Examining the relationship between physical fitness and spiritual fitness in cancer patients: A pilot study

AIM: To examine the relationship between spiritual fitness and overall physical fitness, and their resulting impact on feelings of depression and anxiety in individuals being treated for cancer. METHODS: Thirty patients completed the McG ill Quality of Life questionnaire and the Spiritual Fitness Assessment survey, and were asked to classify themselves as "Religious" or "Non-Religious". After the questionnaires were completed, each patient underwent a comprehensive fitness assessment, which included assessments for VO2 max, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and body composition, as well as height, weight, and resting heart rate and blood pressure. The data collected were averaged and analyzed using a one-way ANOVA test at the 0.05 level of significance. RESULTS: Of the 30 participants, 17 classified themselves as "religious"(R) and 13 classified themselves as "nonreligious"(NR). The R group had a higher body fat percentage and a lower VO2 max than the NR group. However, these results were not significant. It was also determinedthat the R group scored themselves significantly higher than the NR group on the Spiritual Fitness questionnaire, but reported significantly higher levels of depression and anxiety than their non-religious counterparts. CONCLUSION: Health beliefs did not necessarily back up health practice; specifically, those respondents who classified themselves as "religious" reported that their beliefs positively influenced their health behaviors, yet physiological and psychological data did not support this claim.

Steroid hormones, alkylphenol ethoxylates（APEOs） and phthalic acid esters（PAEs） are emerging endocrine disrupting chemicals（EDCs） that can interfere with the endocrine function in organisms at low concentrations. The occurrence, distribution behavior, removal rate and the fate of 31 target EDCs in sewage treatment plants, which consist of various treatment facilities and receiving water in Hong Kong, were investigated. Estrone,nonylphenol-di-ethoxylate and diethyl phthalate were found to be dominant in each group of influent samples with concentrations ranging from 11–33, 747–3945 and 445–4635 ng/L,respectively. Conversely, progesterone, nonylphenol-mono-ethoxylate and bis（2-ethylhexyl）phthalate were the most abundant in dewatered sludge, with concentrations ranging from 0.9–237, 75–19,743 and 4310–37,016 ng/g（dry weight）. The removal rates of primary sedimentation and disinfection approaches were lower than 30% for most of the chemicals,while those of activated sludge and reverse osmosis were greater than 80% for more than two-thirds of the compounds, noticeably decreasing the estrogenic risk of sewage discharged into the environment. Steroid hormones were removed via biological degradation, while some APEOs and PAEs adsorbed to the sludge. Victoria Harbor poses a low to medium estrogenic risk mainly contributed by estrone and estradiol and deserves attention.

Inverse design is an outstanding challenge in disordered systems with multiple length scales such as polymers,particularly when designing polymers with desired phase *** we demonstrate high-accuracy tuning of poly(2-oxazoline)cloud point via machine *** a design space of four repeating units and a range of molecular masses,we achieve an accuracy of 4℃ root mean squared error(RMSE)in a temperature range of 24–90℃,employing gradient boosting with decision *** RMSE is>3x better than linear and polynomial *** perform inverse design via particle-swarm optimization,predicting and synthesizing 17 polymers with constrained design at 4 target cloud points from 37 to 80℃.Our approach challenges the status quo in polymer design with a machine learning algorithm,that is capable of fast and systematic discovery of new polymers.

We report our experience in the management of a relapsed ovarian cancer patient with somatic RAD51C mutation,treated with olaparib *** patient was diagnosed with stage 4 high-grade serous ovarian carcinoma and was treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy,cytoreductive surgery,and postoperative *** a second cancer recurrence,she underwent FoundationOne CDx testing following disease progression on multiple lines of *** on the FoundationOne CDx results,olaparib monotherapy was *** 13 months of therapy,all lesions responded to the treatment,and she achieved complete response as demonstrated by normalization of the levels of CA125 and positron emission tomography-computed tomography(PET-CT).We plan to continue olaparib monotherapy until disease progression.

Intraocular pressure fluctuation and the risk of glaucomatous damage deterioration: a Meta-analysis

AIM: To systematically review whether the increased fluctuation of intraocular pressure(IOP) is a risk factor for open angle glaucoma(OAG) progression. METHODS: Scientific studies relevant to IOP fluctuation and glaucoma progression were retrieved from MEDLINE,EMBASE and CENTRAL databases, and were listed as references in this paper. The hazard ratio(HR) was calculated by using fixed or random-effects models according to the heterogeneity of included studies. RESULTS: Individual data for 2211 eyes of 2637 OAG patients in fourteen prospective studies were included in this Meta-analysis. All studies were longitudinal clinical studies with follow-up period ranging from 3 to 8.5 y. The combined HR was 1.23(95%CI 1.04-1.46, P=0.02) for the association between IOP fluctuation and glaucoma onset or progression with the evidence of heterogeneity(Pyses with different types of IOP fluctuation were also evaluated. Results indicated that the summary HR was 0.98(95%CI 0.78-1.24) in short-term IOP fluctuation group, which showed no statistical significance with heterogeneity, whereas, the combined HR was 1.43(95%CI1.13-1.82, P=0.003) in long-term IOP fluctuation group without homogeneity. Sensitivity analysis further showed that the pooled HR was 1.10(95%CI 1.03-1.18, P=0.004) for long-term IOP fluctuation and visual function progression with homogeneity among studies(P=0.3). CONCLUSION: Long-term IOP fluctuation can be a risk factor for glaucoma progression based on the presentedevidence. Thus, controlling the swing of IOP is crucial for glaucoma or glaucoma suspecting patients.
