We present a new method to model fracture of concrete based on energy *** concrete is considered on the mesoscale as composite consisting of cement paste,aggregates and micro *** this first step,the alkali-silica reaction is taken into account through damage mechanics though the process is more complex involving thermo-hygro-chemo-mechanical *** use a non-local damage model that ensures the wellposedness of the boundary value problem(BVP).In contrast to existing methods,the interactions between degrees of freedom evolve with the damage *** results are compared to analytical and experimental results and show good agreement.

Response of Hypercholesterolemic Rats to Sesamum indicum Linn Seed Oil Supplemented Diet

Fatty acid composition of Sesamum indicum oil was determined by gas chromatography and the response of hypercholesterolemic rats to diet supplemented with Sesamum indicum seed oil was investigated. Twenty four rats weighing between 120-130 g were randomly assigned into four groups. Group A was fed normal diet, Group B, C and D were fed hypercholesterolemic diet （i.e. 20% fat ＋ 1% cholesterol） for two weeks to establish hypercholesterolemia. Group B were maintained on hyper diet while C and D were fed 5% and 10% benniseed oil supplemented diet for four weeks. Plasma was collected and analyzed for TC （total cholesterol）, HDL-C （high density lipoprotein）, LDL-C （low density lipoprotein） and TG （triglycerides） levels. Linoleic acid （42.44%） and oleic acid （40.60%） were the major unsaturated fatty acid in the oil. Significant increase （P 〈 0.05） was observed in the TC, TG, LDL and LDL/HDL ratio of the hypercholesterolemic rats compared to the normal control. Supplementation with Sesamum indicum seed oil at 5% and 10% levels resulted in significant decrease （P 〈 0.05） in TC, TG, LDL and LDL/HDL ratio, and significant increase in the HDL-C. The high level of unsaturated fatty acid in the oil may in part be responsible for the hypocholesterolemic effect of the oil.

Alterations in gait biomechanics are common during early stages of Parkinson’s disease (PD), potentially elevating energy requirements of walking and leading to impaired economy of gait. Although gait economy is traditionally assessed during treadmill walking with simultaneous ox-ygen consumption (VO2) monitoring, treadmill gait mechanics, particularly in PD, may be different from over-ground walking mechanics, possibly providing a distorted picture of true gait economy. Currently, no studies have directly examined the energy cost of over-ground walking in PD patients. The purpose of this study was to test the feasibility of measuring energy expenditure during over-ground walking in mild to moderate PD using portable gas exchange monitoring technology. Additionally, we sought to determine whether energy expenditure, as assessed through VO2 measures, related to disease severity for PD. Seventeen PD patients underwent separate 6-minute walk (6mW) tests both with and without the COSmED K4b2 portable oxygen monitoring system. Gait economy was calculated as measured VO2 during 6mW divided by the predicted VO2 for non-PD age-matched subjects, according to a standard estimation equation utilizing ground speed. Distance covered during the 6mW with the portable system (420 ± 12 meters) was highly correlated (r = 0.96, p 2 peak for normal floor walking, and show impaired gait economy relative to prediction equations. Interestingly, the degree of elevated energy expenditure during gait did not relate to disease severity.

Background:Large numbers of post-deployment *** are diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder(PTSD)and/or traumatic brain injury(TBI),leading to an urgent need for effective interventions to reduce symptoms and increase veterans’*** includes anxiety,flashbacks,and emotional *** symptoms increase health care costs for stress-related illnesses and can make veterans’civilian life ***:We used a randomized wait-list controlled design with repeated measures of *** veterans to address our specific aim to test the efficacy of a 6-week therapeutic horseback riding(THR)program for decreasing PTSD symptoms and increasing coping self-efficacy,emotion regulation,social and emotional *** participants were recruited and 29 enrolled in the randomized *** were randomly assigned to either the horse riding group(n=15)or a wait-list control group(n=14).The wait-list control group experienced a 6-week waiting period,while the horse riding group began *** wait-list control group began riding after 6 weeks of participating in the control *** and health history information was obtained from all the *** symptoms were measured using the standardized PTSD Checklist-military Version(PCL-m).The PCL-m as well as other instruments including,The Coping Self Efficacy Scale(CSES),The Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale(DERS)and The Social and Emotional Loneliness Scale for Adults-short version(SELSA)were used to access different aspects of individual well-being and the PTSD ***:Participants had a statistically significant decrease in PTSD scores after 3 weeks of THR(P≤0.01)as well as a statistically and clinically significant decrease after 6 weeks of THR(P≤0.01).Logistic regression showed that participants had a 66.7%likelihood of having lower PTSD scores at 3 weeks and 87.5%likelihood at 6 *** the generalized linear model(GLm),our ANOVA findings for the coping self

Family stability as a moderator of the relationship between family life changes and sleep behavior

The aim of the study was to evaluate the associations between aspects of family stability and sleep behavior and quality as indicators of health and well-being. Participants were 312 (166 female and 146 male) undergraduate students, ranging in age from 17 to 29 (m = 19.10). Participants’ global and molecular family stability in their families of origin was assessed using the Family Life Changes Survey (FLCS) and the Stability of Activities in the Family Environment (SAFE-R), respectively. Current sleep habits and quality were measured using a modified version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Inventory (PSQI). Analyses suggest family stability is related to aspects of sleep. Furthermore, it appears molecular family stability moderates the relationship between family life changes, an aspect of global family stability, and subjective sleep quality in college students. Results are important in that they suggest high levels of molecular family stability may buffer against the impact of family life changes on subjective sleep quality.

The abundance of predatory phytoseiid mites,Typhlodromus pyri,important biological control agents of spider mite pests in numerous crops,is positively influenced by the density of leaf trichomes and tuft-form domatia in vein *** of the genetic regions controlling both trophic levels could facilitate the improvement of predatory mite habitat in breeding *** abundance of *** and non-glandular trichomes was measured in a segregating F1 family derived from the cross of the complex Vitis hybrid,‘Horizon’,with Illinois 547-1(*** B38×*** B9),finding positive correlation among *** density genetic maps were used to localize one major quantitative trait locus(QTL)on chromosome 1 of Illinois 547-1 associated with both predatory mite abundance and leaf *** QTL explained 23%of the variation in phytoseiid abundance and similar amounts of variance in domatia rating(21%),domatia size(16%),leaf bristle density(37%in veins and 33%in blades),and leaf hair density(20%in veins and 15%in blades).Another nine QTL distributed among chromosomes 1,2,5,8,and 15 were associated solely with trichome density,and explained 7–17%of the phenotypic ***,our results provide evidence of the genetic architecture of non-glandular trichomes in Vitis,with a major locus influencing trichome densities,domatia size and predatory mite *** information is relevant for breeding grapevines with a more favorable habitat for biological control agents.
