Parenting preschoolers with autism: Socioeconomic influences on wellbeing and sense of competence

BACKGRoUND Previous research suggests that parents raising a child with autism experience higher levels of psychological distress than parents of typically developing children and parents of children with other developmental disorders. little is known, however, about the intersection between the effects of socioeconomic status(SES) on the wellbeing and sense of parental competency of parents of preschoolers with autism and how it relates to child symptom *** To examine the relationship between their child's symptom severity, SES, as measured by neighbourhood advantage and occupational status, on the psychological wellbeing and perceived parenting competence among parents of preschoolers with *** Parents of 117 preschool-aged children with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder(ASD), 107 mothers and 54 fathers, completed questionnaires about their child's symptoms of ASD and functioning, their own perceptions of their wellbeing and parental competence on entry to an early intervention program in Sydney, Australia. Parents also provided demographic information pertaining to their occupation, level of education attained and address(postcode). All children were also assessed for their severity of symptoms using the Autism Diagnostic observation Schedule. Mercury bioaccumulation in aquatic biota along a salinity gradient in the Saint John River estuary

Although estuaries are critical habitats for many aquatic species, the spatial trends of toxic methylmercury（MeHg） in biota from fresh to marine waters are poorly understood. our objective was to determine if MeHg concentrations in biota changed along a salinity gradient in an estuary. Fourspine Stickleback（Apeltes quadracus）, invertebrates（snails,amphipods, and chironomids）, sediments, and water were collected from ten sites along the Saint John River estuary, New Brunswick, Canada in 2015 and 2016, with salinities ranging from 0.06 to 6.96. Total mercury（proxy for MeHg） was measured in whole fish and MeHg was measured in a subset of fish, pooled invertebrates, sediments, and water. Stable sulfur（δ34S）, carbon（δ13 C）, and nitrogen（δ15N） isotope values were measured to assess energy sources（S, C） and relative trophic level（N）. There were increases in biotic δ13C and δ34S from fresh to more saline sites and these measures were correlated with *** aqueous MeHg was higher at the freshwater than more saline sites, only chironomid MeHg increased significantly with salinity. In the Saint John River estuary, there was little evidence that MeHg and its associated risks increased along a salinity gradient.

Seed size and composition are important traits in food crops and can be affected by nutrient availability in the soil. Phosphorus （P） is a non-renewable, essential macronutrient, and P deficiency limits soybean （G1ycine max） yield and quality. To investigate the associations of seed traits in low- and high-P environ- ments, soybean recombinant inbred lines （RIls） from a cross of cultivars Fiskeby III and Mandarin （ottawa） were grown under contrasting P availability environments. Traits including individual seed weight, seed number, and intact mature pod weight were significantly affected by soil P levels and showed transgressive segregation among the RIls. Surprisingly, P treatments did not affect seed composition or weight, suggesting that soybeanmaintains sufficient P in seeds even in Iow-P soil. Quantitative trait loci （QTls） were detected for seed weight, intact pods, seed volume, and seed protein, with five significant QTls identified in Iow-P environments and one significant QTl found in the optimaI-P environment. Broad-sense heritability estimates were 0.78 （individual seed weight）, *** （seed protein）, 0.34 （seed oil）, and 0.98 （seed number）. The QTls identified under low P point to genetic regions that may be useful to improve soybean performance under limiting P conditions.

Heat stress significantly impairs reproduction of sheep,and under current climatic conditions is a significant risk to the efficiency of the meat and wool production,with the impact increasing as global temperatures *** from field studies and studies conducted using environmental chambers demonstrate the effects of hot temperatures(≥32℃)on components of ewe fertility(oestrus,fertilisation,embryo survival and lambing)are most destructive when experienced from 5 d before until 5 d after *** controlled studies also demonstrate that ram fertility,as measured by rates of fertilisation and embryo survival,is reduced when mating occurs during the period 14 to 50 d ***,the contribution of the ram to heat induced reductions in flock fertility is difficult to determine *** primarily on temperature controlled studies,it is clear that sustained exposure to high temperatures(≥32℃)during pregnancy reduces lamb birthweight and will,therefore,decrease lamb survival under field *** is concluded that both ewe and ram reproduction is affected by relatively modest levels of heat stress(≥32℃)and this is a concern given that a significant proportion of the global sheep population experiences heat stress of this magnitude around mating and during *** this,strategies to limit the impacts of the climate on the homeothermy,behaviour,resource use and reproduction of extensively grazed sheep are limited,and there is an urgency to improve knowledge and to develop husbandry practices to limit these impacts.

Introduction Patients with stroke-like symptoms may be underutilising emergency medical services and avoiding hospitalisation during the CoVID-19 *** investigated a decline in admissions for stroke and transient ischaemic attack(TIA)and emergency department(ED)stroke alert *** We retrospectively compiled total weekly hospital admissions for stroke and TIA between 31 December 2018 and 21 April 2019 versus 30 December 2019 and 19 April 2020 at five US tertiary academic comprehensive stroke centres in cities with early CoVID-19 outbreaks in Boston,New York City,Providence and *** collected available data on ED stroke alerts,stroke severity using the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale(NIHSS)and time from symptom onset to hospital *** Compared with 31 December 2018 to 21 April 2019,a decline in stroke/TIA admissions and ED stroke alerts occurred during 30 December 2019 to 19 April 2020(p trendor each).The declines coincided with state stay-at home recommendations in late *** greatest decline in hospital admissions was observed between 23 March and 19 April 2020,with a 31%decline compared with the corresponding weeks in *** of the five centres with 2019 and 2020 stroke alert data had a 46%decline in ED stroke alerts in late March and April 2020,compared with *** baseline NIHSS during these 4 weeks was 10 in 2020 and 7 in *** was no difference in time from symptom onset to hospital *** At these five large academic US hospitals,admissions for stroke and TIA declined during the CoVID-19 *** was a trend for fewer ED stroke alerts at three of the five centres with available 2019 and 2020 *** stroke therapies are time-sensitive,so decreased healthcare access or utilisation may lead to more disabling or fatal strokes,or more severe non-neurological complications related to *** findings underscore the indirect effects of this *** health offici

Background:Variable retention(aggregated and dispersed retention)harvesting proposed for Nothofagus pumilio was designed for timber purposes and biodiversity *** by opening canopy generates different microenvironments and creates contrasting conditions for seedling establishment,growth,and eco-physiology performance due to synergies(positives or negatives)with biotic and abiotic *** study evaluated the regeneration in different microenvironment conditions within managed stands during 5 years after *** forest structure after harvesting and different microenvironments were characterized in managed stands,where 105 regeneration plots were measured(3 stands×7 microenvironments×5 replicas).We characterized the seedling bank,as well as growth and ecophysiology performance of the *** and multivariate analyses were conducted for the ***:Microenvironments offered different environmental conditions for natural regeneration(soil moisture and light availability).Seedling under debris and dicot plants showed better eco-physiological performance,establishment,and growth than plants growing under monocots or located in the dispersed retention without the protection of other understory *** most unfavorable microenvironment conditions were high canopy cover of remnant trees(inside the aggregates or close to trees in the dispersed retention)and heavily impacted areas(skidder extraction roads).Conclusions:Favorable microenvironments in the harvested areas will improve the natural recruitment,growth,and eco-physiology performance of the natural regeneration after *** is necessary to develop new silvicultural practices that decrease the unfavorable microenvironments(e.g.,road density or excessive woody accumulation),to assure the success of the proposed silvicultural method.

Synergistic Antitumor Activity of Vitamins C and K3 on Human Bladder Cancer Cell lines

Exponentially growing cultures of human bladder tumor cells (RT4 and T24) were treated with Vitamin C (VC) alone, Vitamin K3 (VK3) alone, or with a VC:VK3 combination continuously for 5 days or treated with vitamins for 1 h, washed with PBS and then incubated in culture medium for 5 days. Co-administration of the vitamins enhanced the antitumor activity 12- to 24-fold for the RT-4 cells and 6- to 41-fold for the T24 cells. Flow cytometry of RT4 cells exposed to the vitamins revealed a growth arrested population and a population undergoing cell death. Growth arrested cells were blocked near the G0/G1-S-phase interface, while cell death was due to autoschizis. Catalase treatment abrogated both cell cycle arrest and cell death which implicated hydrogen peroxide (H2o2) in these processes. The H2o2 production resulted in a moderate increase in lipid peroxidation and depletion of cell thiol levels. Analysis of cellular ATP levels revealed a transient increase in ATP production for VC and the VC:VK3 combination, but decreased ATP levels following VK3 treatment. lipid peroxidation, thiol depletion and ATP modulation occurred at a 17-fold lower concentration in the vitamin combination than with either vitamin alone. These results suggested that the increased cytotoxicity of the vitamin combination was due to redox cycling and increased oxidative stress.

目的　研究新疆环境补碘新方法对婴儿死亡和儿童发育的影响。方法　用补碘前和补碘后 2乡历年 5岁儿童尿碘、身高和头围监测资料 ,以美国同龄儿童为参照计算Z得分。用logistic回归方法分析 4乡 3县 1988～ 1999年的婴儿死亡和新生儿死亡数据。结果　环境补碘后婴儿死亡相对风险比降低了 5 6 .4 9% ,新生儿死亡相对风险比降低了 6 5 .71% ;控制是否补碘变量后 ,实验区和对照区婴儿死亡或新生儿死亡差异无显著性。朗如乡 5岁儿童平均身高由 1992年的 95cm提高到 1998～1999年的 10 6 .9cm ;同期平均头围由 4 8.4cm提高到 5 0 .5cm ;尿碘中位值由补碘前低于 10 μg/l提高到 176 μg/l。巴克其乡 5岁儿童平均身高由 1993年的 91cm提高到 1998～ 1999年的 10 6 .5cm ;同期平均头围由 4 8.7cm提高到 4 9.6cm ;尿碘中位值由 39μg/l提高到 138μg/l。结论　新疆和田地区的环境补碘方法显著地降低了婴儿、新生儿死亡率 ,极大地改善了儿童的生长发育状况。
