A survey of sub-inhibitory concentrations of antibiotics in the environment

Antibiotics are poorly metabolized,and can enter the environment via human waste streams,agricultural run-off and pharmaceutical *** consequently expect to see a concentration gradient of antibiotic compounds radiating from areas of human *** antibiotics should be thought of as pollutants,as they can accumulate,and have biological *** antibiotic pollutants can increase rates of mutation and lateral transfer events,and continue to exert selection pressure even at sub-inhibitory ***,we conducted a literature survey on environmental concentrations of *** collated 887 data points from 40 peer-reviewed *** then determined whether these concentrations were biologically relevant by comparing them to their minimum selective concentrations,usually defined as between 1/4 and 1/230 of the minimum inhibitory *** concentrations of antibiotics surveyed often fall into this *** general,the antibiotic concentrations recorded in aquatic and sediment samples were *** findings indicate that environmental concentrations of antibiotics are likely to be influencing microbial ecology,and to be driving the selection of antibiotic resistant bacteria.

Adequate provision of natural ventilation in tropical areas is regarded as one of the design cntena for assessing ‘green'' or ’‘sustainable'' building. Driving forces for natural ventilation in those areas are basically wind-induced action, not stack effect nor buoyancy of warm air columns. wind-induced air movement is a transient phenomenon depends not only on the wind speeds measured in some designated sites, but strongly affected by the surrounding environment. This is particularly obvious in a dense urban area where buildings are closely built together. For a building located adjacent to a taller building, turbulent effects due to incident wind fields would be important. Note that windows or even refuge floors might be opened at some levels, giving flow paths to change the entire patterns of air flow and pressure distnbution. In this paper, the wind-induced indoor airflow in a building adjacent to a vertical wall is studied by Computational Fluid Dynamics. A CFD software based on large-eddy simulations is selected. Different scenanos on building height, openings and distances away from the vertical wall will be simulated. Incident airflows of a parabolic boundary layer and a top-hat flow pattern are considered. The separate flow at the sharp comer would be different for these two incident airflow profiles. Results are useful not only for providing better ventilation design, but also for working out fire safety management in case of accidents. Note that smoke, or even flame, will spread by following the wind-induced air motion.

Currently, there are a limited number of dynamic models available for braided composite plates with large overall motions, despite the incorporation of three-dimensional(3D) braided composites into rotating blade components. In this paper, a dynamic model of 3D 4-directional braided composite thin plates considering braiding directions is established. Based on kirchhoff's plate assumptions, the displacement variables of the plate are expressed. By incorporating the braiding directions into the constitutive equation of the braided composites, the dynamic model of the plate considering braiding directions is obtained. The effects of the speeds, braiding directions, and braided angles on the responses of the plate with fixed-axis rotation and translational motion, respectively, are investigated. This paper presents a dynamic theory for calculating the deformation of 3D braided composite structures undergoing both translational and rotational motions. It also provides a simulation method for investigating the dynamic behavior of non-isotropic material plates in various applications.

The aim of this study was to perform computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations on the airflows at the Hong kong International Airport (HkIA). In particular, the effects of hangar buildings and terrain were studied to explore the effects of turbulence on flying aircraft, especially during landing. The CFD simulation showed that significant differences in wind speeds may occur between the north and the south runways on the western part of the HkIA under typhoon conditions with a strong north to northwesterly wind. Simulation also showed that the hanger buildings between the two runways on the western side and the nearby terrain could be causing the observed difference in the wind speeds. The results also indicated that these obstacles could cause significant wind speed variations at the western end of the south runway. This may affect the operation of landing aircraft. The CFD results for a typical typhoon case were analyzed and found to match the wind data recorded by an aircraft landing that day.

we propose a dual decomposition based algorithm that solves the AC optimal power flow(ACOPF) problem in the radial distribution systems and microgrids in a collaborative and distributed manner. The proposed algorithm adopts the second-order cone program(SOCP) relaxed branch flow ACOPF model. In the proposed algorithm, bus-level agents collaboratively solve the global ACOPF problem by iteratively sharing partial variables with its 1-hop neighbors as well as carrying out local scalar computations that are derived using augmented Lagrangian and primal-dual subgradient methods. we also propose two distributed computing platforms, i. e., high-performance computing(HPC) based platform and hardware-in-theloop(HIL) testbed, to validate and evaluate the proposed algorithm. The computation and communication performances of the proposed algorithm are quantified and analyzed on typical IEEE test systems. Experimental results indicate that the proposed algorithm can be executed on a fully distributed computing structure and yields accurate ACOPF solution. Besides, the proposed algorithm has a low communication overhead.

The novel interleukin(IL)-1 family cytokine IL-33 has been shown to activate T helper 2(Th2)lymphocytes,mast cells and basophils to produce an array of proinflammatory cytokines,as well as to mediate blood eosinophilia,IgE secretion and hypertrophy of airway epithelium in *** the present study,we characterized the activation of human eosinophils by IL-33,and investigated the underlying intracellular signaling ***-33 markedly enhanced eosinophil survival and upregulated cell surface expression of the adhesion molecule intercellular adhesion molecule(ICAM)-1 on eosinophils,but it suppressed that of ICAM-3 and *** addition,IL-33 mediates significant release of the proinflammatory cytokine IL-6 and the chemokines CXCL8 and *** found that IL33-mediated enhancement of survival,induction of adhesion molecules,and release of cytokines and chemokines were differentially regulated by activation of the nuclear factor(NF)-kB,p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase(MAPk)and extracellular signal-regulated kinase(ERk)***,we compared the above IL-33 activities with two structurally and functionally related cytokines,IL-1 B and ***-1β,but not IL-18,markedly upregulated cell surface expression of ***-1βand IL-18 also significantly enhanced eosinophil survival,and induced the release of IL-6 and chemokines CXCL8 and CCL2 via the activation of the NF-κB,p38 MAPk and ERk *** efects on the release of IL-6 were also observed in combined treatment withIL-1B,IL-18 and *** together,our findings provide insight into IL-33-mediated activation of eosinophils via differential intracellular signaling cascades in the immunopathogenesis of allergic inflammation.
