Assessment of the correlation between serum prolidase and alpha-fetoprotein levels in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma

AIM: To determine the predictive value of increased prolidase activity that reflects increased collagen turnover in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).METHODS: Sixty-eight patients with HCC(mean age of 69.1 ± 10.1), 31 cirrhosis patients(mean age of59.3 ± 6.3) and 33 healthy volunteers(mean age of51.4 ± 12.6) were enrolled in this study. Univariate and multivariate analysis were used to evaluate the association of serum α-fetoprotein(AFP) values with HCC clinicopathological features, such as tumor size,number and presence of vascular and macrovascular invasion. The patients with HCC were divided into groups according to tumor size, number and presence of vascular invasion(diameters; ≤ 3 cm, 3-5 cmand ≥ 5 cm, number; 1, 2 and ≥ 3, macrovascular invasion; yes/no). Barcelona-clinic liver cancer(BCLC)criteria were used to stage HCC patients. Serum samples for measurement of prolidase and alphafetoprotein levels were kept at-80 ℃ until *** levels were measured spectrophotometrically and AFP concentrations were determined by a chemiluminescence immunometric commercial diagnostic ***: In patients with HCC, prolidase and AFP values were evaluated according to tumor size, number,presence of macrovascular invasion and BCLC staging classification. Prolidase values were significantly higher in patients with HCC compared with controls(P <0.001). Prolidase levels were significantly associated with tumor size and number(P < 0.001, P = 0.002,respectively). Prolidase levels also differed in patients in terms of BCLC staging classification(P < 0.001).Furthermore the prolidase levels in HCC patients showed a significant difference compared with patients with cirrhosis(P < 0.001). In HCC patients grouped according to tumor size, number and BCLC staging classification, AFP values differed separately(P = 0.032,P = 0.038, P = 0.015, respectively). Clitoris metastasis from a retroperitoneal leiomyosarcoma: A case report

Leiomyosarcoma is a rare form of cancer commonly found in the retroperitoneum, uterus, stomach, small intestine and vascular tissue. Surgery with a wide margin of resection is the most effective treatment. Nevertheless, metastasis is common and generally occurs within the first 3 years. The liver and lungs are the most common sites of metastasis in leiomyosarcoma. Other sites of metastasis include bone, spleen, soft tissues and brain. Metastatic tumours of the clitoris are extremely rare. As cited in the literature, the most common cancers that metastasize to the clitoris are breast, bladder, renal and gastric. Here, we report a case of a clitoral mass in a 64-year-old woman who received an operation for retroperitoneal leiomyosarcoma 4 years prior. Mass resection was performed. The pathological diagnosis was a leiomyosarcoma metastasis. The patient also presented with brain and lung metastases at the time of the clitoral metastasis. This is the first case of clitoral and brain metastases originating from a retroperitoneal leiomyosarcoma.

Van der Waals heterojunctions are fast-emerging quantum structures fabricated by the controlled stacking of two-dimensional(2D)*** to the atomically thin thickness,their carrier properties are not only determined by the host material itself,but also defined by the interlayer interactions,including dielectric environment,charge trapping centers,and stacking *** abundant constituents without the limitation of lattice constant matching enable fascinating electrical,optical,and magnetic properties in van der Waals heterojunctions toward next-generation devices in photonics,optoelectronics,and information *** review focuses on the charge and energy transfer processes and their dynamics in transition metal dichalcogenides(TMDCs),a family of quantum materials with strong excitonic effects and unique valley properties,and other related 2D materials such as graphene and hexagonalboron *** the first part,we summarize the ultrafast charge transfer processes in van der Waals heterojunctions,including its experimental evidence and theoretical understanding,the interlayer excitons at the TMDC interfaces,and the hot carrier injection at the graphene/TMDCs *** the second part,the energy transfer,including both Förster and Dexter types,are reviewed from both experimental and theoretical ***,we highlight the typical charge and energy transfer applications in photodetectors and summarize the challenges and opportunities for future development in this field.

Electricity production from brewery wastewater using dual-chamber microbial fuel cells(MFCs) with a tin-coated copper mesh in the anode was investigated by changing the hydraulic retention time(HRT). The MFCs were fed with wastewater samples from the inlet(inflow, MFC-1) and outlet(outflow, MFC-2) of an anaerobic digester of a brewery wastewater treatment plant. Both chemical oxygen demand removal and current density were improved by decreasing HRT. The best MFC performance was with an HRT of 0.5 d. The maximum power densities of 8.001 and 1.843 μW/cm2 were obtained from reactors MFC-1 and MFC-2, respectively. Microbial diversity at different conditions was studied using PCR-DGGE profiling of 16 S rR NA fragments of the microorganisms from the biofilm on the anode electrode. The MFC reactor had mainly Geobacter, Shewanella, and Clostridium species, and some bacteria were easily washed out at lower HRTs. The fouling characteristics of the MFC Nafion membrane and the resulting degradation of MFC performance were examined. The ion exchange capacity, conductivity, and diffusivity of the membrane decreased significantly after fouling. The morphology of the Nafion membrane and MFC degradation were studied using scanning electron microscopy and attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.

Investigation of the Potential of Using Liquid Rubbers in Rubber Industry

Along with the developing technology in the rubber industry, the use of natural and synthetic rubbers as well as liquid rubbers has increased significantly in recent years. The formulation of the tread compound, which directly affects the performance of a tire, is generally produced from natural and synthetic rubbers. Intensive scientific studies have been carried out on liquid rubbers because they reduce the consumption of process oils used in the tire production phase and increase dispersion. In this study, the rheological and physico-mechanical properties of rubbers developed using only liquid rubber (liquid isoprene and liquid SBR) with four different viscosities and without using process oil (Styrene Butadiene Rubber—SBR) were investigated. It has been observed that the rubber blends produced by adding four different liquid rubbers to the same recipe caused changes in rheological and physico-mechanical properties compared to the reference sample. It was observed that the minimum torque/viscosity (ML), maximum torque/viscosity (MH) and curing time (t90) in some of the formulas tested decreased significantly due to the use of liquid rubber.

Machine-to-Machine Collaboration Utilizing Internet of Things and Machine Learning

Machine-to-Machine (M2M) collaboration opens new opportunities where systems can collaborate without any human intervention and solve engineering problems efficiently and effectively. M2M is widely used for various application areas. Through this reported project authors developed a M2M system where a drone and two ground vehicles collaborate through a base station to implement a system that can be utilized for an indoor search and rescue operation. The model training for drone flight paths achieves almost 100% accuracy. It was also observed that the accuracy of the model increased with more training samples. Both the drone flight path and ground vehicle navigation are controlled from the base station. Machine learning is utilized for modelling of drone’s flight path as well as for ground vehicle navigation through obstacles. The developed system was implemented on a field trial within a corridor of a building, and it was demonstrated successfully.

Erectile function and late-onset hypogonadism symptoms related to lower urinary tract symptom severity in elderly men

The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between lower urinary tract symptoms （LUTSs）, erectile dysfunction （ED） and symptomatic late-onset hypogonadism （SLOH） in ageing men in the Aegean region of Turkey. Five hundred consecutive patients 〉40 years old who had been in a steady sexual relationship for the past 6 months and were admitted to one of six urology clinics were included in the study. Serum prostate-specific antigen and testosterone levels and urinary flow rates were measured. All patients filled out the International Prostate Symptom Score and Quality of Life （IPSS-QoL）, International Index of Erectile Function （IIEF） and Aging Males＇ Symptoms （AMS） scale forms. Of the patients, 23.9% had mild LUTSs, 53.3% had moderate LUTSs and 22.8% had severe LUTSs. The total testosterone level did not differ between groups. Additionally, 69.6% had ED. The presence of impotence increased with increasing LUTS severity. Symptomatic late-onset hypogonadism （AMS 〉27） was observed in 71.2% of the patients. The prevalence of severe hypogonadism symptoms increased with the IPSS scores. A correlation analysis revealed that all three questionnaire scores were significantly correlated. In conclusion, LUTS severity is an age-independent risk factor for ED and SLOH. LUTS severity and SLOH symptoms appear to have a strong link that requires etiological and biological clarification in future studies.
