BACKGROUnD Malnutrition is prevalent in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Multiple nutrition screening (nST) and assessment tools (nAT) have been developed for general populations, but the evidence in patients with IBD remains unclear. AIM To systematically review the prevalence of abnormalities on nSTs and nATs, whether nSTs are associated with nATs, and whether they predict clinical outcomes in patients with IBD. METHODS Comprehensive searches performed in Medline, CInAHL Plus and PubMed. Included: English language studies correlating nSTs with nATs or nSTs/nATs with clinical outcomes in IBD. Excluded: Review articles/case studies;use of body mass index/laboratory values as sole nST/nAT;agend 1618 patients were included, 72% Crohn’s disease and 28% ulcerative colitis. Four nSTs (the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool, Malnutrition Inflammation Risk Tool (MIRT), Saskatchewan Inflammatory Bowel Disease nutrition Risk Tool (SaskIBD-nRT) and nutrition Risk Screening 2002 (nRS-2002) were significantly associated with nutritional assessment measures of sarcopenia and the Subjective Global Assessment (SGA). Three nSTs (MIRT, nRS-2002 and nutritional Risk Index) were associated with clinical outcomes including hospitalizations, need for surgery, disease flares, and length of stay (LOS). Sarcopenia was the most commonly evaluated nAT associated with outcomes including the need for surgery and post-operative complications. The SGA was not associated with clinical outcomes aside from LOS. COnCLUSIOn There is limited evidence correlating nSTs, nATs and clinical outcomes in IBD. Although studies support the association of nSTs/nATs with relevant outcomes, the heterogeneity calls for further studies before an optimal tool can be recommended. The nRS-2002, measures of sarcopenia and developments of novel nSTs/nATs, such as the MIRT, represent key, clinically-relevant areas for future exploration.

Objectives The predisposition of intracranial atherosclerotic disease(ICAD)to East Asians over Caucasians infers a genetic basis which,however,remains largely *** prevalence of vascular risk factors(VRFs)in Chinese over Caucasian patients who had a stroke,and shared risk factors of ICAD with other stroke subtypes indicate genes related to VRFs and/or other stroke subtypes may also contribute to *** Unrelated symptomatic patients with ICAD were recruited for genome sequencing(GS,60-fold).Rare and potentially deleterious single-nucleotide variants(SnVs)and small insertions/deletions(InDels)were detected in genome-wide and correlated to genes related to VRFs and/or other stroke *** aneuploidies,copy number variants(CnVs)and chromosomal structural rearrangements were also ***,candidate genes were used for pathway and gene ontology enrichment *** Among 92 patients(mean age at stroke onset 61.0±9.3 years),GS identified likely ICAD-associated rare genomic variants in 54.3%(50/92)of ***-eight patients(52.2%,48/92)had 59 rare SnVs/InDels reported or predicted to be deleterious in genes related to VRFs and/or other stroke *** of the 59 rare variants were identified in local subjects without ICAD(n=126).31 SnVs/InDels were related to conventional VRFs,and 28 were discovered in genes related to other stroke *** study also showed that rare CnVs(n=7)and structural rearrangement(a balanced translocation)were potentially related to ICAD in 8.7%(8/92)of ***,candidate genes were significantly enriched in pathways related to lipoprotein metabolism and cellular lipid catabolic *** Our GS study suggests a role of rare genomic variants with various variant types contributing to the development of ICAD in Chinese patients.

Arsenic contamination is a major environmental issue,as it may lead to serious health *** reduced trivalent formof inorganic arsenic,arsenite,is in generalmore toxic to plants comparedwith the fully oxidized pentavalent *** arsenite inplants hasbeenshown tobemediatedthrough a large subfamily of plant aquaglyceroporins,nodulin 26-like intrinsic proteins(nIPs).However,the efflux mechanisms,as well as themechanismof arsenite-induced root growth inhibition,remain poorly *** physiology,synchrotron imaging,and root transport assay approaches,we show that the cellular transport of trivalent arsenicals inArabidopsis thalianais stronglymodulatedbyPInFORMED2(PIn2)auxin efflux *** transport assay using radioactive arsenite,X-ray fluorescence imaging(XFI)coupled with X-ray absorption spectroscopy(XAS),and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry analysis revealed that pin2 plants accumulate higher concentrations of arsenite in roots comparedwith the *** the cellular level,arsenite specifically targets intracellular sorting of PIn2 and thereby alters the cellular auxin ***,loss of PIn2 function results in arsenite hypersensitivity in *** coupled with XAS further revealed that loss of PIn2 function results in specific accumulation of arsenical species,but not the other metals such as iron,zinc,or calcium in the root ***,these results suggest that PIn2 likely functions as an arsenite efflux transporter for the distribution of arsenical species in planta.

This exploratory study examines nutrition literacy in two parts: 1) the level of attention to health literacy among nutrition professionals, and 2) the nutrition professional’s perspective of skills/ knowledge needed to understand nutrition education. Part 1 included an online survey in which RD participants (n = 206), recruited from three dietetic practice groups, identified use of health literacy assessments during client education. Most participants (79%) did not use a validated health literacy assessment. There was a significant difference in response to having written materials for different health literacy levels depending on time spent providing nutrition education, with those sending less time in education responding they more often had more materials (Chi-square 8.6, p = 0.035) and depending on job description, public health more often than outpatient dietitian (p = 0.006). Part 2 utilized key informant interviews (n = 8), administered by telephone. Content analysis revealed a significant theme among answers that the skills required for understanding diet education is dependent on the type of diet instruction provided, with diabetes frequently noted as a disease requiring greater knowledge and skills. nutrition educators need an instrument to assess client nutrition literacy. Potential instruments should assess skills related to portion size estimation, macronutrient knowledge, interpretation of food labels, and food grouping.

Drug-Seeking Behavior Is Significantly Attenuated in nutritionally Supplemented Cocaine Withdrawn Sprague-Dawley Rats

Aim: The effect of patented nutritional supplementation on drug-seeking behavior in cocaine addicted rats during acute drug withdrawal was investigated using a biased Conditioned Place Preference (CPP) paradigm. Method: Twenty-four (24) male Sprague-Dawley rats with pre-conditioned preference for the black chamber of the CPP box were randomly divided into Cocaine (COC) or Saline (SAL) treated groups. Rats (n = 12) treated with cocaine hydrochloride 20 mg/kg/ml, i.p. (COC group) were confined individually to the white chamber on days 1, 3, 5 and 7. On alternate days, they were given 1 ml saline vehicle, i.p. and confined to the black chamber. Control rats (SAL group, n = 12) received only vehicle on all 8 days and were confined on alternate days to the white or black chamber. Positive place preference was confirmed for COC rats, which subsequently received 6 increasing daily doses of cocaine. CPP performances of both COC and SAL rats were recorded following an acute 3-day withdrawal period. All animals were then randomly assigned to rats fed either chow reconstituted with the nutritional supplement (COC-S and SAL-S) or standard rat chow (COC-n and SAL-n) for 8 weeks, followed by final CPP performances. Results: Following supplementation, COC-S rats made significantly less entries and time spent in the white chamber (p n rats. COC-S rats exhibited significant place aversion to the white chamber similar to drug-naive animals;whereas COC-n continued to show positive place preference. Conclusion: Drug-seeking behavior that persisted during cocaine withdrawal was significantly diminished in the nutritionally supplemented.

Actinomycetoma is a chronic subcutaneous lesion caused by the pathogenic bacterium nocardia (n.) brasiliensis. Yeast antigens of Candida (C.) albicans increase the interferon (IFn)-γ and TCD4+ cells levels that enhance the phagocytic killing of n. brasiliensis, able to survive inside phagocytes and to grow in clustered colonies that form grains. The aim of this work was to test the effect of a crude protein extract of C. albicans on the levels of IFn-γ producing TCD4+ cells and on the outcome of actinomycetoma lesion. Five BALB/c mice with n. brasiliensis infection at left hind footpad were treated four times every other day with C. albicans crude protein extract (CPE). Five uninfected mice treated with CPE or infected mice treated with sterile phosphate-saline buffer were included as positive and negative control groups, respectively. Footpad thickness was recorded in all groups. Once the treatments were finished, single cell suspensions from blood and spleen were prepared for assessing the amount (%) of IFn-γ producing TCD4+ cells by cytofluorometry;presence of TCD4+ and IFn-γ in footpad sections was detected by immunofluorescence and immunohistochemistry, respectively. By comparison with the negative control group, infected mice treated with CPE had lower footpad thickness, higher percentage of blood and spleen IFn-γ producing TCD4+ cells as well as in situ presence of IFn-γ and TCD4+ cells. These findings showed that CPE from C. albicans displayed an immunoadjuvant activity that enhanced the presence of IFn-γ producing TCD4+ cells and IFn-γ for the resolution of n. brasiliensis actinomycetoma in mice.
