Investigating the Influence of Glaucoma on the Quality of Life among Adult Patients

Background: Research exploring the influence of glaucoma on quality of life has gained momentum in recent years. Numerous studies have investigated the multifaceted aspects of quality of life in glaucoma patients, utilizing various assessment tools and methodologies. Objective: To determine the influence that glaucoma has on the quality of life among adult patients. Study site: kitwe teaching eye hospital, Zambia. Method: It was a cross-sectional study that was conducted from 30th June 2022 to 17th April 2023. The study included 106 diagnosed glaucoma patients who were above the age of 55 years. Data was collected using validated 25-item national eye institute visual function Questionnaire (NEI VFQ-25). The data was analyzed using SPSS version 26 and Microsoft excel to present frequencies and percentages that generated graphical presentation. Results: 62% of the participants worry about their eye sight most of the time, 26% sometimes and 12% a little time. 9% of the participants had little difficulty to read ordinary prints, 14% moderate difficulties and 58% extremely difficult. 40% of the participants could drive despite glaucoma damaging their eyes while 60% could not. Majority of the patients said it was difficult noticing things around them while walking or sitted in one place. There was a significant difference between effects of glaucoma on patients and the existing relationship between glaucoma and quality of life (ANOVA, p = 0.019 and ANOVA, p = 0.023). Conclusion: This study has demonstrated the magnitude of impact that glaucoma has on the Quality of Life (QoL) in diagnosed patients and the relationship between glaucoma and the Quality of Life. Stability assessme nt of observed tolerance phe no types is integral in un dersta nding stress adaptati on in food-borne ***,the current work was carried out to determine whether ethanol adaptation induced by exposure to 5 percent ethanol for 60 min is a stable phenomenon in Salmonella enterica serovar *** capacity of Salmonella Enteritidis(***)to maintain the acquired ethanol adaptation in the absenee of sublethal ethanol stress was investigated at 37℃,25℃ or 4℃ in Luria-Bertani broth and two types of meat *** was found that ethanol adaptation was completely reversed within 40 min at 37℃ or within 60 min at 25℃,but was stable at 4℃ for at least 48 h in the broth *** adaptation was retained in chicken juice during 60-min incubation at 25℃ or 48h incubation at 4℃.Moreover,exposure to pork juice stored at either 25℃ or 4℃ sigrdficantly(P<0.05)increased the ethanol toleranee of ethanol-adapted ***,these fin dings suggest that ethanol adaptation stability in *** teritidis under cold conditi ons and in meat juices should be take n into acco unt whe n con ducting a comprehensive risk analysis during food processing.

Primary retinal ganglion cells for neuron replacement therapy

Optic nerve damage as a result of trauma, ischemia, glaucoma or other forms of optic neuropathy disease, leads to disconnection between the eye and brain and death of retinal ganglion cells(RGCs), causing permanent loss of vision. Therapeutic options for treating optic neuropathy are limited and represent a significant unmet medical need. Development of a regenerative strategy for replacement of lost RGCs lies at the core of the future cell-based therapy for these conditions. Successful long-term restoration of visual function depends on the type of cells for transplantation. Primary RGCs of neonatal mice are now reported to have the potential for serving such a purpose.

Nitroglycerin reduces augmentation index and central blood pressure independent of effects on cardiac preload

Objective To determine whether reduction in central pressure augmentation and central systolic blood pressure by nitroglycerine (NTG) results from effects on pre-load or is due to arterial dilation. Methods We compared effects of NTG with those of lower body negative pressure (LBNP). Hemodynamic measurements were made at rest,during LBNP (10,20 and 30 mmHg,each for 15 min) and after NTG (10,30 and 100 μg/min,each dose for 15 min) in ten healthy volunteers. Cardiac pre-load,stroke volume and cardiac output were assessed by echocardiography. Central pressure augmentation and central systolic pressure were obtained by radial tonometry using a transfer function. Results LBNP (20 mmHg) and NTG (30 μg/min) reduced pre-load (as measured by the peak velocity of the S wave in the superior vena cava) to a similar degree [by (26.8±3.8)% and (23.9±3.4)%,respectively]. Compared to LBNP,NTG reduced systemic vascular resistance [by (32.9±7.5)%,P<0.01],decreased peripheral and central pressure augmentation [by (20.8±3.4)% units and (12.9±2.9)% units,respectively,each P<0.01]. Conclusion These results suggest that a reduction in pre-load does not explain reduction in pressure augmentation and central systolic blood pressure by NTG and that these effects are mediated through arterial dilation.

Responses to oral glucose challenge differ by physical activity volume and intensity: A pilot study

Background:One-hour postprandial hyperglycemia is associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular *** activity(PA)has short-term beneficial effects on post-meal glucose *** study compared the oral glucose tolerance test results of 3 groups of people with habitually different levels of ***:Thirty-one adults without diabetes(age 25.9±6.6 years;body mass index 23.8±3.8 kg/m^2;mean±SD)were recruited and divided into 3 groups based on self-reported PA volume and intensity:low activitymin/day of moderate-intensity activity(n=11),moderately active≥30 min/day of moderate-intensity PA(n=10),and very active≥60 min/day of PA at high intensity(n=10).Participants completed an oral glucose tolerance test(50 g glucose)with capillary blood samples obtained at baseline,15 min,30 min,45 min,60 min,90 min,and 120 min ***:There were no significant differences between groups for age or body fat percentage or glycated hemoglobin(p>0.05).The groups were significantly different in terms of baseline glucose level(p=0.003)and,marginally,for gender(p=0.053)and BMI(p=0.050).There was a statistically significant effect of PA on the 1-h postprandial glucose results(p=0.029),with differences between very active and low activity groups(p=0.008)but not between the moderately active and low activity groups(p=0.360),even when baseline glucose level and gender differences were accounted *** incremental area under the curve there was no significant effect of activity group once gender and body fat percentage had been accounted for(p=0.401).Those in the low activity group took 15 min longer to reach peak glucose level than those in the very active group(p=0.012).Conclusion:The results suggest that high levels of PA have a beneficial effect on postprandial blood glucose profiles when compared to low and moderate levels of activity.

AIM: To determine gastric emptying, blood pressure, mesenteric artery blood flow, and blood glucose responses to oral glucose in Parkinson’s ***: Twenty-one subjects (13 M, 8 F; age 64.2 ± 1.6 years) with mild to moderate Parkinson’s disease (Hoehn and Yahr score 1.4 ± 0.1, duration of known disease 6.3 ± 0.9 years) consumed a 75 g glucose drink, labelled with 20 MBq 99mTc-calcium phytate. Gastric emptying was quantified with scintigraphy, blood pressure and heart rate with an automated device, superior mesenteric artery blood flow by Doppler ultrasonography and blood glucose by glucometer for 180 min. Autonomic nerve function was evaluated with cardiovascular reflex tests and upper gastrointestinal symptoms by ***: The mean gastric half-emptying time was 106 ± 9.1 min, gastric emptying was abnormally delayed in 3 subjects (14%). Background: Urea pretreatment is an efficient strategy to improve fiber digestibility of low quality roughages for ruminants. Nitrate and oil are usually used to inhibit enteric methane(CH4) emissions from ruminants. The objective of this study was to examine the combined effects of urea plus nitrate pretreated rice straw and corn oil supplementation to the diet on nutrient digestibility, nitrogen(N) balance, CH4 emissions, ruminal fermentation characteristics and microbiota in goats. Nine female goats were used in a triple 3 × 3 Latin Square design(27 d periods). The treatments were: control(untreated rice straw, no added corn oil), rice straw pretreated with urea and nitrate(34 and 4.7 g/kg of rice straw on a dry matter [DM] basis, respectively, UN), and UN diet supplemented with corn oil(15 g/kg soybean and15 g/kg corn were replaced by 30 g/kg corn oil, DM basis, UNCO).Results: Compared with control, UN increased neutral detergent fiber(NDF) digestibility(P minal dissolved CH4 concentration(-24.4%, P < 0.001) and enteric CH4 emissions(-12.6%, P < 0.05).Conclusions: A combination of rice straw pretreated with urea plus nitrate and corn oil supplementation of the diet improved fiber digestibility and lowered enteric CH4 emissions without negative effects on N retention. These strategies improved the utilization of rice straw by goats.

目的了解心脏前负荷减低对中心动脉压及主动脉扩增指数的影响。方法10例健康志愿者,行下肢负压(LB-NP)抽吸造成不同程度前负荷减低。采用超声心动图检测心输出量的变化;采用中心动脉压力分析系统(SphymoCor)检测桡动脉压力波形,经平均转换功能形成中心动脉压力波形。结果①随着下肢负压的加大,上腔静脉血流进行性减低,在-30mmHg阶段,S波减低22.4%,VTIs+d减低了15.8%,同时SV减少24.7%,CO减少18.7%;②中心动脉收缩压(CSBP)除在-30mmHg阶段轻度下降外,在-10及-20mmHg阶段没有明显改变,中心动脉舒张压(CDBP)在各个负压阶段没有明显改变;③主动脉压力波P1在各个负压阶段均明显下降,在-30mmHg阶段,P1减少了19.6%[(28.2±5.02)mmHgvs.(22.65±3.08)mmHg,P<0.01],而总外周阻力(TPR)在各负压阶段均较基础阶段明显升高,在-30mmHg阶段升高21.3%[(16.0±2.9)(***)/Lvs.(20.3±3.4)(***)/L,P<0.001]。主动脉扩增指数(AI)无明显改变。结论前负荷减低使中心主动脉压及主动脉压力波P1降低,同时使TPR升高,由于TPR的升高抵消了P1的降低,因而AI保持不变。

Where are the limits of the effects of exercise intensity on cognitive control?

Purpose： This study aimed to investigate whether workload intensity modulates exercise-induced effect on reaction time （RT） performances, and more specifically to clarify whether cognitive control that plays a crucial role in rapid decision making is altered. Methods： Fourteen participants performed a Simon Task while cycling 20 min at a light （first ventilatory threshold, VT~ - 20%）, moderate （VTI）, or very hard （VTj ＋ 20%） level of exercise. Results： After 15 min of cycling, RTs are faster than during the first 5 min of exercise. This benefit does not fluctuate with the intensity of exercise and enlarges as RT lengthens. Despite a numerical difference suggesting a greater facilitation during moderate exercise （-16 ms） than during a light exercise （-10 ms）, the benefit is not statistically different. Interestingly, we did not observe any signs of worsening on RT or on accuracy during very hard exercise. Conclusion： Cognitive control is extremely robust and appears not to be affected by the intensity of exercise. The selective inhibition and the between-trials adjustments are effective from the beginning to the end of exercise, regardless of the workload output.
