Profiles and removal efficiency of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by two different types of sewage treatment plants in Hong Kong

Sewage discharge could be a major source of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons （PAHs） in the coastal waters. Stonecutters Island and Shatin Sewage Treatment Works （SCISTW and STSTW） in Hong Kong, adopted chemically enhanced primary treatment and biological treatment, respectively. This study aimed at （1） determining the removal efficiencies of PAHs, （2） comparing the capabilities in removing PAHs, and （3） characterizing the profile of each individual PAHs, in the two sewage treatment plants （STPs）. Quantification of 16 PAHs was conducted by a Gas Chromatography. The concentrations of total PAHs decreased gradually along the treatment processes （from 301 ± 255 and 307 ± 217 ns/L to 14.9 ± 12.1 and 63.3 ± 54.1 ng/L in STSTW and SCISTW, respectively）. It was noted that STSTW was more capable in removing total PAHs than SCISTW with average total removal effidency 94.4% ± 4.12% us. 79.2% ± 7.48% （p 〈 0.05）. The removal of PAHs was probably due to sorption in particular matter, confirmed by the higher distribution coefficient of individual and total PAHs in solid samples （dewatered sludge contained 92.5% and 74.7% of total PAHs in SCISTW and STSTW, respectively） than liquid samples （final efffluent-total contained 7.53% and 25.3% of total PAHs in STSTW and SCISTW, respectively）. Despite the impressive capability of STSTW and SCISTW in removing PAHs, there was still a considerable amount of total PAHs （1.85 and 39.3 ks/year, respectively for the two STPs） being discharged into Hone Kon coastal waters, which would be an environmental concern.

目的系统评价和整合社区居家老年人跌倒经历的看法与体验,为后续发展跌倒预防及管理的干预提供信息,为健康照护实践提供建议。方法依据乔安娜布里格斯研究所(Joanna Briggs Institute,JBI)质性系统评价方法论进行质性研究meta整合,在PubMed、CINAHL、PsycInfo、Embase、Web of science等数据库进行检索,发表时间限定为2010年1月至2023年5月,仅纳入经同行评审的英文文献。使用JBI质性研究质量评价标准评价纳入文献的方法学质量,按照ConQual评分准则检验整合结果的信度。本综述方案已在PROSPERO注册(CRD 42023421789)。结果共纳入10项研究,方法学质量评价得分为60%至90%。提炼59个完好明确的结果,将相似结果归纳组合形成7个类别,并综合成3个整合结果,在ConQual评分上,综合结果2评为中等,综合结果1和3评为低等。整合结果1:跌倒后老年人经历了身体的损伤和疼痛、日常活动受限、社交受限、独立性降低或丧失、并有恐惧和无助感。整合结果2:经历跌倒后,老年人反思跌倒的原因,并识别、解释风险因素。整合结果3:老年人对跌倒原因和后果有正面和负面的看法,其采取的应对跌倒的措施包括使用辅助器具、纠正风险因素、寻求医疗帮助、关注身体和心理状况等。结论医疗卫生提供者应重视老年人跌倒后的感受、经历,以及对跌倒原因和影响的反思,进行特定的干预。今后还需要进行纵向研究,以检测跌倒对老年人的长期影响,深入了解他们的反思、感知、态度和预防行为随时间的改变情况。

Finite-Time Fuzzy Sliding Mode Control for Nonlinear Descriptor Systems

This article addresses the finite-time boundedness(FTB)problem for nonlinear descriptor ***,the nonlinear descriptor system is represented by the Takagi-Sugeno(T-S)model,where fuzzy representation is assumed to be appearing not only in both the state and input matrices but also in the derivative *** using a descriptor redundancy approach,the fuzzy representation in the derivative matrix is reformulated into a linear ***,we introduce a fuzzy sliding mode control(FSMC)law,which ensures the finite-time boundedness(FTB)of closed-loop fuzzy control systems over the reaching phase and sliding motion ***,by further employing the descriptor redundancy representation,the sufficient condition for designing FSMC law,which ensures the FTB of the closed-loop control systems over the entire finite-time interval,is derived in terms of linear matrix inequalities(LMIs).Finally,a simulation study with control of a photovoltaic(PV)nonlinear system is given to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

This paper considers the class of autonomous algebraic ordinary differential equations(AODEs)of order one,and studies their Liouvillian general *** particular,let F(y,w)=0 be a rational algebraic curve over *** authors give necessary and sufficient conditions for the autonomous first-order AODE F(y,y′)=0 to have a Liouvillian solution over ***,the authors show that a Liouvillian solutionαof this equation is either an algebraic function over C(x)or an algebraic function over C(exp(ax)).As a byproduct,these results lead to an algorithm for determining a Liouvillian general solution of an autonomous AODE of order one of genus *** parametrizations of rational algebraic curves play an important role on this method.

Lipidomics as a Principal Tool for Advancing Biomedical Research

Lipidomics, which targets at the construction of a comprehensive map of lipidome comprising the entire lipid pool within a cell or tissue, is currently emerging as an independent discipline at the interface of lipid biology, technology and medicine. The diversity and complexity of the biological lipidomes call for technical innovation and improvement to meet the needs of various biomedical studies. The recent wave of expansion in the field of lipidomic research is mainly attributed to advances in analytical technologies, in particular, the development of new mass spectrometric and chromatographic tools for the characterization and quantification of the wide array of diverse lipid species in the cellular lipidome. Here, we review some of the key technical advances in lipidome analysis and put forth the applications of lipidomics in addressing the biological roles of lipids in numerous disease models including the metabolic syndrome, neurodegenerative diseases and infectious diseases, as well as the increasing urgency to construct the lipidome inventory for various mammalian/organism models useful for biomedical research.

BACKGROUND Postoperative atrial fibrillation(POAF)is a common yet understudied clinical issue after coronary artery bypass graft(CABG)leading to higher mortality rates and *** systematic review and metaanalysis evaluated the rates of adverse outcomes between patients with and without POAF in patients treated with CABG or combined *** The search period was from the beginning of PubMed and Embase to May 18th,2020 with no language *** inclusion criteria were:(1)studies comparing new onset atrial fibrillation before or after revascularization *** new onset AF before or after *** outcomes assessed included allcause mortality,cardiac death,cerebral vascular accident(CVA),myocardial infarction(MI),repeated revascularization,major adverse cardiac event(MACE),and major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events(MACCEs).RESULTS Of the 7,279 entries screened,11 studies comprising of 57,384 patients were *** to nonPOAF,POAF was significantly associated with higher risk of allcause mortality(Risk Ratio(RR)=1.58;95%Confidence Interval(CI):1.42−1.76,P<0.00001)with accompanying high level of heterogeneity(I^(2)=62%).Conclusions Patients with POAF after CABG or combined procedures are at an increased risk of allcause mortality or ***,POAF after such procedures should be closely monitored and treated judiciously to minimize risk of further *** there are studies on POAF versus no POAF on outcomes,the heterogeneity suggests that further studies are needed.

Sea Nine 211 as antifouling biocide: A coastal pollutant of emerging concern

Sea Nine 211, with 4,5-dichloro-2-n-octyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one（DCOIT） being the biocidal ingredient, is a widely-used antifouling agent to deter the undesirable biofouling phenomenon. It is commercially promoted as an environmentally acceptable antifoulant mainly due to its claimed rapid degradation in marine environment. However, increasing researches document varying degradative kinetics in different environments, proving that Sea Nine 211 is actually not degraded equally fast around the world（half-life between〈 1 day and 13.1 days）. Large-scale application of Sea Nine 211 in antifouling coatings has also caused global contamination of marine environment in various compartments. For example, accumulation of Sea Nine 211 is detected as high as 3700 ng/L in Spanish seawater and 281 ng/g dry weight in Korean sediment. Considering that Sea Nine 211 is highly toxic against non-target marine organisms, environmental risk assessment finds that most marine organisms are endangered by Sea Nine 211 in worst-case scenario. Its endocrine disrupting and reproductive impairing effects at environmentally worst-case concentrations further constitute a long-term threat to the maintenance of population ***, in the light of the varying degradability, environmental pollution and high toxicity, especially the endocrine disruption, Sea Nine 211 as an antifouling agent is likely to cause non-negligible damages to the marine ecosystem. There is an urgency to perform a systematic ecological risk assessment of Sea Nine 211 to prevent the potential impacts on the health of marine environment. A regular monitoring also becomes necessary to place the usage of antifouling biocides under control.
