Porcine Placenta Extract Reduced Wrinkle Formation by Potentiating Epidermal Hydration

Background: Placenta extract is used as an alternative medicine especially in Asian countries as it is a rich reservoir of diverse bioactive molecules. The effects of placenta extract on skin conditions have been previously reported, however, the mechanism underlying for reduced wrinkle formation remains unclear. Objective: The primary objective of this study was to determine whether the continuous application of porcine placenta extract (PPE) alleviates wrinkle formation in humans and explore the underlying mechanism. Methods: Wrinkle formation, skin hydration, and skin elasticity were measured in 15 volunteers at weeks 0 and 6 after continuous application of a gel containing PPE. The production of type I collagen and hyaluronic acid from fibroblasts and keratinocytes, respectively, were measured using ELISA. Expression levels of ceramide synthase 3 (CERS3), filaggrin (FLG), transglutaminase 1 (TGM1), and kallikrein-7 (KLK7) were evaluated by quantitative real-time PCR. Results: The wrinkle index was significantly reduced to 72.1% after a 6-week of applying the PPE gel, along with a significant increase in skin hydration to 126.5%. Type I collagen production from fibroblasts was enhanced slightly but significantly following treatment with PPE. PPE accelerated the expression of CERS3 (1.85-fold), FLG (1.35-fold), TGM1 (1.76-fold), and KLK7 (1.62-fold). Conclusion: Treatment with PPE alleviates wrinkle formation and simultaneously enhances skin hydration, which is induced via the accelerated expression of moisturizing-related proteins. These findings suggest that PPE is effective for combating dryness-induced wrinkle formation.

In order to elucidate whether Hollow Cathode Arc (HCA) can be used for a welding heat source in space, the investigations into fundamental characteristics of the HCA have been experimentally performed under low pressure conditions. The HCA method enables an arc discharge to ignite and maintain under low pressure conditions, where it is extremely difficult for the conventional GTA method to form an arc *** the previous paper, it has been shown that the melting process by the HCA is very sensitive to process parameters, such as gas flowrate and arc length, and a huge penetration has been formed under the condition that the arc length is long and the gas flowrate is *** the present paper, the current distribution on anode surface and plasma property of the HCA under low pressure conditions has been made clear and the total heat energy to the anode has been discussed to understand the melting property of HCA welding. Result shows that HCA in the case of low gas flowrate is a high energy source and the high-energy input to the anode contributes to the huge penetration.

Phosphorus Adsorption and Nitric Acid Reduction by Ferrous Sulfate-Treated Foamed Waste Glass

Wastewaters containing phosphorus and nitric acid are produced during biological treatment processes. In this study, a material for treating such wastewaters was developed. Foamed glass was produced from waste glass and then heated with iron sulfate to prepare an adsorbent for phosphorus and carrier for reducing nitric acid. The adsorbent performance was evaluated in batch and continuous experiments. The saturated adsorption amount of phosphate was 6.23 mg/g for the product obtained from glass of size 3 to 12 mm;the amount adsorbed was relatively high, in spite of the large glass size. The denitrification by reduction of nitrate was around 25%.

MR Differentiation of Endometriomas Complicated with and without Malignancy: Comparison with Pathological Findings

Introduction: The purposes were to clarify the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of malignant ovarian lesions arising from endometriomas, and to compare the lesions’ histopathology and MRI characteristics. Materials and Methods: Between May 2004 and December 2012, 140 patients, all of whom were diagnosed as having an endometrioma by using MR imaging, underwent surgery. We compared the MR characteristics including size and signal intensity of the tumor and mural nodules, the thickness of the septum, and the thickness of the wall with the pathological diagnoses. The attached angles of the mural nodules to the cyst wall were also evaluated. Results: Among the 179 lesions, preoperative MR imaging diagnosed 153 benign and 26 malignant. Based on the pathological results, 169 were diagnosed as benign and 10 were diagnosed as malignant. Finally, preoperative MR imaging correctly diagnosed 152 benign (group 1) and nine malignant (group 2), misdiagnosed 17 benign as malignant (group 3) and misdiagnosed one malignant as benign (group 4). As for mural nodules, there was a significant difference between groups 1 and 2 in the mean maximum diameter of the mural nodules. An acute attached angle was shown in 1 of 7 in group 1, in 11 of 16 in group 2, and in 14 of 22 in group 3. We also compared benign group with malignant group on the final pathological findings. As for mural nodules, there was a significant difference between groups 1 + 3 and group 2 in the mean maximum diameter of the mural nodules. On dynamic study, there were 22 enhanced mural nodules (75.9%) on group 1 + 3. Conclusion: Most of endometriomas preoperatively diagnosed as benign were pathological benign lesions. Endometriomas that contain many enhanced mural nodules with papillary shape, larger size, showing hypointense on T1WI, hyperintense on T2WI and showing an acute attached angle may have malignant potential.

BACKGROUND Although clinical use of sofosbuvir plus ribavirin has been approved for patients infected with genotype 2 hepatitis C virus,patients≥75-years-old have not been included in previous clinical *** To evaluate the real-world safety and efficacy of sofosbuvir plus ribavirin for elderly patients(≥75-years-old)compared to nonelderly patients,we conducted a post-marketing prospective cohort *** We treated 265 patients with genotype 2 hepatitis C virus using standard approved doses of sofosbuvir(400 mg/d)plus ribavirin adjusted by body weight,administered orally for 12 *** Sustained virological response rates for the overall cohort,patients<65-years-old,≥65-years-old but<75-years-old,and≥75-years-old were 97%(258/265),98%(93/95),97%(84/87),and 98%(81/83),respectively(P=0.842).Logistic regression analyses identified history of hepatocellular carcinoma treatment and alpha-fetoprotein as factors significantly associated with sustained virological ***-fetoprotein was the only independent factor *** virological response rate was significantly lower for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma treatment(91%)than for patients without history of hepatocellular carcinoma treatment(98%,P=0.004).One patient(0.4%)discontinued treatment due to drug-induced *** reduction or interruption of ribavirin was required for 12.1%(32/265)of patients because of anemia,including 7.7%(14/182)of patients<75-years-old and 21.7%(18/83)of patients≥75-years-old(P=0.002).CONCLUSION Although ribavirin dose reduction or interruption was required with advanced age,sofosbuvir plus ribavirin appears tolerable and highly effective even in patients≥75-years-old.

Effects of the Hand Care Therapy that Used Natural Herb Oil on Autonomic Nervous System against All People Concerned

Multi-sensory stimulation is beneficial to a wide variety of conditions typical of geriatric patients. Some therapies for elderly people are based on the philosophy that the activities to be carried out will also be stimulating to the senses. On the other hand, the dynamics of the senses plays an important role beyond mere reason and sensibility in people’s lives. The hand care therapy that used natural herb oil is the alternative medicine that utilized a plant or its essential oil, which is used in various application scenes. In our past study, the hand care therapy that used natural herb oil demonstrated the effectiveness for elderly people. In this study, we examined influences on psychological condition of the side to treatment on. On the evaluation with question paper, baseline of POMS factor and TMD average were similar to pre-HCT. In post-HCT, T-A, A-H, F and C which were negative factors decreased than pre significantly. The forward factor V did not have significant difference, but the mean increased. Furthermore, the TMD (total mood distance) score generally decreased and changed in the balance of good feelings. On the objective evaluation, temporal change differences in the PNS (Parasympathetic Nervous System) during the relaxed state and following the induced stress state were monitored using ECG (electrocardiograph). The SNS (Sympathetic Nervous System) of students in HCT has decreased, and the PNS was confirmed to increase. For the tendency in SNS, the changes during the HCT were small. Background: Depressive symptoms and anxiety symptoms during the postpartum period affect physical health and child rearing and that these effects are important social issues. Objective: The aims of this study were to clarify the differences in the transition of depressive symptoms and anxiety symptoms according to parity during a 6-month postpartum period and to clarify the differences in associations of depressive symptoms and anxiety symptoms with feelings for involvement with newborn infants in primiparous and multiparous postpartum women. Methods: The design of this study was a longitudinal investigation. This study was conducted from February 2017 to July 2018 in Japan. By using self-administered questionnaires that included questions on psychological symptoms in a standard climacteric scale and questions on feelings for involvement with newborn infants, we collected data at 3 days postpartum, 2 weeks postpartum, one month postpartum, 3 months postpartum and 6 months postpartum. Results: Responses to all of the questionnaires were obtained from 121 (52.8%) of 229 women. The score for depressive symptoms in primiparous women was significantly higher than that in multiparous women at 3 days postpartum. Depressive symptoms and anxiety symptoms showed peaks at 2 weeks postpartum in both primiparous women and multiparous women, but depressive symptoms reoccurred from 3 months postpartum to 6 months postpartum in primiparous women and anxiety symptoms reoccurred from one month to 3 months postpartum in multiparous women.
