Economic Implications of Avoiding Dangerous Climate Change： An Analysis Using the AIM/CGE [Global] Model

The purpose of this study is to analyze economic impacts of reducing greenhouse gases emissions significantly. A large amount of emissions reductions are required throughout this century to avoid dangerous climate change, and understanding the economic consequences under such situations is important and meaningful. The AIM/CGE [Global] model, a recursive dynamic computable general equilibrium model on a global scale, is applied to analyze carbon prices and changes in GDP when implementing five policy scenarios represented by emissions pathways, respectively. As a result of the analysis, higher carbon prices and larger decreases in GDP compared to the baseline emissions scenario are observed when emissions are reduced more deeply. However, such GDP losses are rather small and insignificant compared to the GDP growth observed throughout the century. These results suggest that although it is challenging to reduce emissions until the level to avoid dangerous climate change, there is a sufficient possibility to achieve it from economic perspectives.

Nanostructured multiphase zirconia films （MZFs） are deposited on Zr substrate by the irradiation of energetic oxygen ions emanated from a plasma focus device. The oxygen operating gas pressure of 1 mbar （1 bar=105 Pa） provides the most appropriate ion energy flux to deposit crystalline ZrO2 films. X-ray diffraction （XRD） patterns reveal the formation of polycrystalline ZrO2 films. The crystallite size （CS）, crystal growth, and dislocation densities are attributed to increasing focus shots, sample axial distances, and work.ng gas pressures. Phase and orientation transformations from t-ZrO2 to m-ZrO2 and c-ZrO2 are associated with increasing focus shots and continuous annealing. For lower （200 ℃） annealing temperature （AT）, full width at half maximum （FWHM） of diffraction peak. CS, and dislocation density （δ） for （020） plane are found to be 0.494, 16.6 nm, and 3.63×10-3 nm-2 while for higher （400 ℃） AT, these parameters for （111） plane are found to be 0.388, 20.87 nm, and 2.29×10-3 nm-2, respectively. Scanning electron microscope （SEM） results demonstrate the formation of rounded grains with uniform distribution. The estimated values of atomic ratio （O/Zr） in ZrO2 films deposited for different axial distances （6 cm, 9 cm, and 12 cm） are found to be 2.1, 2.2, and 2.3, respectively. Fourier transform infrared （FTIR） analysis reveals that the bands appearing at 441 cm-1 and 480 cm-1 belong to m-ZrO2 and t-ZrO2 phases, respectively. Maximum microhardness （8.65±0.45 GPa） of ZrO2 film is ～ 6.7 times higher than the microhardness of virgin Zr.

This paper presents the results of fire resistance tests on carbon fiber-reinforced polymer(CFRP)strengthened concrete flexural members,i.e.,T-beams and *** strengthened members were protected with fire insulation and tested under the combined effects of thermal and structural *** variables considered in the tests include the applied load level,extent of strengthening,and thick.ess of the fire insulation applied to the beams and ***,a previously developed numerical model was validated against the data generated from the fire tests;subsequently,it was utilized to undertak. a case *** from fire tests and numerical studies indicate that owing to the protection provided by the fire insulation,the insulated CFRP-strengthened beams and slabs can withstand four and three hours of standard fire exposure,respectively,under service load *** insulation layer impedes the temperature rise in the member;therefore,the CFRP-concrete composite action remains active for a longer duration and the steel reinforcement temperature remains below 400°C,which in turn enhances the capacity of the beams and slabs.

This paper deals with parameterization method based on meteorological parameters for calculation of dry deposition of S compounds on natural surface (leaf of Cassia siamea) and direct measurement method. A scheme based on meteorological parameters has been evolved to calculate the dry deposition theoretically and a computer program has been developed. Experimentally dry deposition flux of S on leaf of Cassia siamea was measured by exposing the leaf surfaces on non-dewy, non-foggy and non rainy days and washing the leaf surfaces with deionised water and samples were analyzed by Dionex Dx-500 Ion Chromatograph. Atmospheric concentration of SO2 was 3.54±1.41 μg m-3 and particulate SO42- was 2.72±1.15 μg m-3. Theoretically obtained dry deposition velocity of SO2 and SO42- are 0.32 cm s-1 and 0.75cm s-1, respectively. The calculated deposition of S as total sulphate (gaseous SO2 and particulate SO42-) to Cassia leaf was 2.05±0.78mg m-2 d-1 and experimentally obtained dry deposition of S as sulphate was 1.07±1.35 mg m-2 d-1. The experimentally and theoretically obtained mean values for S as SO42- are comparable.

The propagation of the optical solitons is usually governed by the nonlinear Schrodinger equations. In this article, the two variable （G＇/G,1/G）-expansion method is employed to construct exact traveling wave solutions with parameters of two higher order nonlinear Schrodinger equations describing the propagation of femtosecond pulses in nonlinear optical fibers. When the parameters are replaced by special values, the well-k.own solitary wave solutions of these equations rediscovered from the traveling waves. This method can be thought of as the generalization of well-k.own original （G＇/G）-expansion method proposed by M. Wang et al. It is shown that the two variable （G＇/G,1/G）-expansion method provides a more powerful mathematical tool for solving many other nonlinear PDEs in mathematical physics.

The size distribution of water-stable aggregates and the variability of organic C,N and P contents over aggregate size fractions were studied for orchard,upland,paddy,and grassland soils with high,medium,and low fertility *** results showed that > 5 mm aggregates in the cultivated upland and paddy soils were 44.0% and 32.0%,respectively,less than those in the un-tilled orchard *** C and soil N in different size aggregate fractions in orchard soil with high fertility were significantly higher than those of other land ***,the contents of soil P in different size aggregates were significantly greater in the paddy soil as compared to the other land *** organic C,N and P contents were higher in larger aggregates than those in smaller *** amount of water-stable aggregates was positively correlated to their contribution to soil organic C,N and *** orchard and grassland soils,the > 5 mm aggregates made the greatest contribution to soil nutrients,while for upland soil,the 0.25-0.053 mm aggregates contributed the most to soil ***,the land use with minimum disturbance was beneficial for the formation of a better soil *** dominant soil aggregates in different land use types determined the distribution of soil *** efficiency of soil P could be improved by converting other land uses to the paddy soil.

Occurrence and Evaluation of Chromium Reducing Bacteria in Seepage Water from Chromite Mine Quarries of Orissa, India

Chromium pollution due to leaching and weathering of chromite mine overburden in mine seepage water is a serious environmental problem. In an attempt to explore the indigenous chromate resistant and reducing bacteria from chromite mine quarry seepage, 145 aerobic, heterotrophic bacteria were isolated from 14 mine seepage samples derived from chromite mines of Suk.nda valley and Baula-Nuasahi belt in Orissa, India. A total of 109 isolates which were tolerant to 2 mM Cr(VI) showed different degrees of Cr(VI) reducing activ-ity in complex k.C medium and synthetic Vogel Bonner (VB) broth. Ten isolates belonging to genera lik. Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, Alcaligenes, Cupriavidus and Corynebacterium were selected on the basis of their chromate reducing efficiency and it was found that they could reduce more than 50 and 75% of Cr(VI) in VB broth and k.C medium respectively. The sole Gram-positive isolate, Corynebacterium paurometabo-lum Sk.D 1204 (MTCC 8730) showed maximum chromate reducing capacity in both VB broth (63.7%) and k.C medium (92%) and was capable of reducing nearly 95% of the total Cr(VI) in the mine seepage when it was grown in the mine seepage supplemented with 2% VB concentrate.
