Who should be screened for colorectal cancer and how can it be prevented more effectively?

In this editorial,we comment on the article published by Agatsuma et al in a recent issue of the World J Gastroenterol(2024;30:1368-1376).We firmly concur with Agatsuma et al regarding the vital significance of colorectal cancer(CRC)screening as a public health strategy to diminish disease *** exposed to risk factors for CRC,those with comorbid conditions,and those with limited health literacy should undergo ***,we believe that more regular screenings should be accompanied by a greater focus on primary prevention(PP)of *** remains a significant global health challenge,and its incidence is strongly linked to age,lifestyle,and socioeconomic *** is particularly noteworthy that the majority of CRC patients are diagnosed outside of established screening pathways and frequently at an advanced stage of the disease,and the majority of patients possess inadequate or even nonexistent knowledge regarding CRC,which significantly impacts the prognosis and imposes a substantial economic *** study revealed that CRC identified during hospital visits for comorbid conditions was typically diagnosed at an earlier stage than detected via symptomatic ***,early incidental detection of CRC aligns closely with the timing of discovery through routine cancer *** suggests that by adopting more inclusive screening protocols that combine opportunistic testing with traditional screening methods,health care systems can create a more comprehensive safety net for individuals at risk of ***,before maximizing the health benefits of screening programs,it is essential to make additional efforts prior to screening,such as raising awareness via public education,risk assessment,and personalized recommendations,enhancing the knowledge and skills of health care professionals,optimizing the accessibility and convenience of screening processes,ensuring the quality and safety of screening services,strengthening follow-up and su

Competing endogenous RNA networks and gastric cancer

Recent studies have showed that RNAs regulate each other with micro RNA(mi RNA) response elements(MREs) and this mechanism is known as "competing endogenous RNA(ce RNA)" hypothesis. Long noncoding RNAs(lnc RNAs) are supposed to play important roles in cancer. Compelling evidence suggests that lnc RNAs can interact with mi RNAs and regulate the expression of mi RNAs as ce RNAs. Several lnc RNAs such as H19, HOTAIR and MEG3 have been found to be associated with mi RNAs in gastric cancer(GC), generating regulatory crosstalk across the transcriptome. These MRE sharing elements implicated in the ce RNA networks(ce RNETs) are able to regulate m RNA expression. The ce RNA regulatory networks including m RNAs, mi RNAs, lnc RNAs and circular RNAs may play critical roles in tumorigenesis, and the perturbations of ce RNETs may contribute to the pathogenesis of GC.

Cerebral artery evaluation of dual energy CT angiography with dual source CT

Background Conventional computed tomography angiography （CTA） is time consuming, user-dependent and has poor image quality in skull base region. This study assessed the feasibility of a new method, dual energy CTA for depicting the cerebral *** Phantom scan was done with head CTA sequences on dual source CT and 64 spiral CT for radiation dose calculation. Dual energy CTA was done with dual source CT on 36 patients who were suspected of having cerebral vascular disease. Three series axial images in 0.75 mm thick, 0.4 mm increment were acquired, which were named with 80 kV, 140 kV and merged images; 80 kV and 140 kV images were transferred into dual energy software, and maximum intensity projection （MIP） image was generated quickly by dual energy bone remove （DEBR group）; merged images were transferred into In Space software to acquire MIP image through manual conventional bone remove （CoBR group）. Post processing time and reading time were compared. Image qualities of the two groups were compared, mainly focusing on skull base segments of internal carotid artery and bone subtraction. ANOVA and SNK tests were applied for radiation dose comparison. Student＇s t test and Wilcoxon rank sum test were applied for assessing differences between data for significance. Cohen＇s kappa was used for interobserver agreement. Results Radiation dose of phantom scan showed dual energy CTA was between digital bone subtraction and conventional CTA. The post processing time and reading time were much shorter in DEBR than CoBR, and image quality in skull base was much higher in DEBR than CoBR （P〈0.01）. There was no significant difference for suprasellar vessels between two groups （P〉0.5）. Interobserver agreement for all vessel segments was excellent （kappa=0.97）. Conclusions Dual energy CTA is a reliable, new modality for depicting cerebral artery, overcoming the limitation of conventional CTA in the skull base region. The Association between LINC00511 Variants and Breast Cancer Susceptibility among the Han Chinese Population

Objective LINC00511 has been considered an oncogene for breast cancer,however,the association between LINC00511 Single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs)and breast cancer risk remains *** A total of 504 breast cancer patients and 505 cancer-free controls were genotyped for 12 LINC00511 SNPs.A logistic regression analysis was conducted to explore the association between LINC00511 SNPs and breast cancer susceptibility,adjusting for reproductive factors.A haplotype analysis and interaction analysis were applied to assess the role of LINC00511 in breast *** LINC00511 SNPs were significantly correlated with breast *** TT genotype of rs11657109 reduced the risk of breast cancer(OR:0.454,95%CI:0.212-0.970),while the AG and GG genotypes of rs17780195 played a protective role(OR:0.723,95%CI:0.539-0.970;OR:0.398,95%CI:0.184-0.860,respectively).The mutation of rs9906859 may also lead to a reduction in breast cancer susceptibility(OR:0.682,95%CI:0.520-0.894).Furthermore,LINC00511 SNPs(rs4432291,rs1558535,rs17780195 and rs9906859)are associated with the HER-2 status(P<0.05 for all).The interaction of rs9906859,breastfeeding and age increased the breast cancer risk by 4.318(OR:5.318,95%CI:2.214-12.774).Conclusions LINC00511 SNPs were associated with the risk of breast *** was an association between LINC00511 SNPs and the HER-2 *** were interactions between LINC00511 SNPs and reproductive factors that affected the risk of breast cancer.

Salsolinol as an RNA m~6A methylation inducer mediates dopaminergic neuronal death by regulating YAP1 and autophagy

Salsolinol(1-methyl-6,7-dihydroxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline,Sal)is a catechol isoquinoline that causes neurotoxicity and shares structural similarity with 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine,an environmental toxin that causes Parkinson's ***,the mechanism by which Sal mediates dopaminergic neuronal death remains *** this study,we found that Sal significantly enhanced the global level of N~6-methyladenosine(m~6A)RNA methylation in PC12 cells,mainly by inducing the downregulation of the expression of m~6A demethylases fat mass and obesity-associated protein(FTO)and alk B homolog 5(ALKBH5).RNA sequencing analysis showed that Sal downregulated the Hippo signaling *** m~6A reader YTH domain-containing family protein 2(YTHDF2)promoted the degradation of m~6A-containing Yes-associated protein 1(YAP1)mRNA,which is a downstream key effector in the Hippo signaling ***,downregulation of YAP1 promoted autophagy,indicating that the mutual regulation between YAP1 and autophagy can lead to *** findings reveal the role of Sal on m~6A RNA methylation and suggest that Sal may act as an RNA methylation inducer mediating dopaminergic neuronal death through YAP1 and *** results provide greater insights into the neurotoxic effects of catechol isoquinolines compared with other studies and may be a reference for assessing the involvement of RNA methylation in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease.
