A practical system of metals-(2,4-pentanedionate) (M(acac)n (M= Fe, Zn, Co and V)) and P2O5 in the pres- ence of HNO3 catalyzes regioselective nitration of ar-himachalene 1 to mono-nitro-ar-himachalene 2 in mod- erate to high yields. Under mild conditions, the selectivity of nitration of 1 to 2 is excellent compared to the classical method using the nitro-sulphuric mixture HNO3/H2SO4, both mono- and di-nitro-ar-himachalene 2 and 3 are obtained. The reaction offers a very good method for the preparation of nitro-aromatic compounds and provides a useful entry to new functionalized terpenic products.

Senegal is a country of the Sahel. In this region, most of the populations live from agro-pastoral activities. The northern zone of Senegal is strongly influenced by river cultures. And the dynamics of the Senegal River are dependent on rainfall. The rainfall in the area is very closely linked to the dynamics of the atmosphere. The study of the spatio-temporal variability of rainfall in the northern region of Senegal requires quality rainfall observation data. It includes the Ferlo and the Senegal River valley, in particular the regions of Louga (department of Linguère included), Saint-Louis (departments of Dagana and Podor included) and Matam. These stations have been defined since Le Borgne (1988). The difficulty of having quality rain observation data can be resolved by using more accessible and good quality satellite data. Using satellite data, namely MSWEP, CRU, TAMSAT, ARC and PERSIANN, we showed the return of precipitation that appeared in 2000 and the unimodal cycle of precipitation in our study area. These data were validated using the correlation coefficient, the bias, the RMSE and the Nash index with observation data from the Regional Study Center for the Improvement of Adaptation to Drought (CERASS). The CRU data is then retained. Thus, this study made it possible to show the zonal distribution of rainfall in the northern zone of Senegal.

Radiological Hazards for Marble and Granite Used at Shak el Thouban Industrial Zone in Egypt

The background level of radiation in the natural environment surrounds us at all times. Levels of natural occurring radioactivity in marble and granite used at Shak el Thouban industrial zone in Cairo, Egypt have been investigated using HPGe detector through gamma-ray spectrometry. The activity concentration of radionuclides in the 238U-, 232Th-series and 40K has been determined. The average activity concentration of 238U, 232Th and 40K for marble samples was 23.77 Bq/kg ranged from (10.91 to 45.4), 10.75 Bq/kg ranged from (5.46 to 23.61) and 520.43 Bq/kg ranged from (382.30 to 1132.41), respectively. The 238U, 232Th and 40K activity concentration for granite samples were 54.31 Bq/kg ranged from (12.04 to 106.34), 113.57 Bq/kg ranged from (23.91 to 270.36) and 7867.51 Bq/kg ranged from (2017.60 to 11436.91), respectively. Concerning the radiological risk, the radium equivalent activity, external and internal radiation hazard indices, the radiation level index and absorbed dose rate were evaluated. The mass exhalation rates of 222Rn and emanation coefficient have been also calculated. The mass exhalation rate of radon was found to be from 14.86 to 137.13 and 16.48 to 155.26 μBq/kg·s for marble and granite samples, respectively. The mean values of the specific activity of 226Ra, activity of 238U before and after sealing time and the mass exhalation rate of radon for granite samples are twice that for marble samples. All radiological indices and the mass exhalation rate of radon are lower than the permissible levels for building material in all marble samples, while all granite samples are higher and unsafe and pose a risk to the workers and users of these products due to the emanation of radon that may accumulate by time, especially in closed spaces.

Several available methods, known in literatures, are available for solving nth order differential equations and their complexities differ based on the accuracy of the solution. A successful method, known to researcher in the area of computational electromagnetic and called the Method of Moment (MoM) is found to have its way in this domain and can be used in solving boundary value problems where differential equations are resulting. A simplified version of this method is adopted in this paper to address this problem, and two differential equations examples are considered to clarify the approach and present the simplicity of the method. As illustrated in this paper, this approach can be introduced along with other methods, and can be considered as an attractive way to solve differential equations and other boundary value problems.

Objectives: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the most common microvascular complications of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). It is multifactorial with the contribution of multiple genetic factors. We questioned the association of polymorphisms in the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor ?2 (PPAR?2) gene (Pro12Ala and C161T) with DR in an Egyptian population. Methods: This case control study included one hundred healthy individuals and 252 T2DM among them 122 with DR and 130 without DR. Genotyping was done by polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). Results: The Pro12Ala Ala allele was associated with decreased risk of DR with an odds ratio (OR) of 0.484, 95% confidence interval (CI) (0.254 - 0.920), and a p value = 0.024. The C161T T allele was associated with increased risk of DR with OR = 2.593, 95% CI (1.672 - 4.020), p 1c) in multivariate regression analysis only C161T was associated with increased risk of DR with OR = 3.479, 95% CI (1.907 - 6.346), p 1c was higher in Pro/Pro genotype when compared to those with Ala/Ala and Pro/Ala genotypes. Conclusion: We report that T allele of C161T increased risk of DR in the studied population. Further studies are warranted to investigate functional implications of polymorphisms of the PPAR-? gene in DR development.

Few cases of Liposarcoma of the spermatic cord have been reported in the literature. This rare tumor represents 7% of malignant tumors of the spermatic cord. We report a case of an unusual liposarcoma of the spermatic cord, with respect to its sclerosing variant, occurring in a healthy looking 42 years old man. A wide local excision of the tumor was performed. Adjuvant radiotherapy may sometimes be effective on local recurrence. Even though this tumor evolves slowly, a prolonged follow up is required because of the risk of late recurrence.

Pancreatic injury in patients with septic shock: A literature review

Sepsis and septic shock are life threatening condition associated with high mortality rate in critically-ill patients. This high mortality is mainly related to the inadequacy between oxygen delivery and cellular demand leading to the onset of multiorgan dysfunction. Whether this multiorgan failure affect the pancreas is not fully investigated. In fact, pancreatic injury may occur because of ischemia, overwhelming inflammatory response, oxidative stress, cellular apoptosis and/or metabolic derangement. Increased serum amylase and/or lipase levels are common in patients with septic shock. However, imaging test rarely reveal significant pancreatic damage. Whether pancreatic dysfunction does affect the prognosis of patients with septic shock or not is still a matter of debate. In fact, only few studies with limited sample size assessed the clinical relevance of the pancreatic injury in this group of patients. In this review, we aimed to describe the epidemiology and the physiopathology of pancreatic injury in septic shock patients, to clarify whether it requires specific management and to assess its prognostic value. Our main finding is that pancreatic injury does not significantly affect the outcome in septic shock patients. Hence, increased serum pancreatic enzymes without clinical features of acute pancreatitis do not require further imaging investigations and specific therapeutic intervention.

Objective:This phase II study aimed at investigating the correlation between O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) promoter methylation and protein expression,together with Ki-67 labeling index (LI),to response,time to progression (TTP),and overall survival (OS) in newly diagnosed glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) patients treated with temozolomide (TMZ) concomitant with and adjuvant to radiotherapy (RT).Methods:From June 2005 to August 2008,34 adult patients (18-65 years),PS ≥70,with newly diagnosed GBM received TMZ 75 mg/m2 plus RT up to 60 Gy,followed by TMZ 175 mg/m2 5 days every 4 weeks for 12 *** Methylation-specific PCR assay,MGMT protein expression,and Ki-67 expression using immunohistochemistry (IHC) were performed on the tissue *** patients were followed by MRI while MR spectroscopy (MRS) was performed for the stable cases or to confirm progression and accordingly Bevacizumab 10 mg/kg every 2 weeks was added to 7 patients till further progression was ***:31 cases were evaluable,12 (38.7%) had unmethylated MGMT,while 19 (61.3%) were *** cases (55%) were MGMT immunonegative while 14 cases (45%) were *** cut off value of Ki-67 LI in relation to survival was 17%,where 15 were < 17% (48.4%),and 16 were ≥ 17% (51.6%).Response evaluation started after the second dose of the adjuvant TMZ and was repeated every 2 *** overall disease control rate (ODC) was 74.2%,where 2 patients had complete response (CR),14 had partial response (PR),and 7 had stable disease (SD),while 8 (25.8%) had progressive disease (PD).The ODC was significantly higher among methylated patients and in those with Ki-67 < 17% (P=0.0003).The median overall TTP was 12 months and the median OS was 20 months for all the patients including those who received Bevacizumab for some stable cases or as a salvage treatment in patients with good PS,the MGMT-methylated patients had a higher median TTP of 13 months (range 8 to 18 months,95% CI

Spontaneous cholecystocutaneous fistula is a rare complication of chronic calculous cholecystitis, because currently gallstones are diagnosed and treated at an early stage. This occurrence is possible even if it seems actually to be rare. We report a case of spontaneous cholecystocutaneous fistula of Anterior Abdominal Wall with subcutaneous gallstones admitted in the medical oncology unit of HASSAN II University Hospital. An 64-year-old woman, presented with a large subcutaneous abscess in the right subcostal area with swelling. An abdominal computed tomography scan showed a subcutaneous gallstone and communication between the abscess and the gallbladder. Cholecystectomy was performed and the abdominal wall abscess was drained externally. This case report demonstrates that maintaining a high degree of suspicion of this rare entity is helpful in achieving correct preoperative diagnosis, and that computed tomography scan should be performed in all cases of unexplained abdominal wall suppuration.

The thermal, rheological and morphological properties of composite biomaterials made with mixture of high density polyethylene and typha rod powder (RD) were evaluated. The dynamic mechanical behavior of the samples was studied with 25%, 35% and 45% typha stem powder concentrations. The viscoelastic properties are mainly related to the nature of the polymer and the typha stem powder. Storage (G') and loss (G') moduli increased significantly, depending on the amount of powder in the molten mixture. After a viscosity increase was noticed in low frequency, it decreased in high frequencies, which demonstrates the pseudo-plasticity effect. Morphological and thermal characterization results have shown the dispersion state of the powder and its ability to modify the kinetics crystallization of biocomposites.
