To examine the effects of Populus tomentiglandulosa(PT) extract on the expressions of antioxidant enzymes and neurotrophic factors in the cornu ammonis 1(CA1) region of the hippocampus at 5 min after inducing transient global cerebral ischemia(TGCI) in gerbils, TGCI was induced by occlusion of common carotid arteries for 5 min. Before ischemic surgery, 200 mg·kg–1 PT extract was orally administrated once daily for 7 d. We performed neuronal nuclear antigen immunohistochemistry and Fluoro-Jade B staining. Furthermore, we determined in situ production of superoxide anion radical, expression levels of SOD1 and SOD2 as antioxidant enzymes and brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF) and insulin-like growth factor I(IGF-I) as neurotrophic factors. Pretreatment with 200 mg·kg–1 PT extract prevented neuronal death(loss). Furthermore, pretreatment with 200 mg·kg–1 PT extract significantly inhibited the production of superoxide anion radical, increased expressions of SODs and maintained expressions of BDNF and IGF-I. Such increased expressions of SODs were maintained in the neurons after IRI. In summary, pretreated PT extract can significantly increase levels of SODs and protect the neurons against TGCI, suggesting that PT can be a useful natural agent to protect against TGCI.

Facile solution-processed molybdenum oxide as hole transporting material for efficient organic solar cell

The large energy barrier in hole extraction still remains a great challenge in developing hole transporting layer (HTL) materials for organic solar cells (OSCs).Thus,solution-processed HTL materials with excellent hole collection ability and good compatibility with large-area processing technique are strongly desired for ***,we developed a cost-effective and solution-processed moo_(3)HTL for efficient *** adding a small amount of glucose as reducing reagent into the ammonium molybdate precursor solution,a deeply n-doped moo_(3),namely G:Mo,was prepared through the sol–gel *** to pristine moo_(3),the conductivity of G:Mo was enhanced by two orders of magnitude,which greatly improved the hole collection ability of the *** with G:Mo can exhibit comparable PCE to the PEDOT:PSS *** PBDB-TF:BTP-eC9 as the active layer,a PCE of 17.1%is obtained for the device,which is the highest PCE value for OSC using a solution-processed moo_(3)*** importantly,G:Mo is well compatible with the blade-coating *** OSC using a blade-coated G:Mo showed almost no PCE loss as compared to the device with spin-coated G:Mo *** results from this work indicate that G:Mo is a promising HTL material for the practical production of OSCs.

Low survival rate occurs in patients who initially experience a spontaneous return of circulation after cardiac arrest（CA）. In this study, we induced asphyxial CA in adult male Sprague-Daley rats, maintained their body temperature at 37 ± 0.5°C, and then observed the survival rate during the post-resuscitation phase. We examined neuronal damage in the hippocampus using cresyl violet（CV） and Fluore-Jade B（F-J B） staining, and pro-inflammatory response using ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1（Iba-1）, glial fibrillary acidic protein（GFAP）, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha（TNF-α） immunohistochemistry in the hippocampus after asphyxial CA in rats under normothermia. Our results show that the survival rate decreased gradually post-CA（about 63% at 6 hours, 37% at 1 day, and 8% at 2 days post-CA）. Rats were sacrificed at these points in time post-CA, and no neuronal damage was found in the hippocampus until 1 day post-CA. However, some neurons in the stratum pyramidale of the CA region in the hippocampus were dead 2 days post-CA. Iba-1 immunoreactive microglia in the CA1 region did not change until 1 day postCA, and they were activated（enlarged cell bodies with short and thicken processes） in all layers 2 days postCA. Meanwhile, GFAP-immunoreactive astrocytes did not change significantly until 2 days post-CA. TNF-α immunoreactivity decreased significantly in neurons of the stratum pyramidale in the CA1 region 6 hours post-CA, decreased gradually until 1 day post-CA, and increased significantly again 2 days post-CA. These findings suggest that low survival rate of normothermic rats in the early period of asphyxia-induced CA is related to increased TNF-α immunoreactivity, but not to neuronal damage in the hippocampal CA1 region.

Risk factors for tuberculosis after gastrectomy in gastric cancer

AIM: To examine incidence of tuberculosis(TB) in gastrectomy patients and investigate the risk factors for developing TB after gastrectomy in patients with gastric ***: A retrospective cohort study of gastrectomy patients with gastric cancer was performed at a university-affiliated hospital in Seoul, South Korea between January 2007 and December 2009. We reviewed patient medical records and collected data associated with the risk of TB, surgery, and gastric cancer. Standardized incidence ratios(SIRs) of TB were calculated to compare the incidence of TB in gastrectomy patients with that in the general Korean population, and risk factors for TB after gastrectomies were ***: Among the 1776 gastrectomy patients, 0.9%(16/1776) developed post-gastrectomy TB, with an incidence of 223.7 cases per 100000 patients per year. The overall incidence of TB in gastrectomy patients, adjusted by sex and age, was significantly higher thanthat in the general population(SIR = 2.22, 95%CI: 1.27-3.60). Previous TB infection [odds ratio(OR) = 7.1, P < 0.001], lower body mass index(BMI)(kg/m2; OR = 1.21, P = 0.043) and gastrectomy extent(total gastrectomy vs subtotal gastrectomy)(OR = 3.48, P = 0.017) were significant risk factors for TB after gastrectomy in a multivariate ***: TB incidence after gastrectomy is higher than that in the general population. Previous TB infection, lower BMI, and total gastrectomy are risk factors for TB after gastrectomy in patients with gastric cancer.

Differential diagnosis of left-sided abdominal pain:Primary epiploic appendagitis vs colonic diverticulitis

AIM:To investigate the clinical characteristics of left primary epiploic appendagitis and to compare them with those of left colonic ***:We retrospectively reviewed the clinical records and radiologic images of the patients who presented with left-sided acute abdominal pain and had computer tomography(CT) performed at the time of presentation showing radiological signs of left primary epiploic appendagitis(PEA) or left acute colonic diverticulitis(ACD) between January 2001 and December 2011. A total of 53 consecutive patients were enrolled and evaluated. We also compared the clinical characteristics,laboratory findings,treatments,and clinical results of left PEA with those of left ***:Twenty-eight patients and twenty-five patients were diagnosed with symptomatic left PEA and ACD,respectively. The patients with left PEA had focal abdominal tenderness on the left lower quadrant(82.1%). On CT examination,most(89.3%) of the patients with left PEA were found to have an oval fatty mass with a hyperattenuated ring sign. In cases of left ACD,the patients presented with a more diffuse abdominal tenderness throughout the left side(52.0%vs 14.3%; P = 0.003). The patients with left ACD had fever and rebound tenderness more often than those with left PEA(40.0% vs 7.1%,P = 0.004; 52.0% vs14.3%,P = 0.003,respectively). Laboratory abnormalities such as leukocytosis were also more frequently observed in left ACD(52.0% vs 15.4%,P = 0.006).CONCLUSION:If patients have left-sided localized abdominal pain without associated symptoms or laboratory abnormalities,clinicians should suspect the diagnosis of PEA and consider a CT scan.

Recoverable SnO_2-Based Sensors Promoted with moo_3 and Sb_2O_3 for the Detection of DMMP

The sensitivity and the recovery behavior of SnO_2-based gas sensor prepared from a commercial SnO_2 powder were tested under the low concentration of DMMP(0.5μg/g) in the flow system at 350℃.In order to improve the sensitivity of the sensor,promoters such as NiO,Nb_2O_5,moo_3,and Sb_2O_3 were added into SnO_2 *** sensitivities were increased up to 80% from 50% but they were not *** the SnO2-based gas sensor promoted with moo_3 and Sb_2O_3 was recovered after detection of DMMP,although the recovery rate was *** particular,the SnO_2-based sensor promoted with 5wt% of moo_3 and 1wt% of Sb_2O_3 simultaneously showed an complete recovery ability,though its sensitivity was 40% which was lower than that of SnO_2 gas sensor without *** ability was discussed in terms of catalytic roles of promoters.
