Risk-Layering for Indirect Effects

Environmental risks are one of the greatest threats in the twenty-first *** in the last years,the cascading impacts and risks associated with such events have received great attention as economic losses and consequences have mounted in their *** concerns about these ripple effects are rising,strategies to prevent and manage indirect risks are in urgent ***,such effects are currently barely considered in most countries and can seriously threaten global agendas such as achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 or the targets set out in the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction *** discuss how the concept of risk-layering,which,though already applied in disaster risk management,could be expanded to include indirect *** point out some of the benefits,limitations,and ways forward for using this *** do so,we first delineate the transition of the risk-layering concept,which originated from the insurance industry,from its original use to its application in a wider *** bring special focus to the application of risk-layering in disaster risk management and identify strategies that allow for the inclusion of indirect *** main suggestion is that,while a probabilistic approach is appropriate for evaluating direct risks,a focus on connectedness is appropriate for indirect risks,which still allows for an easy link to direct ***,so we argue,facilitates more comprehensive risk management systems apt to deal with the multi-dimensional challenges ahead.

Enhancing metabolic activity and differentiation potential in adipose mesenchymal stem cells via high-resolution surface-acoustic-wave contactless patterning

Use of improved cold-finger technique to assess effects of basicity on heat transfer through solidified mold flux

Cold-finger measurements were used to estimate the contact resistance and average thermal conductivity of mold flux films solidified on a water-cooled copper *** industrial mold fluxes,with basicities from low to high,were *** steady-state rate of convective heat transfer between the solid film and liquid flux was compared with calculations based on natural convection correlations;the comparison indicates that the surface of the solid film(in contact with molten flux)is approximately at its solidus *** roughness of the mold flux film in contact with copper was larger for films grown from higher-temperature mold flux and for higher-basicity mold *** glassy(low-basicity)film had an estimated thermal conductivity of 1.1 W/(m K).The crystalline or partially crystalline films had higher estimated thermal conductivities of 2.2-3.2 W/(m K).The measured values of thermal resistance were extrapolated to typical mold flux film thicknesses for industrial conditions;the extrapolations confirmed that the high contact resistance of higher-basicity mold fluxes can yield higher thermal resistances than the low-basicity *** morphology of the rough interface of higherbasicity mold flux films that gives the higher contact resistance is consistent with that observed in previous work and appears not to be directly related to crystallization.

Understanding the health and social care needs of people living with IBD: A meta-synthesis of the evidence

AIM:To undertake a metasynthesis of qualitative studies to understand the health and social needs of people living with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). METHODS:A systematic search strategy identified qualitative studies exploring the phenomenon of living with inflammatory bowel disease. Databases included MEDLINE, PsychInfo, EMBASE, CINAHL and the British Nursing Index via the OVID platform. Qualitative search filters were adapted from Hedges database (http://***/hslt/miner/ digital_library/tip_sheets/Cinahl_eb_***). Qualitative empirical studies exploring the health and social needs of people living with inflammatory bowel disease were selected. Study eligibility and data extraction were independently completed using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme for qualitative studies. The studies were analysed and synthesised using metasynthesis methodology. The themes from the studies allowed for common translations into a new interpretation of the impact of living with inflammatory bowel disease. RESULTS:Of 1395 studies, six published studies and one unpublished thesis fulfilled the inclusion criteria. First iteration of synthesis identified 16 themes, 2nd iteration synthesised these into three main 2nd order constructs:"detained by the disease"; "living in a world of disease" and "wrestling with life". "Detained by the disease" is the fear of incontinence, the behaviour the patients display due to the fear, and the impact this has on the individual, such as social isolation and missing out on life events. all of these serve to "pull" the patient back from normal living. "Living in a world of disease" is the long term effects of living with a long term condition and the fear of these effects. "Wrestling with life" is the continued fight to thrive, the "push" to continue normal living. CONCLUSION:The metasynthesis provides a comprehensive representation of living with IBD. Surgical chylothorax in neonates:management and outcomes

Background Postoperative chylothorax occurs due to trauma to lymphatic vessels and can occur after any thoracic *** study reviewed recent literature to evaluate the management and outcomes of surgical chylothorax in *** PubMed database was searched for articles in English,Portuguese and Spanish from 2000 to *** were collected for surgery,chylothorax management,complications,mortality and length of hospital stay(LOS).Results Twenty studies offered 107 neonates:congenital diaphragmatic hernia(CDH)(n=76,71%),cardiac malforma-tions(n=25,23.4%),esophageal atresia(n=5,4.7%)and CDH+extralobar sequestration(n=1,0.9%).Medium-chain tri-glycerides(MCT)was the initial treatment in 52 neonates(48.6%),prednisolone+MCT in one(0.9%),total parenteral nutri-tion in 51 patients(47.7%),and three patients(2.8%)did not require any *** and somatostatin were used as second or third line treatment in 25 neonates(23.4%),and 15 neonates(14%)underwent 17 surgeries,including thoracic duct ligation(TDL)(n=9);pleurodesis(n=3)(2 patients required TDL);TDL+pleurodesis(n=2),and TDL+placement of hemostat(n=1).Complications due to the chylothorax were reported in 27 neonates(25.2%):hypoalbuminemia+hypona-tremia(n=18),hypoalbuminemia(n=4),hypoalbuminemia with cutaneous flushing as colateral effect of somatostatin(n=1),loose stool after somatostatin use(n=1),pneumonia(n=1),congestive heart failure+hypernatremia(n=1),and hyponatremia(n=1).There were 21 deaths(19.6%)and median LOS was 53.4 days(30-93.1 days).Conclusions Conservative management is appropriate as initial treatment for neonatal postsurgical *** and somatostatin are safe in neonates and surgical approach should be considered in prolonged leaks.

Lateralization in monogamous pairs:wild geese prefer to keep their partner in the left hemifield except when disturbed

Behavioural lateralization,which reflects the functional specializations of the two brain hemispheres,is assumed to play an important role in cooperative intraspecific ***,there are few studies focused on the lateralization in cooperative behaviours of individuals,especially in a natural *** the present study,we investigated Iateralized spatial interactions between the partners in life-long monogamous *** male-female pairs of two geese species(barnacle,Branta leucopsis,and white-fronted,Anser albifrons geese),were observed during different stages of the annual cycle in a variety of *** geese flocks,we recorded which visual hemifield(left/right)the following partner used to monitor the leading partner relevant to the type of behaviour and the disturbance *** a significant majority of pairs,the following bird viewed the leading partner with the left eye during routine behaviours such as resting and feeding in undisturbed *** behavioural lateralization,implicating the right hemisphere processing,was consistent across the different aggregation sites and years of the *** contrast,no significant bias was found in a variety of geese behaviours associated with enhanced disturbance(when alert on water,flying or fleeing away when disturbed,feeding during the hunting period,in urban area feeding and during moulting).We hypothesize that the increased demands for right hemisphere processing to deal with stressful and emergency situations may interfere with the manifestation of lateralization in social interactions.

Near-neutral pH corrosion of mill-scaled X-65 pipeline steel with paint primer

The corrosion behaviour of mill-scaled X65 pipeline steel with and without a primer layer was studied in a simulated near-neutral pH soil *** revealed a three-stage corrosion process of the mill-scaled pipeline steel *** first stage included an initial preferential dissolution of goethite(γ-FeOOH)and lepidocrocite(?-FeOOH)in mill *** second stage was marked by enhanced localized corrosion and pit-formation because of either galvanic corrosion or acidic dissolution in areas enclosed by mill *** final stage was general corrosion after the mill scale flaked off the steel *** the primer layer was applied,localized corrosion was significantly enhanced on the steel surface and persisted for an extended period as compared to the mill-scaled *** precipitation of siderite(FeCO3)was observed at flawed locations of mill scale,although the bulk chemistry is not favorable for its formation on the steel surface free of mill *** local precipitation of siderite formed a capped mill scale enclosure where localized corrosion can be further enhanced.
