Factors Influencing the Direct Electrochemical Reduction of Nb_2O_5 Pellets to Nb Metal in Molten Chloride salts

Powder compacted and sintered Nb205 pellets were cathodically polarised against graphite anode in calcium chloride melt at 1173 k to study the influence of various factors on the electrochemical reduction of the oxide. The parameters were; duration and temperature of electrolysis, open porosity of pellets, nature of anode, mode of electrolysis and configuration of the oxide cathode. The experiments were also conducted in kC1, kC1-25 tool% CaC12 and NaC1 melts to understand the effect of melt composition on the electroreduction. Different Ca-Nb-O and Nb-O intermediates were found in the pellets electrolysed for different durations of time in CaC12 melt which eventually reduced to Nb. The current efficiency of the process decreased with increasing duration of electrolysis. Decrease in electrolysis temperature from 1 173 to 1073 k led to the decrease in the rate of reduction of the oxide pellets. Pellets with high open porosity reduced faster. Carbon contamination of the melt was relatively less when pyrolytic graphite was used as anode. Of all the melts studied, the reduction was found to be better in calcium chloride melt, that too when alumina crucible was used as container of the melt.

Metastatic clear cell variant of hepatocellular carcinoma with an occult hepatic primary

Metastatic clear cell carcinomas are commonly seen in the kidney and lung. Clear cell variant of hepatocellular carci- noma is an uncommon tumour. Diagnosis is usually made by correlation of histopathology. tumour markers and im- munohistochemistry, especially HepPar 1. In this unusual case of metastatic clear cell carcinoma presenting as sister Mary Joseph's nodule, no primary evidence was observed radiologically in the liver, but the level of alfa fetoprotein was markedly elevated. Metastatic clear cell carcinoma of the liver with an occult hepatic primary was diagnosed by immunohistochemical profile of the tumour.

A ferrireductase encoded by six-transmembrane epithelial antigen of the prostate3(sTEAP3)has been implicated in the regulation of iron ***3 null mice exhibit congenital hypochromic anemia and in a rare case of human anemia has been recently reported due to sTEAP3 ***,there is little information on the prevelance of sTEAP3 mutations in humans and their physiological *** analysis in a total of 2338 Chinese random individuals showed mutations in sTEAP3,for a prevalence of 5.3%.We characterized the spectrum of these sTEAP3mutations and identified sixteen functional *** three most common mutations,***261Ter,***290His and ***51Asp,accounted for 72.6%of the *** the heterozygous sTEAP3 mutations resulted in either moderate or severe reductions in enzyme activities in vitro,they had little or no effects on red cell ***,when we scanned for sTEAP3 mutations in 867 subjects with-thalassemia,we were unable to document the adverse effects of sTEAP3 mutations on the-thalassemia *** findings imply that heterozygous sTEAP3 mutations are not deleterious in humans and suggest that lack of phenotypic changes is due to the presence of sufficient residual sTEAP3 activity or the presence of other ferrireductases in erythroid cells.
