sought to develop,validate,compare,and assess the transportability of several ML VO_(2max)prediction ***:The Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging(BLSA)participants with valid VO2_(max)tests were included(n=1080).Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator,linear-and tree-boosted extreme gradient boosting,random forest,and support vector machine(SVM)algorithms were trained to predict VO_(2max)*** developed these algorithms for:(a)the overall BLSA,(b)by sex,(c)using all BLSA variables,and(d)variables common in aging ***,we quantified the associations between measured and predicted VO_(2max)and ***:The age was 69.0±10.4 years(mean±SD)and the measured VO_(2max)was 21.6±5.9 mL/kg/*** absolute shrinkage and selection operator,linear-and tree-boosted extreme gradient boosting,random forest,and support vector machine yielded root mean squared errors of 3.4 mL/kg/min,3.6 mL/kg/min,3.4 mL/kg/min,3.6 mL/kg/min,and 3.5 mL/kg/min,*** quartiles of measured VO_(2max)showed an inverse gradient in mortality *** VO_(2max)variables yielded similar effect estimates but were not robust to ***:Measured VO_(2max)is a strong predictor of *** ML can improve the accuracy of prediction as compared to simpler approaches but estimates of association with mortality remain sensitive to *** studies should seek to reproduce these results so that VO_(2max),an important vital sign,can be more broadly studied as a modifiable target for promoting functional resiliency and healthy aging.

Nephronophthisis-related ciliopathies(NPHP-RC)represent one of the most common causes of chronic kidney disease in the first three decades of life and are characterized by a broad genetic and clinical heterogeneity.1 To date,more than 90 genes have been identified that cause autosomalrecessive NPHP-RC if mutated,accounting for up to 60%of cases.1 Among these,homozygous deletions of NPHP1 are the most common *** genes localize to primary cilia,basal bodies,or the centrosome and lead to a primary ciliary disruption if mutated,thereby causing a broad phenotypical spectrum.1 Patients that suffer from NPHP-RC can either have an isolated renal phenotype,such as polyuria,polydipsia,decreased urinary concentration ability,and secondary enuresis due to loss of tubular function,or present with extrarenal symptoms including retinal degeneration,cerebellar vermis hypoplasia,or hepatic *** are often diagnosed in early adolescence,reaching end-stage renal disease before 25 years of age,but early onset and rapidly progressive forms of NPHP-RC also exist.1 Renal ultrasound indicates kidneys of normal or reduced renal length with increased echogenicity and corticomedullary cysts.

Can intracellular Staphylococcus aureus in osteomyelitis be treated using current antibiotics?A systematic review and narrative synthesis

Approximately 40%of treatments of chronic and recurrent osteomyelitis fail in part due to bacterial *** aureus,the predominant pathogen in human osteomyelitis,is known to persist by phenotypic adaptation as small-colony variants(SCVs)and by formation of intracellular reservoirs,including those in major bone cell types,reducing susceptibility to *** infections with *** are difficult to treat;however,there are no evidence-based clinical guidelines addressing these infections in *** conducted a systematic review of the literature to determine the demonstrated efficacy of all antibiotics against intracellular *** relevant to osteomyelitis,including protein biosynthesis inhibitors(lincosamides,streptogramins,macrolides,oxazolidines,tetracyclines,fusidic acid,and aminoglycosides),enzyme inhibitors(fluoroquinolones and ansamycines),and cell wall inhibitors(beta-lactam inhibitors,glycopeptides,fosfomycin,and lipopeptides).The PubMed and Embase databases were screened for articles related to intracellular *** infections that compared the effectiveness of multiple antibiotics or a single antibiotic together with another treatment,which resulted in 34 full-text articles fitting the inclusion *** combined findings of these studies were largely inconclusive,most likely due to the plethora of methodologies ***,the reported findings in the context of the models employed and possible solutions for improved understanding are explored *** rifampicin,oritavancin,linezolid,moxifloxacin and oxacillin were identified as the most effective potential intracellular treatments,the scientific evidence for these is still relatively *** advocate for more standardized research on determining the intracellular effectiveness of antibiotics in *** osteomyelitis to improve treatments and patient outcomes.

X-ray absorption spectroscopy(XAS)is a well-established method for in-depth characterization of electronic *** practice hundreds of energy-points should be sampled during the measurements,and most of them are ***,it is also tedious to estimate reasonable parameters in the atomic Hamiltonians for mechanistic *** implement an Adversarial Bayesian optimization(ABO)algorithm comprising two coupled BOs to automatically fit the many-body model Hamiltonians and to sample effectively based on active learning(AL).Taking NiO as an example,we find that less than 30 sampling points are sufficient to recover the complete XAS with the corresponding crystal field and charge transfer models,which can be selected based on intuitive hypothesis *** applications on the experimental XAS spectra reveal that less than 80 sampling points give reasonable XAS and reliable atomic model *** ABO algorithm has a great potential for future applications on automated physics-driven XAS analysis and AL sampling.

Divergent foraging behavior in a hybrid zone： Darwin＇s tree finches （Camarhynchus spp.） on Floreana Island

Hybrid speciation is increasingly recognized as a mechanism for novel evolutionary trajectories. However, we know very little about the ecology of a contact zone that has arisen in sympatry. This study examines the foraging behavior and fitness of two species of Darwin's tree finches (Camarhynchus parvulus, C. pauper) and hybrid offspring on Floreana Island. Previous study showed that the percentage of hybrids in the tree finch population increased from 19% in 2005 to 41% in 2010, and their body and beak size increased by~5% (parental phenotype did not change). In 2005-2006, all three tree finch groups (two parental species and hybrid birds) used the same foraging substrate, technique, and height. By 2010-2013, the small tree finch C. parvulus had changed its foraging technique and the medium tree finch C. pauper had changed its foraging height. Both parental species had higher body condition when foraging at (divergent) mean foraging heights per species but hybrid birds did not. We discuss the implications of conserving forest to facilitate vertical niche expansion and the role of hybridization for genetic persistence.
