The deformed microstructures of a TiNi shape memory alloy were investigated in present study to clarify the deformation *** is found that the stress-strain curve was divided into three stages based on the deformation *** cause of martensitic stabilization effect was also interpreted by paying special attention to the deformed *** electron microscopic examination revealed that at the early stage of deformation martensitic reorientation and compound twinning relieved some of the elastic strain energy stored in martensite,and this contributes to the martensitic stabilization ***,when deformation strain became larger,the density of dislocations increased *** boundaries were also *** degree of ordering was therefore decreased due to dislocations and antiphase *** disordering was another cause of martensitic stabilization *** the middle stage of deformation martensitic stabilization was attributed to the two reasons above.

An experiment is made to detect the land-cover change in the area located to the south of Aksu in the northern Taklimakan desert through analyses of satellite data pixel by pixel basis. The analyzed data are those observed in the late summer and early autumn of 1973, 1977, 1993 and 1995. As a parameter of land-cover, SAVI (Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index) derived from the data of Landsat MSS and JERS-1 OPS (Optical Sensor) is used. The result indicates the increase of vegetation in the oasis areas, confluent area of the Yarkant and kashgar Rivers and around reservoirs while little change occurs in the desert area. The 1973 satellite image shows the abundant flow in the Yarkant River while the river is almost dried up in the satellite images of later years. The trend of the decrease in the Hotan River flow is recognized although not so dramatic as that of the Yarkant River.

It has been thought that granitic crust, having been formed on the surface, must have survived through the Earth＇s evolution because of its buoyancy. At subduction zones continental crust is predominantly created by arc magmatism and is returned to the mantle via sediment subduction, subduction erosion, and continental subduction. Granitic rocks, the major constituent of the continental crust, are lighter than the mantle at depths shallower than 270 km, but we show here, based on first principles calcu- lations, that beneath 270 km they have negative buoyancy compared to the surrounding material in the upper mantle and transition zone, and thus can be subducted in the depth range of 270-660 km. This suggests that there can be two reservoirs of granitic material in the Earth, one on the surface and the other at the base of the mantle transition zone （MTZ）. The accumulated volume of subducted granitic material at the base of the MTZ might amount to about six times the present volume of the continental crust. Our calculations also show that the seismic velocities of granitic material in the depth range from 270 to 660 km are faster than those of the surrounding mantle. This could explain the anomalous seismic-wave velocities observed around 660 km depth. The observed seismic scatterers and reported splitting of the 660 km discontinuity could be due to jadeite dissociation, chemical discontinuities between granitic material and the surrounding mantle, or a combination thereof.

Erwinia (E) gum, an extracellular polysaccharide, is composed of fucose, galatose, glucose and glucuronic acid. Its viscosity behavior was investigated by a low-shear-rate multiball viscometer and a rotational viscometer. Its weight-average molecular weight M-w and intrinsic viscosity [eta] in 0.2 mol/L NaCl aqueous solution were measured by light scattering method at 35 degrees C and viscometry at 25 degrees C and found to be 1.06 x 10(6) g/mol and 1050 mL/g, respectively, and its aggregates in aqueous solution were proved by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). These results indicated that E gum in water has exceedingly high viscosity and exhibits Binham fluid behavior, owing to its aggregation. The viscosity of E gum decreased with increasing temperature, and the turning point appeared at 38 degrees C for dilute solution and 80 degrees C for concentrated solution suggesting that the aggregates of E gum in water started to disaggregate under these temperatures. In addition, the aggregates can be disrupted by adding either acid or base. The experimental results indicated that the E gum is a good thickening agent, and its fluid behavior is similar to xanthan.

Porous architecture in bone substitutes,notably the interconnectivity of pores,is a critical factor for bone ***,controlling the pore interconnectivity while maintaining the microarchitecture has not yet been achieved using conventional methods,such as ***,we fabricated a porous block using the crystal growth of calcium sulfate dihydrate,and controlled the pore interconnectivity by limiting the region of crystal *** calcium sulfate dihydrate blocks were transformed to bone apatite,carbonate apatite(CO_(3)Ap)through dissolution–precipitation ***,CO_(3)Ap blocks with 15%and 30%interconnected pore volumes were obtained while maintaining the microarchitecture:they were designated as CO_(3)Ap-15 and CO_(3)Ap-30,*** 4 weeks after implantation in a rabbit femur defect,new bone formed throughout CO_(3)Ap-30,whereas little bone was formed in the center region of CO_(3)*** 12 weeks after implantation,a large portion of CO_(3)Ap-30 was replaced with new bone and the boundary with the host bone became *** contrast,CO_(3)Ap-15 remained in the defect and the boundary with the host bone was still ***,the interconnected pores promote bone ingrowth,followed by replacement of the material with new *** findings provide a useful guide for designing bone substitutes for rapid bone regeneration.

This paper reported an effectiveness of pre-cold rolling-induced{332}／113[twins combined with subsequent isothermal x-phase formation for enhancement of uniform elongation in a b-type Ti–15Mo alloy with high yield strength ***{332}／113[twins were induced by cold rolling with an thickness reduction of 5%,which had little effect on x-phase precipitation after aging at 573 k for 3.6 *** after the cold rolling was further activated during tensile deformation,even with the presence of isothermal *** combination of twins and x-phase enhanced uniform elongation from 0 to 9%at yield strength level of 890 *** high yield strength was mainly dominated by dislocation slip due to the isothermal x-phase formation,and early onset of plastic instability after yielding was hindered due to the pre-cold rolling-induced *** microstructural refinement was induced by further twinning activation during deformation,which resulted in high work hardening rate corresponding enhancement of uniform elongation.
