The circulation in the southern Huanghai Sea and northern East China Sea in June 1999

On the basis of hydrographic data and current measurement (the mooring system, vessel-mounted ADCP and toward ADCP) data obtained in June 1999, the circulations in the southern Huanghai Sea (HS) and northern East China Sea (ECS) are computed by using the modified inverse method. The Kuroshio flows northeastward through eastern part of the investigated region and has the main core at Section PN, a northward flow at the easternmost part of Section PN, a weaker anti-cyclonic eddy between these two northward flows, and a weak cyclonic eddy at the western part of Section PN. The above current structure is one type of the current structures at Section PN in ECS. The net northward volume transport (VT) of the Kuroshio and the offshore branch of Taiwan Warm Current (TWCOB) through Section PN is about 26.2 x 10(6) m(3)/s in June 1999. The VT of the inshore branch of Taiwan Warm Current (TWCIB) through the investigated region is about 0.4 x 10(6) m(3)/s. The Taiwan Warm Current (TWC) has much effect on the currents over the continental shelf. The Huanghai Sea Coastal Current (HSCC) flows southeastward and enters into the northwestern part of investigated region, and flows to turn cyclonically, and then it flows northeastward, due to the influences of the Taiwan Warm Current and topography. There is a cyclonic eddy south of Cheju Island where the Huanghai Sea Coastal Current flows to turn cyclonically. It has the feature of high dense and cold water. The uniform and cold water is occurred in the layer from about 30 m level to the bottom between Stations C306 and C311 at the northernmost Section C3. It is a southern part of the Huanghai Sea Cold Water mass (HSCWm).

Features of Rotating Stall Cell in a Diagonal Flow Fan (in Case of mid-loading Rotor)

The structure and behavior of rotating stall cell were experimentally clarified in a diagonal flow fan. The specific-speed of the fan was 1140 （r/min, m^3/min, m）, and the total pressure-rise coefficient at design flow-rate was 0.345. The static pressure on outer casing wall and the total pressure at rotor inlet and outlet were measured using a high response pressure transducer. The measured data were processed by the use of DPLA technique, and the structure and behavior of rotating stall cell were obtained. As a result, the stall cell extent for circumferential and spanwise direction and the pressure distributions inside stall cell were clarified. The details of stall cell propagation were also shown.

High Power Neutral Beam Injection in LHD

The results on high power injection with the ueutral bean, injection （NBI） system for the Large Helical Device （LHD） are reported. The system consists of three beam-lines with two hydrogen negative ion （H^- ion） sources installed in each beam-line. In order to improve the injection power, a new beam accelerator with a multi-slot grounded grid （mSGG） has been developed and applied to one beam-line. Using the accelerator, a maximum power of 5.7 mW was achieved in 2003 and 2004, and the maximum energy of 189 keV was reached. The power and energy exceeded the design values of the individual beam-line for LHD. The other beam-lines also increased their injection power up to about 4 mW, and the total injection power of 13.1 mW was achieved with three beam-llnes in 2003. Although the accelerator had an advantage in high power beam injection, extracted beams expand in the short side direction of the ground-grid slot. The disadvantage has been resolved by modifying the aperture shapes of the steering grid.

New acoustic system for continuous measurement of river discharge and water temperature

In many cases, river discharge is indirectly estimated from water level or streamflow velocity near the water surface. However, these methods have limited applicability. In this study, an innovative system, the fluvial acoustic tomography system （FATS）, was used for continuous discharge measurement. Transducers with a central frequency of 30 kHz were installed diagonally across the river. The system＇s significant functions include accurate measurement of the travel time of the transmission signal using a GPS clock and the attainment of a high signal-to-noise ratio as a result of modulation of the signal by the 10th order m-sequence. In addition, FATS is small and lightweight, and its power consumption is low. Operating in unsteady streamflow, FATS successfully measured the cross-sectional average velocity. The agreement between FATS and acoustic Doppler current profilers （ADCPs） on water discharge was satisfactory. moreover, the temporal variation of the cross-sectional average temperature deduced from the sound speed of FATS was similar to that measured by a temperature sensor near the bank.

Analysis of internal tidal characteristics in the layer above 450 m from acoustic Doppler current profiler observations in the Luzon Strait

The characteristics of internal tides in the upper layer of the Luzon Strait are investigated on the basis of direct-observation current data recorded on April 25 and September 26, 2008 by an acoustic Doppler current profiler. Spectral analysis and energy estimation show that the diurnals and semidiurnals carry most of the energy of internal tides. Values of the depth-integrated total energy E for the three frequency bands of diurnal, semidiurnal, and high frequencies are 31, 6.9, and 3.4 kJ. m, respectively. Near-inertial peaks are only present in the baroclinic component. The behavior of typical tidal frequencies （i.e., O1, K1, m2, mK3, and m4） and the near-inertial frequency is basically consistent with linear internal wave theory, which predicts E＋（ω）/E_（ω）=（ω-f）2/（ω＋f）2 at depths above 66 m, while not all prominent tidal components coincide well with the relation of the linear internal wave field at other depths. Examinations of depth structures of the baroclinic tides and temporal variations show that the surface tides and internal tides are both of mixed type, having diurnal inequality and spring-neap fortnight periods. The K1 and O1 tides have comparable cross- and along-shelf components, while the m2 and S2 tides propagate toward the shelf in the northern South China Sea as wave beams. The amplitude and phase of internal tides vary with time, but m2 and S2 tides appear to have structures dominated by the first mode, while the K1 and O1 tides resemble second-mode structures. The minor to major axis ratios are close to expected values of flω in the thermocline.

T1ρ/T2 mapping and histopathology of degenerative cartilage in advanced knee osteoarthritis

AIm To investigate whether normal thickness cartilage in osteoarthritic knees demonstrate depletion of proteoglycan or collagen content compared to healthy *** magnetic resonance(mR) images were acquired from5 subjects scheduled for total knee arthroplasty(TKA)(mean age 70 years) and 20 young healthy control subjects without knee pain(mean age 28.9 years). mR images of T1ρ mapping, T2 mapping, and fat suppressed proton-density weighted sequences were *** TKA each condyle was divided into 4 parts(distal medial, posterior medial, distal lateral, posterior lateral) for cartilage analysis. Twenty specimens(bone and cartilage blocks) were examined. For each joint,the degree and extent of cartilage destruction was determined using the Osteoarthritis Research Society International cartilage histopathology assessment *** magnetic resonance imaging(mRI) analysis, 2 readers performed cartilage segmentation for T1ρ/T2 values and cartilage thickness *** Eleven areas in mRI including normal or near normal cartilage thickness were selected. The corresponding histopathological sections demonstrated mild to moderate osteoarthritis(OA). There was no significant difference in cartilage thickness in mRI between control and advanced OA samples [medial distal condyle, P = 0.461;medial posterior condyle(mPC), P = 0.352; lateral distal condyle, P = 0.654; lateral posterior condyle, P = 0.550],suggesting arthritic specimens were morphologically similar to normal or early staged degenerative *** T2 and T1ρ values from the mPC were significantly higher among the patients with advanced OA(P= 0.043). For remaining condylar samples there was no statistical difference in T2 and T1ρ values between cases and controls but there was a trend towards higher values in advanced OA patients. Clinical significance of type V_I pit pattern subclassification in determining the depth of invasion of colorectal neoplasms

AIm: To clarify whether subclassification of the type VI pit pattern on the basis of magnifying colonoscopy findings is useful in determining the type and depth of invasion of colorectal ***: We retrospectively analyzed 272 colorectal neoplasms (117 dysplasias and 155 submucosal invasive carcinomas; 228 patients) with a type V pit pattern [type VI, n = 202; type VN, n = 70 (Kudo and Tsuruta classification system)]. We divided lesions with a type VI pit pattern into two subclasses, mildly irregular lesions and severely irregular lesions, according to the prominent and detailed magnifying colonoscopy findings. We examined the relation between these two subclasses and histology/invasion ***: One hundred and four lesions (51.5%) were judged to be mildly irregular, and 98 lesions (48.5%) were judged to be severely irregular. Ninety-seven (93.3%) mildly irregular lesions showed dysplasias or submucosal invasion of less than 1000 μm (Sm m). Carnap＇s Thought on Inductive Logic

Although we often see references to Carnap＇s inductive logic even in modern literatures, seemingly its confusing style has long obstructed its correct understanding. So instead of Carnap, in this paper, I devote myself to its necessary and sufficient commentary. In the beginning part （Sections 2-5）, I explain why Carnap began the study of inductive logic and bow he related it with our thought on probability （Sections 2-4）. Therein, I trace Carnap＇s thought back to Wittgenstein＇s Tractatus as well （Section 5）. In the succeeding sections, I attempt the simplest exhibition of Carnap＇s earlier system, where his original thought was thoroughly provided. For this purpose, minor concepts to which researchers have not paid attention are highlighted, for example, m-function （Section 8）, in-correlation （Section 10）, C-correlate （Section 10）, statistical distribution （Section 12）, and fitting sequence （Section 17）. The climax of this paper is the proof of theorem （56）. Through this theorem, we will be able to overview Carnap＇s whole system.

Optical recordings reveal the differential distribution of glutamatergic transmission in the cochlear and vestibular nuclei in the newborn mouse brainstem

Objective Using optical imaging in brainstem slices, we studied evoked responses in the mouse cochlear (CN) and vestibular (VN) nuclei. methods The use of optical imaging allowed us to visualize the spatiotemporal patterns of excitatory propagation in the CN and VN. Optical recordings can differentiate excitatory propagation in the ventral CN(VCN) from that in the dorsal CN(DCN). Furthermore, we assessed the relative distribution of NmDA and non-NmDA receptors in these regions using the glutamate antagonists APV (NmDA receptor antagonist) and CNQX (non-NmDA receptor antagonist) in mouse brainstem slices during postnatal days 1 to 3. Results The average sensitivity to APV was 99.1% in the VCN, 76.0% in the DCN and 64.9% in the VN. The average sensitivity to CNQX was 0.9% in the VCN, 24.0% in the DCN and 35.1% in the VN. These results indicate that the effect of APV dominated in the VCN, while both APV and CNQX were effective antagonists in the DCN and VN. In the VN, the distribution of APV-and CNQX-sensitive cells was almost completely uniform. However, in the DCN the distribution of APV-and CNQX-sensitive cells was highly complex. The area that was more sensitive to CNQX was located in the superficial layer of the DCN while the area with a higher sensitivity to APV was located progressively in the deep layer. Conclusion This optical recording data suggests that there is a differential distribution of NmDA and non-NmDA receptor mediated neurotransmission in the VCN, DCN and VN.

A new approach to transfect NF-κB decoy oligodeoxynucleotides into the periodontal tissue using the ultrasound-microbubble method

The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of the ultrasound-microbubble technique in nuclear factor kappa B(NF-κB) decoy oligodeoxynucleotide(ODN) transfection in the gingival tissue in mice. The 6-FAm-labeled scrambled decoy ODN with microbubbles was applied to the periodontal tissue in 8-week-old male C57BL/6J mice by ultrasound radiation at low(LUm-Sc) and high(HUm-Sc) intensities to optimize the transfection condition of the ultrasound-microbubble *** inspections were performed two hours after transfection to compare the expression with that in the sham-operated group without ultrasound radiation(A-Sc). Then, an NF-κB decoy was transfected into the periodontal tissue using the highintensity ultrasound-microbubble(HUm-NF) technique to examine the anti-inflammatory effects of the decoy ODN. Western blot analysis was performed to investigate the expression of interleukin(IL)-1β, IL-6 and intercellular adhesion molecule-1(ICAm-1)in the gingival tissues in the HUm-Sc, the HUm-NF and control groups. The fluorescence microscopy results showed that the fluorescent intensity in the periodontal tissues in the LUm-Sc and HUm-Sc groups was significantly higher than that in the A-Sc and the control groups. The fluorescent intensity in the HUm-Sc group, especially in the gingival connective tissue,was the highest of all groups. Western blot analysis indicated that the protein expression levels of IL-1β, IL-6 and ICAm-1 in the HUm-NF group were significantly lower than those in the HUm-Sc and the control groups. These findings suggest that the high-intensity ultrasound-microbubble technique is an effective tool for decoy transfection into the periodontal tissue.
