Solvent-Less Vapor-Phase Fabrication of Membranes for Sustainable Separation Processes

Sustainable processes for purifying water,capturing carbon,producing biofuels,operating fuel cells,and performing energy-efficient industrial separations will require next-generation ***-less fabrication for membranes not only eliminates potential environmental issues with organic solvents,but also solves the swelling problems that occur with delicate polymer ***,the activation procedures often required for synthesizing microporous materials such as metal–organic frameworks(MOFs)can be reduced when solvent-less vapor-phase approaches are *** perspective covers several vacuum deposition processes,including initiated chemical vapor deposition(iCVD),initiated plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition(iPECVD),solvent-less vapor deposition followed by in situ polymerization(SLIP),atomic layer deposition(ALD),and molecular layer deposition(MLD).These solvent-less vapor-phase methods are powerful in creating ultrathin selective layers for thin-film composite membranes and advantageous in conformally coating nanoscale pores for the precise modification of pore size and internal *** resulting membranes have shown promising performance for gas separation,nanofiltration,desalination,and water/oil *** development of novel membrane materials and the scaling up of high-throughput reactors for solvent-less vapor-phase processes are necessary in order to make a real impact on the chemical industry in the future.

Understanding the prevalent form of platinum(Pt)based antineoplastic agents,used in chemotherapy,is of importance to develop a remediation strategy that restricts aquatic *** speciation of Pt-based compounds was measured in actual patients’urine using hydrophobic interaction liquid chromatography(HILIC)equipped with an ICP-MS *** showed poor metabolization and intact excretion 11 h after administration,whereas cisplatin underwent a rapid aquation in the first 7 *** compare,the in vitro degradation rate of cisplatin,carboplatin and oxaliplatin was determined in synthetic human urine,mimicking true environmental *** fraction of intact molecules was measured at regular intervals following incubation at 37°C,resulting in degradation rate *** chemical stability was highest for carboplatin(k=0.0143±0.0012 min−1),versus faster degradation of oxaliplatin and cisplatin by exponential decay with k1 of 0.0026±0.0001 min−1 and k_(2)=5.59±0.46×10^(−6) min−1,*** kinetic parameters can serve as input to further expand modelling databases and improve the predictive power of speciation software to estimate eco-toxicity *** the strong residual cytotoxicity of the platinum antineoplastic molecules following renal clearance and human excretion,the contaminants are of high environmental concern and offer potential for metal recovery using advanced treatment *** such water treatment processes,especially carboplatin,above all cancerostatic platinum compounds,should be addressed since it is more persistent in the aquatic environment.

Bactrocera tryoni and Bactrocera neohumeralis are morphologically similar sibling pest fruit fly species that possess different biological attributes,geographic distributions,and host *** need to differentiate between the two species is critical for accurate pest status assessment,management,biosecurity,and maintenance of reference *** morphologically similar,adults may be separated based on subtle characters;however,some characters exhibit intraspecific variability,creating overlap between the two ***,there is currently no single molecular marker or rapid diagnostic assay that can reliably distinguish between *** and ***;therefore,ambiguous samples remain *** we report the first molecular marker that can consistently distinguish between *** and *** diagnostic region consists of two adjacent single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs)within the pangolin(pan)gene *** confirmed the genotypes of each species are consistent across their distributional range,then developed a tetra-primer amplification refractory mutation system(ARMS)PCR assay for rapid diagnosis of the *** assay utilizes four primers in multiplex,with two outer universal primers,and two internal primers:one designed to target two adjacent SNPs(AA)present in *** and the other targeting adjacent SNPs present in ***(GG).The assay accurately discriminates between the two species,but their SNP genotypes are shared with other nontarget tephritid fruit fly ***,this assay is most suited to adult diagnostics where species confirmation is necessary in determining ambiguous surveillance trap catches;maintaining pure colony lines;and in Sterile Insect Technique management responses.

Pediatric inflammatory bowel disease

Inflammatory bowel disease is an important cause of gastrointestinal pathology in children and adolescents. The incidence of pediatric inflammatory bowel disease is increasing; therefore, it is important for the clinician to be aware of the presentation of this disease in the pediatric population. Laboratory tests, radiology studies, and endoscopic procedures are helpful in diagnosing inflammatory bowel disease and differentiating between Crohn＇s disease and ulcerative colitis. Once diagnosed, the goal of medical management is to induce remission of disease while minimizing the side effects of the medication. Specific attention needs to be paid to achieving normal growth in this susceptible population. Surgical management is usually indicated for failure of medical management, complication, or malignancy. Algorithms for diagnostic evaluation and treatment of pediatric inflammatory bowel disease are presented. The specific psychosocial issues facing these patients are also discussed in this review as are the future goals of research in the complex problem of pediatric inflammatory bowel disease.

Dyeing of Polypropylene Fibers with Vat Dyes

Polypropylene fibers have been extensively used in a variety of/products, including carpets and upholstery, due to their non-absorbency, good weather resistance, good resistance to macroorgamsms and so on. Because of their hydrophobic and highly crystalline nature, those well-established conventionai dyeing processes are difficult to apply to unmodified polypropylene. Colors of polypropylene fibers are primarily obtained by mass coloration which has the disadvantages of limited number of colors available and difficulties in inventory control due to the rapidly changing color needs of the market. In this paper, the use of vat dyes to dye polypropylene fabrics is investigated. Seventeen vat dyes were screened and factors influencing uptake of dyes by polypropylene fabrics were studied.

Upper gastrointestinal function and glycemic control in diabetes mellitus

Recent evidence has highlighted the impact of glycemic control on the incidence and progression of diabetic micro- and macrovascular complications, and on cardiovascular risk in the non-diabetic population. Postprandial blood glucose concentrations make a major contribution to overall glycemic control, and are determined in part by upper gastrointestinal function. Conversely, poor glycemic control has an acute, reversible effect on gastrointestinal motility. Insights into the mechanisms by which the gut contributes to glycemia have given rise to a number of novel dietary and pharmacological strategies designed to lower postprandial blood glucose concentrations.

Colon adenoma features and their impact on risk of future advanced adenomas and colorectal cancer

AIMTo review the evidence on the association between specific colon adenoma features and the risk of future colonic neoplasia [adenomas and colorectal cancer (CRC)]. METHODSWe performed a literature search using the National Library of Medicine through PubMed from 1/1/2003 to 5/30/2015. Specific Medical Subject Headings terms (colon, colon polyps, adenomatous polyps, epidemiology, natural history, growth, cancer screening, colonoscopy, CRC) were used in conjunction with subject headings/key words (surveillance, adenoma surveillance, polypectomy surveillance, and serrated adenoma). We defined non-advanced adenomas as 1-2 adenomas each 25% villous histology or high-grade dysplasia. A combined endpoint of advanced neoplasia included advanced adenomas and invasive CRC. RESULTSOur search strategy identified 592 candidate articles of which 8 met inclusion criteria and were relevant for assessment of histology (low grade vs high grade dysplasia, villous features) and adenoma size. Six of these studies met the accepted quality indicator threshold for overall adenoma detection rate > 25% among study patients. We found 254 articles of which 7 met inclusion criteria for the evaluation of multiple adenomas. Lastly, our search revealed 222 candidate articles of which 6 met inclusion criteria for evaluation of serrated polyps. Our review found that villous features, high grade dysplasia, larger adenoma size, and having ≥ 3 adenomas at baseline are associated with an increased risk of future colonic neoplasia in some but not all studies. Serrated polyps in the proximal colon are associated with an increased risk of future colonic neoplasia, comparable to having a baseline advanced adenoma. CONCLUSIONData on adenoma features and risk of future adenomas and CRC are compelling yet modest in absolute effect size. Future research should refine this risk stratification.

Characterization of a Putative Filovirus Vaccine:Virus-Like Particles

Filoviruses are hemorrhagic fever viruses endemic to parts of Africa and the Philippines. Infection carries with it a mortality rate of up to 90% and currently there are no effective vaccines or therapeutics available to combat infection. However, the filovirus virus-like particles (VLP), which are currently under development, have been shown to be a promising vaccine candidate. They provide protection from infection in the mouse, guinea pig, and nonhuman primate models of infection, eliciting high anti-glycoprotein antibody titers and T cell responses to viral proteins. In this review, we will highlight the development of the filovirus VLP and describe the current understanding of VLP immunogenicity and correlates of protection.
