Clinical utility of glycated albumin and 1,5-anhydroglucitol in the screening and prediction of diabetes:A multi-center study

BACKGROUND Despite being the gold standard,the use of glycated hemoglobin(HbA1c)and fasting plasma glucose(FPG)for diagnosing dysglycemia is *** particular,a low level of agreement between HbA1c and FPG in detecting prediabetes and diabetes has led to difficulties in clinical *** albumin(GA)and 1,5-anhydroglucitol(1,5-AG)may potentially serve as biomarkers for the detection and prediction of diabetes,as well as glycemic *** To explore the diagnostic performance of GA and 1,5-AG for screening dysglycemia;assess whether they can be used for glycemic monitoring in Chinese morbidly-obese patients;and examine their predictive ability for incident diabetes in a Chinese community-based *** GA and 1,5-AG concentrations were measured in 462 morbidly-obese patients from the Obese Chinese Cohort(OCC).A sub-group of diabetes subjects(n=24)was prospectively followed-up after bariatric *** between baseline and post-surgery biomarker values were converted to percentage change from baseline to assess the response to glycemic *** ability of the biomarkers was assessed in 132 incident diabetes cases and 132 matched non-diabetes controls in the community-based Cardiovascular Risk Factor Prevalence Study(CRISPS).A prediction model was developed and compared with clinical models based on conventional risk *** GA exhibited an excellent diagnostic value with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve(AUC)of 0.919(95%CI:0.884-0.955)for identifying diabetes and a high agreement in the classification of diabetes with both FPG and HbA1c in the *** demonstrated the fastest response to glycemic *** CRISPS,the‘B3A’prediction model,which consisted of body mass index(BmI)and 3 biomarkers(HbA1c,GA and 1,5-AG),achieved a comparable predictive value[AUC(95%CI):0.793(0.744-0.843)]to that of a clinical model comprising BmI,HbA1c,FPG and 2-hour glucose(2hG)[AUC(95%CI):0.783(0.733-0.834)

Background: musculoskeletal injuries(mSkIs) are a leading cause of health care utilization, as well as limited duty and disability in the US military and other armed forces. mSkIs affect members of the military during initial training,operational training, and deployment and have a direct negative impact on overall troop readiness. Currently, a systematic overview of all risk factors for mSkIs in the military is not ***: A systematic literature search was carried out using the Pubmed, Ovid/medline, and Web of Science databases from January 1, 2000 to September 10, 2019. Additionally, a reference list scan was performed(using the “snowball method”). Thereafter, an international, multidisciplinary expert panel scored the level of evidence per risk factor, and a classification of modifiable/non-modifiable was ***: In total, 176 original papers and 3 meta-analyses were included in the review. A list of 57 reported potential risk factors was formed. For 21 risk factors, the level of evidence was considered moderate or strong. Based on this literature review and an in-depth analysis, the expert panel developed a model to display the most relevant risk factors identified, introducing the idea of the “order of importance” and including concepts that are modifiable/nonmodifiable, as well as extrinsic/intrinsic risk ***: This is the qualitative systematic review of studies on risk factors for mSkIs in the military that has attempted to be all-inclusive. A total of 57 different potential risk factors were identified, and a new, prioritizing injury model was developed. This model may help us to understand risk factors that can be addressed, and in which order they should be prioritized when planning intervention strategies within military groups.

Effects of UV radiation on the RNA/DNA ratio of Copepods from Antarctica and Chile

The effect of ultraviolet （UV） radiation on marine organisms has been an important focus of recent research, with depletion of the ozone layer resulting in increased UV radiation at high latitudes. Several studies have identified negative impacts of UV radiation on the biology of zooplanktonic organisms. This study used the RNA/DNA ratio as a measure of stress in copepod assemblages from Fildes Bay in Antarctica and Quintay Bay on the central coast of Chile, two areas with high UV radiation but different photobiologic histories. Controlled time-light experiments were performed with copepods from the two locations, exposing them to white light, UV light, or darkness. The results showed different responses to UV radiation. Copepods from Fildes Bay showed a slow metabolic response to UV radiation after 4 and 8 h of exposure. Copepods from Quintay Bay showed a fast metabolic response after 4 h of exposure （4 orders of magnitude higher than that for Fildes Bay copepods） followed by a rapid return toward baseline after 8 h of exposure. These different responses probably reflect the time the eopepod assemblages have been exposed to increased UV radiation and the extent of adaptive stress responses to cope with that increased UV radiation. The results of this study show that the RNA/DNA ratio is a useful indicator of the physiologic status of marine organisms and is a useful tool to measure the effects of changing environmental conditions on marine ecosystems, such as those associated with global climate change.

Disparities in maternal mental health outcomes persist despite the myriad of existing evidence based treatments and recent public health prevention policy efforts. Integrated health care delivery models such as Collaborative Care and patient medical home models have the potential to reduce health disparities in clinic settings. These evidence-based approaches require multidisciplinary teams for successful implementation and to provide quality care to improve specified patient outcomes. However, strategies for successful collaboration and steps for critical reflection are often overlooked in clinical and health services research. Furthermore, a shared vision of social justice is essential in the process of building and sustaining patient-centered care models, but is often understated. The purpose of this paper is to describe the development and implementation of a social justice-informed hospital-based perinatal depression registry to address maternal health disparities. Our partnership is informed by community-based participatory research (CBPR) principles for carrying out health services research. We describe the steps for building a sustainable university-hospital collaboration between traditional and non-traditional researchers using principles from CBPR in a clinic setting.

We use an automated research platform combined with machine learning to assess and understand the resilience against air and light during production of organic photovoltaic(OPV)devices from over 40 donor and acceptor *** standardized protocol and high reproducibility of the platform results in a dataset of high variety and veracity to deploy machine learning models to encounter links between stability and chemical,energetic,and mor-phological *** find that the strongest predictor for air/light resilience during production is the effective gap Eg,eff which points to singlet oxygen rather than the superoxide anion being the dominant agent in degradation under processing conditions.A similarly good prediction of air/light resilience can also be achieved by considering only features from chemical structure,that is,information which is available prior to any experimentation.

Exploring the Relationship between Obstetrical Nurses’ Work and Pregnancy Outcomes

The Registered Nurses Association of Ontario Healthy Work Environments Best Practice Guideline recommends that employers promote safe, healthy workplaces. Healthy workplaces include addressing the unique needs of nurses who work while pregnant. The purpose of this descriptive study, summarizing information from 120 pregnancies reported by 95 nurses, was to determine if the workload of obstetrical nurses was associated with negative pregnancy outcomes, including preterm delivery and birth weight. Full-time obstetrical nursing work is a predictor of reduced birth weight, but not of preterm birth when compared to outcomes of obstetrical nurses working part time. One third of nurses reported pregnancy complications and most nurses experienced work-related and personal stress. Further research evaluating work modifications during pregnancy is indicated to improve birth outcomes.
