Non-mycorrhizal fungal endophytes in two orchids of kaiga forest(Western Ghats), India

We used standard isolation protocols to explore the endophytic fungal communities in three tissue types of two dominant orchids （Bulbophyllum neilgherrense and Vanda testacea） of the kaiga forest of the Western Ghats. We surface sterilized and assessed 90 segments of each orchid for the occurrence and diversity of endophytic fungal taxa. The 118 fungal isolates were obtained from root, bulb and leaves of B. neilgherrense, consisting of 17 anamorphic taxa （range, 10-15 taxa） with 1.3 fungal taxa per segment （range, 1.2-1.4 taxa）. Four taxa （Aspergillus flavus, A. niger, Penicillium sp. and morpho sp. 1） belonged to the core group （11.1%--32.2%）. The relative abundance of A. flavus and morpho sp. 1 was more than 10%. A total of 130 fungal isolates from roots, stems and leaves of V. testacea yielded 20 anamorphic taxa （range, 11-15 taxa） with 1.4 fungal taxa per segment （range, 1.4-1.5 taxa）. Aspergillusflavus, A. niger, A. ochraceus, Gliocladium viride, Penicillium sp. and morpho sp. 1 belonged to the core group. Relative abundance exceeded 10% for A. flavus, A. niger, and morpho sp. 1. The Simpson and Shannon diversity indices were higher in leaf than root or bulb/stem of both orchids. Jaccard＇s similarity coefficient was higher between root and leaf in both orchids （56.3%-60%） than between other pairs. Our study revealed that the endophytic fungal assemblage and diversity orB. neilgherrense and E testacea of kaiga forest of the Western Ghats were relatively similar between orchids and their tissues.

Nutrient composition of pill millipede manure of the Western Ghats, India

Nutrient composition of the manure of four pill millipedes （Arthrosphaera dalyi, ,4. davisoni, ,4. fumosa and,4, magna） inhabiting in semi-evergreen forests and plantations of the Western Ghats of Southwest India was evaluated. The quantity and quality of fecal pellets differed between millipedes and their habitats （forest and plantation）. Organic carbon content in manure was lower in plantations than in forests, while nitrogen content was elevated in plantations. The carbon to nitrogen （C/N） ratio of manure was lower in plantations compared to forests. The phosphorus content in manure was elevated in plantations in all except for A. dalyi. Calcium content of manure was increased in plantations than in forests. The contents of magnesium, potassium and phenolics in manure showed varied results. The mass of fecal pellets was correlated only with volume in forests （r=0.882; p 〈0.01） and pH in plantations （r=0.616; p 〈0.05）, while the volume of fecal pellets was correlated with nitrogen content in forests （r=0.751; p 〈0.01） and cal- cium in plantations （=0.619; p 〈0.05）. The conductivity was positively correlated with phosphorus and potassium, while magnesium was negatively correlated in forests as well as plantations. Potassium and magnesium were negatively correlated in forests （r=0.920; p〈0.001） and plantations （t=0.692; p 〈0.05）. Overall, the physicochemical characteristics and nutrient composition of fecal pelets differed between millipedes as well as habitats. The low carbon to nitrogen ratio and the increased nitrogen, phosphorus and calcium content in the manure of millipedes inhabiting in plantations indicates possibilities for successfully employing them for in situ composting of forest or plantation residues.

Serpentinites from the inside corner high （6°38.5′S/68°19.34′E） from the Northern Central Indian Ridge （NCIR） are comprised mainly of high Mg-rich lizardite and chrysotile pseudomorphs with varying morphologies. ＇Mesh rim＇, ＇window＇, ＇hourglass＇ and ＇bastite＇ are the most common textures displayed by both chrysotile and lizardite. Numerous chrysotile veins in association with cross cutting magnetite veins indicate an advanced stage of serpentinisation. The relatively high abundance of chrysotile and lizardite suggest their close association and formation at a temperature below 250℃. Abundant ＇mesh rim＇ and ＇bastite＇ texture and variegated matrix reveal that the present serpentinites might have formed due to the interaction of harzburgite and seawater. Positive Eu anomaly （Eu/Eu^＊ up to ＋3.38）, higher La/Sm （up to 4.40） and Nb/La （up to 6.34） ratios suggest substantial hydrothermal influence during the formation of the serpentinites.

Objective:To investigate the analgesic activity of methanolic extract of Amaranthus viridis(A. viridis),Amaranthus caudatus(***) and Amaranthus spinosus(***).Methods:In this study,the analgesic activity of methanol extracts of all three plants at doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg were investigated by acetic acid-induced writhings test,hot plate test and tail immersion test for ***:It was found that all the three plants showed significant pain management effect(Pkg,but showed a less significant effect at a dose of 20 mg/kg in the entire tests used for evaluation of analgesic activities(P<0.05).Conclusions:Methanol extracts of ***,*** and *** show potent analgesic activities,and this study provides the scientific proof for their traditional claims.

PsRNA:A Computing Engine for the Comparative Identification of Putative Small RNA Locations within Intergenic Regions

Small RNAs （sRNAs） are non-coding transcripts exerting their functions in the cells directly. Identification of sRNAs is a difficult task due to the lack of clear sequence and structural biases. Most sRNAs are identified within genus specific intergenic regions in related genomes. However, several of these regions remain un-annotated due to lack of sequence homology and/or potent statistical identification tools. A computational engine has been built to search within the intergenic regions to identify and roughly annotate new putative sRNA regions in Enterobacteriaceae genomes. It utilizes experimentally known sRNA data and their flanking genes/kEGG Orthology （kO） numbers as templates to identify similar sRNA regions in related query genomes. The search engine not only has the capability to locate putative intergenic regions for specific sRNAs, but also has the potency to locate conserved, shuffled or deleted gene clusters in query genomes. Because it uses the kO terms for locating functionally important regions such as sRNAs, any further kO number assignment to additional genes will increase the sensitivity. The PsRNA server is used for the identification of putative sRNA regions through the information retrieved from the sRNA of interest. The power output of the photovoltaic(PV) system having multiple arrays gets reduced to a great extent when it is partially shaded due to environmental hindrances. The maximum power trackers which are conventionally used may not be competent enough to find the maximum power point(MPP) during partially shaded conditions. The sensible reason for the failure of conventional trackers is during partial shaded conditions the PV arrays exhibit multi peak power curves, thereby making simple maximum power point tracking(MPPT) algorithms like perturb and observe(P&O) to get stuck with local maxima instead of capturing global ***, global search MPPT aided by evolutionary and swarm intelligence algorithms will be conducive to find global power point during partially shaded conditions. This work suggests a unified controller which feeds control signal to its power electronic conditioner placed at each module. The evolutionary algorithm which is taken into consideration in this work is differential evolution(DE).The performance of the proposed method is compared to the classical un-dimensional search controller and it is evident from the Matlab/Simulink results that the unified controller prevails over the distributed counterpart.
