Anthropogenic noise interacts with the predation risk assessment in a free-ranging bird

Anthropogenic noise can affect a number of behavioral,physiological,and ecological aspects of animals from major taxonomic groups,raising serious conservation *** example,noise pollution impacts communicative behavior and perception of signals,movements and distribution,as well as predator–prey interactions,such as hunting success or predator detection and predation risk *** have carried out an experimental playback study,in which we investigated whether exposure to anthropogenic noise(sound of a tractor)distracts free-ranging barn swallows Hirundo rustica from paying attention to an approaching human“predator”(the“cognitive distraction”hypothesis),or whether noise leads to increased responsiveness to this“predator”(the“increased threat”hypothesis).The subjects were male barn swallows attending their breeding territories during the time when the females were *** found that barn swallow males initiated fight at signifcantly greater distances to the approaching human“predator”in the noise treatment than during the quiet control *** results suggest that anthropogenic noise causes increased vigilance and reactivity rather than a distraction,enabling birds to avoid the“predator”more *** further discuss the mechanism behind the increased alertness in response to noise and contrast the“increased threat”mechanism,usually tested in previous studies,with an alternative“cognitive sensitization”mechanism.

The effects of hydrogen charging time and pressure on the hydrogen embrittlement(HE)susceptibility of X52 pipeline steel material are studied by slow strain rate tensile *** fracture morphologies of the specimens are observed by scanning electron *** HE susceptibility of the X52 pipeline steel material increases with an increase in both hydrogen charging time and hydrogen *** a charging time of 96 h,the HE susceptibility index reaches 45.86%,approximately 3.6 times that at a charging time of 0 ***,a charging pressure of 4 MPa results in a HE susceptibility index of 31.61%,approximately 2.5 times higher than that at a charging pressure of 0.3 MPa.

The OsClV2s-OsCRN1 co-receptor regulates grain shape in rice

The highly conserved ClV–WUS negative feedback pathway plays a decisive role in regulating stem cell maintenance in shoot and floral meristems in higher plants,including Arabidopsis,rice,maize,and ***,we find significant natural variations in the OsClV2c,OsClV2d,and OsCRN1 loci in a genome-wide association study of grain shape in ***2a,OsClV2c,OsClV2d,and OsCRN1 negatively regulate grain length–width ratio and show distinctive geographical distribution,indica–japonica differentiation,and artificial selection ***,OsClV2a and OsCRN1 interact biochemically and genetically,suggesting that the two components function in a complex to regulate grain shape of ***,the genetic contributions of the haplotypes combining OsClV2a,OsClV2c,and OsCRN1 are significantly higher than those of each single gene alone in controlling key yield *** findings identify two groups of receptor-like kinases that may function as distinct co-receptors to control grain size in rice,thereby revealing a previously unrecognized role of the ClV class genes in regulating seed development and proposing a framework to understand the molecular mechanisms of the ClV–WUS pathway in rice and other crops.

Actin fibers are an important part of the cytoskeleton, providing vital support for the plasma membrane. This function is driven by its ATPase (ATP: adenosine triphosphate) activity, i.e., ATP+H2O -> ADP+Pi. This seemingly simple reaction has attracted much attention because the hydrolysis of ATP provides energy to support life processes. However, the reaction mechanism of ATP hydrolysis in actin is not clear. In order to gain deep insights into the functions of actin, it is essential to elucidate the reaction mechanism of the actin ATP hydrolysis. In this paper, we have studied the reaction mechanism of the ATP hydrolysis in actin by the combined quantum mechanical and molecular mechanics (QM/MM) calculations. Our results show that 1) bond cleavage of the P gamma-OS of ATP and bond formation between oxygen of the lytic water and P gamma atoms take place simultaneously, and this is the rate-limiting step of the hydrolysis; 2) the proton on the lytic water transfers to the phosphate to form H2P gamma O4-via one bridge water. The energy barrier of the complete reaction is 17.6 kcal/mol (1 kcal=4.184 kJ), which is in high agreement with the experimental value.

Selective deposition of a MOF at the spikes of Au nanostars for SERS detection

In the pursuit of advancing molecular sensing through surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy(SERS),the combination of plasmonic nanoparticles and metal-organic frameworks(MOFs)has emerged as a highly effective approach to enhance the sensitivity and selectivity of SERS ***,most prior investigations have predominantly focused on MOF-coated plasmonic nanoparticles in core@shell or layer-by-layer configurations,leaving a notable knowledge gap in exploring alternative *** we present a facile method to construct a particle-on-mirror architecture by selectively coating a MOF,zeolitic imidazolate framework-8(ZIF-8),onto the tips of Au nanostars and subsequently depositing the resultant nanoparticles onto a Au *** design integrates the electric field enhancement at the sharp tips and nanogaps,along with the molecular enrichment function within the porous MOF immobilized at the tips and nanogaps,leading to a substantial boost in the SERS signal *** a unique SERS platform enables consistent and outstanding SERS performance for analytes of different *** work opens up a promising strategy for constructing multifunctional nanostructures for sensitive SERS detection in real-life scenarios.

Experimental and numerical simulation study on the erosion behavior of the elbow of gathering pipeline in shale gas field

During the production period of shale gas, proppant particles and rock debris are produced together,which will seriously erode the elbows of gathering pipelines. In response to this problem, this paper takes the elbow of the gathering pipeline in the Changning Shale Gas Field as an example to test the erosion rate and material removal mechanism of the test piece at different angles of the elbow through experiments and compares the four erosion models with the experimental results. Through analysis, it is found that the best prediction model for quartz sand-carbon steel erosion is the Oka model. Based on the Oka model, FlUenT software was used to simulate and analyze the law of erosion of the elbow of the gas gathering pipeline under different gas flow velocities, gas gathering pressure, particle size, length of l1,and bending directions of the elbow. And a spiral pipeline structure is proposed to reduce the erosion rate of the elbow under the same working conditions. The results show that this structure can reduce erosion by 34%.

The commercial viability of thermoelectric(TE)devices relies heavily on two factors:cost reduction and efficiency *** this study,we first produce p-type Cu_(12)Sb_(4)S_(16-x)(x=0,3,4)using a low-temperature bottom-up approach and demonstrate Cu_(12)Sb_(4)S_(13)to show the best TE performance among the three tested ***,the TE energy conversion efficiency of Cu_(12)Sb_(4)S_(13)is further enhanced by optimizing its electronic band structure through the incorporation of small amounts of *** an optimal Te content of 5 mol%,more than a twofold increase in the TE figure of merit(zT)is *** gain insight into the mechanism of improvement on the transport properties of the mate-rial,we compare the interphase transport mechanism by incorporating nanodomains of different metals(Ag and Cu)into the Cu_(12)Sb_(4)S_(13)*** improved electrical conductivity obtained with Cu_(12)Sb_(4)S_(13)-Te nanocomposites is attributed to a charge flooding of the Cu_(12)Sb_(4)S_(13)*** contrast,excessive down-ward band-bending at the interphases of Ag/Cu metal-semiconductor drastically reduces the electrical ***,a weighted mobility(μw)analysis shows a dominant thermal activation of carri-ers in Cu_(12)Sb_(4)S_(13)-Te *** this material,a strong decrease in lattice thermal conductivity is also found,which is associated with a phonon-carrier scattering *** work shows the impor-tance of proper band-engineering in TE nanocomposites to decouple electrical and thermal transport to enhance TE performance,and the efficacy ofμw for electrical and thermal transport analysis.

Predictive value of preoperative routine examination for the prognosis of patients with pT2N0M0 or pT3N0M0 colorectal cancer

BACKGROUND In recent years,the incidence of colorectal cancer(CRC)has been *** the popularization of endoscopic technology,a number of early CRC has been ***,despite current treatment methods,some patients with early CRC still experience postoperative recurrence and *** To search for indicators associated with early CRC recurrence and metastasis to identify high-risk *** A total of 513 patients with pT2N0M0 or pT3N0M0 CRC were retrospectively enrolled in this *** of blood routine test,liver and kidney function tests and tumor markers were collected before *** were followed up through disease-specific database and telephone *** recurrence,metastasis or death were used as the end point of study to find the risk factors and predictive value related to early CRC recurrence and *** We comprehensively compared the predictive value of preoperative blood routine,blood biochemistry and tumor markers for disease-free survival(DFS)and overall survival(OS)of *** multivariate analysis demonstrated that low platelet count was significantly associated with poor DFS[hazard ratio(HR)=0.995,95% confidence interval(CI):0.991-0.999,P=0.015],while serum carcinoembryonic antigen(CEA)level(HR=1.008,95%CI:1.001-1.016,P=0.027)and serum total cholesterol level(HR=1.538,95%CI:1.026-2.305,P=0.037)were independent risk factors for *** cutoff value of serum CEA level for predicting OS was 2.74 ng/*** the OS of CRC patients with serum CEA higher than the cutoff value was worse than those with lower CEA level,the difference between the two groups was not statistically significant(P=0.075).CONClUSION For patients with T2N0M0 or T3N0M0 CRC,preoperative platelet count was a protective factor for DFS,while serum CEA level was an independent risk factor for *** that these measures are easier to detect and more acceptable to patients,they may have broader applications.

Optimized speed control for electric vehicles on dynamic wireless charging lanes: An eco-driving approach

As the adoption of Electric Vehicles(EVs)intensifies,two primary challenges emerge:limited range due to battery constraints and extended charging *** traditional charging stations,particularly those near highways,exacerbate these issues with necessary detours,inconsistent service levels,and unpredictable waiting *** emerging technology of dynamic wireless charging lanes(DWCls)may alleviate range anxiety and eliminate long charging stops;however,the driving speed on DWCl significantly affects charging efficiency and effective charging ***,the existing research has addressed load balancing optimization on Dynamic Wireless Charging(DWC)systems to a limited *** address this critical issue,this study introduces an innovative eco-driving speed control strategy,providing a novel solution to the multi-objective optimization problem of speed control on *** utilize mathematical programming methods and incorporate the longitudinal dynamics of vehicles to provide an accurate physical model of *** objective functions are formulated to tackle the challenges at hand:reducing travel time,increasing charging efficiency,and achieving load balancing on DWCl,which corresponds to four control *** results of numerical tests indicate that a comprehensive control strategy,which considers all objectives,achieves a minor sacrifice in travel time reduction while significantly improving energy efficiency and load ***,by defining the energy demand and speed range through an upper operation limit,a relatively superior speed control strategy can be *** work contributes to the discourse on DWCl integration into modern transportation systems,enhancing the EV driving experience on major roads.
