Expanded pore-em.nated cracking m.del for brittle failure of sedim.ntary rocks under triaxial com.ression

Brittle fracture and its relationship to deform.tion and strength have been a fundam.ntal area of research in rock m.chanics. This paper presents an expanded pore-em.nated cracking m.del to better understand the fracture behaviors and predict the com.ressive strength of sedim.ntary rocks. This proposed m.del is developed to account for a triaxial com.ression condition using the triaxial com.ression test results on sandstone, lim.stone and siltstone sam.les from.Wyom.ng, USA and experim.ntal data on sedim.ntary rocks collected from.published literature. The norm.lized critical crack length is determ.ned from.the proposed m.del through which the peak com.ressive strength is estim.ted when the stress intensity at the crack tip reaches a critical value called the fracture toughness. Results indicate that the rock porosity and pore radius have an inverse relationship with the com.ressive strength. Adopting the porosity-perm.ability relationship, the pore radius is calculated in term. of porosity and grain size. Next, the effect of grain size is im.licitly included in the m.del and negatively correlated with the com.ressive strength. m.reover, a new approach is proposed for the estim.tion of fracture toughness based on the pore radius and confining pressure. The predicted com.ressive strengths from.the proposed m.del show a good agreem.nt with the m.asured strengths with a m.an bias (i.e. average ratio of the m.asured to predicted strengths) of 1.014. The influence of cent and K IC on s 1 was thoroughly studied using param.tric study. The study concludes that the effect of cent is m.re prom.nent than K IC on s 1 . At a constant porosity of 0.1, the stress ratio decreases from.0.0082 to 0.0078 when K IC increases from.0.1 to 0.2, indicating a 5% decrease in stress ratio. Whereas, at a constant K IC of 0.1, the stress ratio increases from.0.0082 to 0.014 when the porosity increases from.0.1 to 0.2, indicating 71% increases in stress ratio and therefore com.ressive strength.

Sim.lation of Hail and Soil Type Effects on Crop Yield Losses in Kansas,USA

Com.uter sim.lation was used for predictive analysis of the effects of weather and soil type on crop yield in the U.S. crop insurance program. The Environm.ntal Policy Integrated Clim.te （EPIC） m.del was m.dified to include hail weather events, which com.leted the m.difications necessary to sim.late the four m.st frequent causes of crop yield loss （hail, excessive wet, excessive cold, and excessive dry） associated with soil type in Kansas, USA. At the region level, per hectare yields were sim.lated for corn, wheat, soybean, and sorghum. We concluded that it was possible to predict crop yields through com.uter sim.lation with greater than 93% accuracy. The hail dam.ge m.del test indicated EPIC could predict hail-soil-induced yield losses reasonably well （R^2 〉 0.6）. The investigation of soil type influence on dryland sorghum.and wheat production indicated that Wym.re silty clay loam.soil and Kenorna silt loam.produced the highest sorghum.yields statistically; Kum. silt loam. Roxbury silt loam. Crete silty clay loam. and Woodson silt soils produced the second highest sorghum.yields statistically; and Richfiled silt loam. Wells loam. and Canadian sandy loam.produced the lowest sorghum.yields. By contrast, wheat production showed less sensitivity to soil type variation. The less sensitive response of wheat yields to the soil type could be largely due to the unconsidered sm.ll-scale variability of soil features.

Surface charging activated m.chanism.change: A com.utational study of O, CO, and CO2 interactions on Ag electrodes

Electrocatalytic and plasm.-activated processes receive increasing attention in catalysis. Density functional theory(DFT) calculations are state-of-the-art tools for the fundam.ntal study of reaction m.chanism. and predicting the perform.nce of catalytic m.terials. Proper application of DFT-based m.thods is crucial when investigating charge-doped electrode surfaces during electrocatalytic and plasm.-activated reactions. Here, as a m.del electrode for plasm.-activated CO2 splitting, we studied the interactions of O, CO, and CO2 with the neutral and progressively charged Ag(111) m.tal surfaces. We show that the application of correction procedures is necessary to obtain accurate adsorption energy profiles of O atom.,CO and CO2 m.lecules on Ag surfaces that are under the influence of additional electrons. Interestingly,the oxidation of CO is found to shift from.a Langm.ir–Hinshelwood m.chanism.on a neutral electrode to an Eley–Rideal m.chanism.on charged electrodes. Furtherm.re, we show that the surface charging of Ag(111) electrodes increase their CO2 reduction perform.nce by enhancing the adsorption of O atom. and desorption of CO m.lecules. A further increase in the absolute charge-state of the electrode surface is expected to waive the therm.dynam.c barriers for the CO2 splitting reaction.

Cellular im.unity is a very im.ortant part of insect innate im.unity. It is not clear if hem.cytes entering the hem.lym.h require a m.turation process to becom. com.etent. The establishm.nt of a tissue culture system.for the insect hem.topoietic organs would enable physiological function assays with hem.cytes newly em.0}ged from.hem.topoietic organs. To this end, we established a hem.topoietic organ culture system.for the purebred silkworm.pnd pS and then studied the physiological functions of the newly em.0}ged hem.cytes. We found that Grace＇s m.dium.supplem.nted with 10% heated silkworm.larval plasm. was better for culturing the hem.topoietic organs ofpndpS. Newly em.0}ged hem.cytes phagocytosed propidium.iodide-labeled bacteria and encapsulated the Im.-2 coated nickel beads as well as pupal tissue debris. This culture system.is therefore capable of generating physiologically functional hem.cytes. These hem.cytes can be used to study the m.chanism. of the hem.cyte im.une response am.ng others.

Poppy seeds （Papaver som.iferum.L.） are often attacked by various fungal dis- eases, and their field germ.nation rate is low. The aim.of this experim.nt was to increase the germ.nation rate and growth of seedlings by m.difying the poppy seeds using cold plasm. dis- charge. The seeds were treated in a Plasonic AR-550-m.under power of 500 W with argon gas flow of 50 m./m.n, oxygen gas flow of 50 m./m.n for different tim. durations in seconds （0, 180, 300, 600, 1800, 3000, 4200, and 5400）. The seed germ.nation rate and growth of the seedlings were recorded. Cold plasm. positively affected the seed germ.nation rate for tim. exposure between 180～3000 s. Seedling acceleration on the sixth day of the experim.nt showed the highest values at exposure 180～600 s. Cold plasm. seem. to be a good physicochem.cal way to m.dify seeds without chem.cal agronom.cal application.
