Colloidal semiconductor quantum dots(QDs)constitute a perfect material for ink-jet printable large area displays,photovoltaics,light-emitting diode,bio-imaging luminescent markers and many other *** this purpose,efficient light emission/absorption and spectral tunability are necessary *** are currently fulfilled by the direct bandgap ***-QDs could offer the solution to major hurdles posed by these materials,namely,toxicity(e.g.,Cd-,Pb-or As-based QDs),scarcity(e.g.,QD with In,Se,Te)and/or *** we show that by combining quantum confinement with dedicated surface engineering,the biggest drawback of Si—the indirect bandgap nature—can be overcome,and a‘direct bandgap’variety of Si-QDs is *** demonstrate this transformation on chemically synthesized Si-QDs using state-of-the-art optical spectroscopy and theoretical *** carbon surface termination gives rise to drastic modification in electron and hole wavefunctions and radiative transitions between the lowest excited states of electron and hole attain‘direct bandgap-like’(phonon-less)*** results in efficient fast emission,tunable within the visible spectral range by QD *** findings are fully justified within a tight-binding theoretical *** the C surface termination is replaced by oxygen,the emission is converted into the well-known red luminescence,with microsecond decay and limited spectral *** that way,the‘direct bandgap’Si-QDs convert into the‘traditional’indirect bandgap form,thoroughly investigated in the past.

Structural, ferromagnetic, and optical properties of Fe and Al co-doped ZnO diluted magnetic semiconductor nanoparticles synthesized under high magnetic field

In this study, 2% Fe and 3% Al co-doped ZnO nanoparticles were synthesized using a hydrothermal method under high magnetic field (HMF). The influences of HMF on the structural, optical, and ferromagnetic properties of Fe and Al co-doped ZnO nanoparticles were characterized and analyzed. The single-phase wurtzite structure of the synthesized samples was confirmed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and Raman spectroscopy analysis. The application of HMF decreases the particle size of the spherical nanocrystal as observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Optical analysis indicated that the absoqjtion edge shifted towards a higher wavelength (red shift). The nanoparticles synthesized under the HMF exhibited high room temperature ferromagnetism (RTFM) performance because of the high oxygen vacancy (VO) content as revealed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), which was in agreement with the prediction of the bound magnetic polarons theory.

Motor Profile of Late Preterm Infants: A Systematic Review of the Last Decade

Motor development at late preterm infants has significant importance as it composes the picture of the severe evidences of motor impairments or other developmental difficulties. Early detection is crucial as early intervention is the unique immediate solution option to catch up the developmental milestones. Method: Α systematic search for scientific articles of the decade 2010-2020 investigating the motor profile of late preterm infants was conducted. Results: The search identified 9 studies, many of which highlighted the risk of motor and developmental delays even at 36 months of age. Conclusions: The stability of motor and developmental delays indicates the need of further investigation at a later age and intervention to avoid possible academic difficulties.

Characteristics of the Sertoli Cells of Salmonidae from Ohrid Lake during Spermatogenesis-Ultrastructural Analysis

Ultrastructual characteristics of Sertoli cells of Salmonidae from Ohrid Lake during the spermatogenetic cycle have been analysed. Sertoli cells being an integral part of the seminiferous lobules underwent considerable changes, which influenced their cytomorphological features. The degenerative changes of Sertoli cells were manifested by an extreme vacuolisation, mitochondria in degeneration with widened crysts and thickened matrix, desorganised ER, autophagosomes, ＂myeline-like＂ structures and lysed cytoplasmic regions. The above mentioned changes were followed by karyopycnisis, comlete degeneration and delamination of cells from the wall of the seminiferous lobules, lysis and detritus formations （Sertoli necrotic material） in the lumen of the lobules. The aim of this paper is special research of the ultrastructural characteristics, i.e. the changes on a level with testes which happen in the postspawning period in the two species of Teleostei of Ohrid Lake, Ohrid trout （Salmo letnica Kar.） and Ohrid belvica （Acantholingua ochridana Steind.）. The postspawning period is emphasized in Teleostei in this relatively short period, when one reproductive cycle finishes and the following has to start, on a level of testicular parenhyma very important histological changes are going on which give special histological identification, i. e. in the postspawning period there is a complete reorganization of the testes.

Assessment of cerebrospinal fluid α-synuclein as a potential biomarker in Parkinson's disease and synucleinopathies

The discovery of diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers for neurodegenerative diseases represents an unmet clinical challenge. For example, the diagnosis of Parkinson's disease (PD) relies mainly on the presence of clinical symptoms. Therefore, the identification and use of novel PD biomarkers would allow the application of disease-modifying treatments at the very early stages of neurodegeneration. The presynaptic protein, α-synuclein, has been genetically and biochemically linked with PD pathogenesis and has been considered as a potential biomarker for the diagnosis of PD and the related synucleinopathies. The vast majority of studies have assessed the measurement of α-synuclein, alone or in combination with other biomarkers in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), since it is the biofluid that most closely reflects the pathophysiology of the brain. The diagnostic value of the monomericα-synuclein but also the oligomeric, the phosphorylated and the aggregated forms of the protein has been evaluated using a variety of immunoassays. The results have so far been reproducible but the assays used are still lacking the required diagnostic accuracy. Recent reports have shown that Protein misfolding cyclic amplification is a technique that has the potential to detect α-synuclein seeds in samples of CSF with high sensitivity and across different synucleinopathies. In an effort to increase the source of biomarker for PD and related synucleinopathies,α-synuclein has also been measured in neuronal exosomes, small vesicles of endosomal origin that are secreted from neurons into the CSF or the periphery. The potential diagnostic value of exosomes stems from the notion that exosomes carry a disease-specific repertoire of marker proteins. Therefore, the assessment of exosome-associated α-synuclein species may also open up new avenues for disease diagnosis in different synucleinopathies.

Late recurrence in surgically managed pediatric atypical mycobacterial lymphadenitis:A case report and review of the literature

Objective:The purpose of this study is to identify existing literature on recurrent atypical mycobacterial cervicofacial lymphadenitis to augment our understanding of a unique patient who presented to our tertiary‐care center 5‐years posttreatment with recurrence following *** Sources:OVID Medline,Scopus,and Web of ***:A literature search was conducted yielding 49 original articles which were screened twice by two independent reviewers resulting in 14 studies meeting inclusion criteria for data extraction using Covidence *** independent reviewers extracted data on recurrence of atypical mycobacterial cervicofacial lymphadenitis and consensus was reached on data points from all included ***:This study illuminated the paucity of recurrence reporting in the literature regarding atypical mycobacterial *** studies identified in our review included discussions on recurrence with few elaborating beyond the rate of recurrence to describe their *** out of sixteen studies provided recurrence rates for their cohort,11 out of 14 specified the initial treatment modality,and only five out of eight studies that described initial treatment with surgery differentiated recurrence rates between complete and incomplete *** mean length of follow‐up in the included studies was 20 *** was one previously reported case of late recurrence at 5‐***:We identified few reports that discussed the management of recurrence of atypical mycobacterial cervicofacial *** was minimal data on recurrence rates between surgical treatment *** case discussed in our study showcases that treatment with curettage has the potential to present with late recurrence.

The search for roAp stars: null results and new candidates from Strmgren-Crawford photometry

The rapidly oscillating Ap(roAp) stars exhibit pulsational photometric and/or radial velocity variations on time scales of several minutes, which are essential to test current pulsation models as well as our assumptions of atmospheric structure characteristics. In addition, their chemical peculiarity makes them very interesting for probing stellar formation and evolution in the presence of a global magnetic field. To date, a limited number of only 61 roAp stars is known to show photometric variability. On the other hand, a literature survey yields 619 unique stars that have unsuccessfully been searched for variability of this kind. Str o¨mgren-Crawford uvbyβ photometry of stars from both subgroups was used to investigate whether there is a selection bias for the investigated stars. We also present new photometric measurements(202 hours on 59 different nights) of 55 roAp candidates. We did not detect any new roAp star. Although our detection limits are comparable to other surveys, we also did not find pulsations in the known roAp star HD 12098, which may be a consequence of temporal amplitude changes. On the other hand, we do find some evidence for photometric variability of beta CrB at its spectroscopically derived pulsation period. From the uvbyβ photometry we conclude that the blue border of the roAp instability strip appears observationally well defined, whereas the red border is rather poorly known and *** these boundaries, a total of 4646 candidates were identified which appear worth investigating for short-term pulsational variability.
