The vitality of European forests continues to decline due to new pests and diseases,climate-change related disturbances and high loads of atmospheric nitrogen *** soil health is a major factor underpinning the low vitality of West-European *** tree species with soil ameliorative traits is proposed as an avenue to counteract soil acidification and improve overall forest *** we evaluate the impact of black cherry(Prunus serotina Ehrh.),a known rich litter species,on the vitality of neighboring pedunculate oak(Quercus robur L.)in ten mixed forests on sand in Germany,Belgium and the *** found that black cherry admixture increases foliar N and P to a surplus whereas it causes deficiencies in foliar Mg,thereby resulting in an overall negative effect on oak foliar nutrient ***,defoliation of oak leaves by herbivory decreases with the proximity of black *** structural equation modelling(SEM),we tested the hypothesized‘improved soil health’*** analyses showed that black cherry admixture leads to lower accumulation in the humus layer,resulting in higher soil base saturation which has a positive effect on foliar Ca yet a negative effect on total ***,the SEM illustrated that herbivory of oak leaves decreases when black cherry is admixed,both via dilution and improved soil *** effects of black cherry on oak vitality via“improved soil health”in our SEM are however small in comparison to direct ***,our study showed that the combined positive and negative impacts of black cherry on oak vitality are limited,which tempers the potential benefits of using the rich litter species to counteract oak decline via improved soil health–yet,the concern of black cherry as an invasive alien species negatively affecting the vitality of mature pedunculate oak trees may also be exaggerated.

Computed tomography of Crohn's disease:The role of three dimensional technique

Crohn's disease,a transmural inflammatory bowel disease,remains a difficult entity to diagnose *** the last decade,multidetector computed tomography(CT) has become the method of choice for noninvasive evaluation of the small bowel,and has proved to be of significant value in the diagnosis of Crohn's *** in CT enterography protocol design,three dimensional(3-d) post-processing software,and CT scanner technology have allowed increasing accuracy in diagnosis,and the acquisition of studies at a much lower radiation *** cases in this review will illustrate that the use of 3-d technique,proper enterography protocol design,and a detailed understanding of the different manifestations of Crohn's disease are all critical in properly diagnosing the full range of possible complications in Crohn's *** particular,CT enterography has proven to be effective in identifying involvement of the small and large bowel(including active inflammation,stigmata of chronic inflammation,and Crohn's-related bowel neoplasia) by Crohn's disease,as well as the extra-enteric manifestations of the disease,including fistulae,sinus tracts,abscesses,and urologic/hepatobiliary/osseous ***,the proper use of 3-d technique(including volume rendering and maximum intensity projection) as a routine component of enterography interpretation can play a vital role in improving diagnostic accuracy.

膝关节纤维化是术后常见的并发症,为影响手术疗效的关键因素之一,常引起关节活动度降低、慢性关节痛、软骨损伤以及关节废用性病变,严重降低了患者的生活质量。因此,如何降低术后膝关节纤维化的发生是提高手术预期疗效的关键,也是临床医学上需要亟待解决的重要问题。笔者团队结合自身前期及最新的研究发现,膝关节纤维化的程度与手术范围大小有重要的关联,利用微创和关节镜方法治疗膝关节三室内的疾病可有效减少滑膜、软骨和脂肪垫组织的损伤,同时结合术后早期康复训练是未来预防术后膝关节纤维化的有效手段。

Over-ground walking in Parkinson’s disease: A pilot study utilizing a portable metabolic analyzer

Alterations in gait biomechanics are common during early stages of Parkinson’s disease (Pd), potentially elevating energy requirements of walking and leading to impaired economy of gait. Although gait economy is traditionally assessed during treadmill walking with simultaneous ox-ygen consumption (VO2) monitoring, treadmill gait mechanics, particularly in Pd, may be different from over-ground walking mechanics, possibly providing a distorted picture of true gait economy. Currently, no studies have directly examined the energy cost of over-ground walking in Pd patients. The purpose of this study was to test the feasibility of measuring energy expenditure during over-ground walking in mild to moderate Pd using portable gas exchange monitoring technology. Additionally, we sought to determine whether energy expenditure, as assessed through VO2 measures, related to disease severity for Pd. Seventeen Pd patients underwent separate 6-minute walk (6MW) tests both with and without the COSMEd K4b2 portable oxygen monitoring system. Gait economy was calculated as measured VO2 during 6MW divided by the predicted VO2 for non-Pd age-matched subjects, according to a standard estimation equation utilizing ground speed. distance covered during the 6MW with the portable system (420 ± 12 meters) was highly correlated (r = 0.96, p 2 peak for normal floor walking, and show impaired gait economy relative to prediction equations. Interestingly, the degree of elevated energy expenditure during gait did not relate to disease severity.

NOd-like receptors mediated activation of eosinophils interacting with bronchial epithelial cells： a link between innate immunity and allergic asthma

Key intracytosolic pattern recognition receptors of innate immunity against bacterial infections are nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain （NOd）-Iike receptors （NLRs）. We elucidated the NOd1 and NOd2-mediated activation of human eosinophils, the principal effector cells for allergic inflammation, upon interacting with human bronchial epithelial BEAS-2B cells in allergic asthma. Eosinophils constitutively expressed NOd1,2 but exhibited nonsignificant responses to release chemokines upon the stimulation by NOd1 ligand 7-d-glutamyl-meso-diaminopimelic acid （iE-dAP） and NOd2 ligand muramyl dipeptide （MdP）. However, iE-dAP and MdP could significantly upregulate cell surface expression of Cd18 and intercellular adhesion molecule （ICAM）-I on eosinophils and ICAM-1 on BEAS-2B cells, as well as induce chemokines CCL2 and CXCL8 release in the coculture system （all P〈0.05）. Both eosinophils and BEAS-2B cells were the main source for CXCL8 and CCL2 release in the coculture system upon iE-dAP or MdP stimulation. direct interaction between eosinophils and BEAS-2B cells is responsible for CCL2 release, and soluble mediators are implicated in CXCL8 release. ERK and NF-KB play regulatory roles for the expression of adhesion molecules and chemokines in coculture. Treatment with NOd1,2 ligand could induce the subepithelial fibrosis and significantly enhance the serum concentration of total IgE, chemokine CCL5 for eosinophils and T helper type 2 （Th2） cells and asthma Th2 cytokine IL-13 in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of ovalbumin-sensitized allergic asthmatic mice （all P〈0.05）. This study provides further evidence of bacterial infection-mediated activation of NOd1,2 in triggering allergic asthma via the activation of eosinophils interacting with bronchial epithelial cells at inflammatory airway.

Background Manual segmentation of thymoma is an onerous,labor-intensive,and subjective task for ***,the development of an automatic and efficient method for thymoma segmentation can be valuable for the early detection and diagnosis of this *** Three hundred and ten subjects were enrolled in this retrospective study and all underwent CECT *** the scans were manually labeled by four experienced *** successful application of convolution neural networks(CNNs)and Transformer in computer vision led us to propose a hybrid CNN–Transformer architecture,named transformer attention Net(TA-Net),that would allow the utilization of both local information from CNN features and the global information encoded by Transformers.U-Net was used as the basic structure and Transformers were inserted into convolution blocks in the *** addition,attention gates were embedded in skip connections to highlight salient *** of the accuracy,intersection over Union(IoU),dice score,and Boundary F1 contour matching score(BFScore)between the predicted segmentation and the manual labels were utilized to evaluate segmentation *** For thymoma segmentation using TA-Net,the accuracy,dice score,IoU,and BFScore were 92.49%,89.92%,83.80%,and 0.8945,respectively,and no significant differences were detected among tumor types and enhanced *** proposed method achieved the best performance when compared with state-of-the-art *** The proposed method,which combines CNNs with Transformer,achives outstanding performance in thymoma segmentation compared with previous ***-Net may provide consistent and reproducible delineation,thereby assisting radiologists in clinical applications.
