The liver is commonly affected by metastatic ***,it is essential to detect and characterize liver metastases,assuming that patient management and prognosis rely on *** imaging techniques that allow non-invasive assessment of liver metastases include ultrasonography,computed tomography(CT),magnetic resonance imaging(MRI),positron emission tomography(PET)/CT,and PET/*** this paper,we review the imaging findings of liver metastases,focusing on each imaging modality’s advantages and potential *** also assess the importance of different imaging modalities for the management,follow-up,and therapy response of liver *** date,both CT and MRI are the most appropriate imaging methods for initial lesion detection,follow-up,and assessment of treatment *** MRI is frequently used as a problem-solving technique for liver lesions and has evolved substantially over the past decade,including hardware and software developments and specific intravenous contrast *** studies have shown that MRI performs better in small-sized metastases and moderate to severe liver steatosis *** state-of-the-art MRI shows a greater sensitivity for detecting and characterizing liver metastases,CT remains the chosen *** also present the controversial subject of the"economic implication"to use CT over MRI.

Mechanical properties characterization of different types of masonry infill walls

It is remarkable,the recent advances concerning the development of numerical modeling frameworks to simulate the infill panels'seismic ***,there is a lack of experimental data of their mechanical properties,which are of full importance to calibrate the numerical *** primary objective of this paper is to present an extensive experimental campaign of mechanical characterization tests of infill masonry walls made with three different types of masonry units:lightweight vertical hollow concrete blocks and hollow clay *** different types of experimental tests were carried out,namely:compression strength tests,diagonal tensile strength tests,and flexural strength tests parallel and perpendicular to the horizontal bed joints.A total amount of 80 tests were carried out and are reported in the present *** second objective of this study was to compare the mechanical properties of as-built and existing infill *** results presented and discussed herein,will be in terms of strain-stress curves and damages observed within the *** was observed a fragile behavior in the panels made with hollow clay horizontal bricks,without propagation of *** plaster increased the flexural strength by 57%.

RF performance evaluation of p-type nio-pocket based β-Ga_(2)O_(3)/ black phosphorous heterostructure MOSFET

The radio-frequency (RF) performance of the p-type nio-pocket based β-Ga_(2)O_(3)/black phosphorous heterostructureMOSFET has been evaluated. The key figure of merits (FOMs) for device performance evaluation include the transconductance(gm) gate dependent intrinsic-capacitances (Cgd and Cgs), cutoff frequency (fT), gain bandwidth (GBW) product and output-conductance(gd). Similarly, power-gain (Gp), power added efficiency (PAE), and output power (POUT) are also investigated for largesignalcontinuous-wave (CW) RF performance evaluation. The motive behind the study is to improve the β-Ga_(2)O_(3) MOS deviceperformance along with a reduction in power losses and device associated leakages. To show the applicability of the designeddevice in RF applications, its RF FOMs are analyzed. With the outline characteristics of the ultrathin black phosphorous layer belowthe β-Ga_(2)O_(3) channel region, the proposed device results in 1.09 times improvement in fT, with 0.7 times lower Cgs, and 3.27dB improved GP in comparison to the nio-GO MOSFET. The results indicate that the designed nio-GO/BP MOSFET has betterRF performance with improved power gain and low leakages.

Spin-Relaxation of nio Encapsulated Gd_2O_3 Core–Shell Nanoparticles

Nickel oxide encapsulated gadolinium oxide （Gd203~IiO） core-shell nanoparticles （Nps） has been synthesized by polyol method and analyzed by transmission electron microscopy. The particle size is found to vary from 25 to 35 nm. Raman spectra show the gadolinium oxide core material peaks are found to be diminished by the mass effect of the nio shell material. The dynamics of the magnetic moment has been studied with the help of temperature dependent electron paramagnetic resonance （EPR） spectroscopy. Peak-to-peak line width （AHpp） value of the EPR spectra increases with decreasing temperature. Temperature dependence of line width shows the dominance of spin-lattice relaxation in these systems, and it can be used as T~ contrast agent. Spin number estimated from EPR studies increases with the decrease of the temperature. The interfacial exchange coupling between the core and shell region is found to be existing at very low temperatures as determined by EPR studies in this non-magnetic/antiferromagnetic （NM/AFM） core/shell nanosystem. The effects of the temperature on the magnetic properties of the Gd203/nio core/shell NPs and the underlying mechanism have been discussed.

Optical Fiber Sensors： a Route From University of kent to Portugal

In this work the authors first summarily describe the main topics that were the subject of their post-graduate activity in fiber sensing at the Applied Optics Group of University of kent in the late 1980s and early 1990s. After their return to Porto, Portugal, the know-how acquired during their stay at kent and the collaboration paths that followed between the University of Porto and University of kent were instrumental in the start-up and progress of optical fiber sensing activity in Portugal. The main topics addressed in this field, the description of some of the relevant developments achieved in recent years, the present situation and the guidelines for the future research and development activity in Portugal in fiber sensing will be the core of this work.

Streptococcus pneumoniae and Herpes Simplex Virus-1 Central Nervous System Co-Infection

Co-infections of the central nervous system (CNS) caused by bacterial and viral pathogens are considered to be rare. Herpes simplex virus type-1 (HSV-1) reactivation following Streptococcus pneumoniae infection is well described but most cases are related to oral or cutaneous lesions or in respiratory samples. HSV-1 CNS reactivation after Streptococcus pneumoniae meningitis is a very rare event and may have significant morbidity and mortality. In this case report, we describe a 71-year-old female patient that presented with a history of abdominal pain and confusion/disorientation that had tonic-clonic seizures while in the Emergency Department. The diagnostic work-up confirmed CNS co-infection caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae and HSV-1. Of note, beyond age, the patient had no known risk factors for both entities and recovered fully after antibiotic and antiviral therapy. This case underlines that clinicians must be aware of CNS co-infection despite being a rare diagnosis. This should be suspected particularly in patients who present an unusual clinical course of CNS infection.

Cloning and characterization of gene-resistant analogs(RGAs)involved in rust(Puccinia psidii) resistance in Eucalyptus grandis

Disease-resistant genes play an important role in defending against a variety of pathogens and insect pests in plants. Most of the disease-resistant genes encode pro- teins with conserved leucine rich repeat and nucleotide binding site domains. In this study, we cloned and char- acterized gene-resistant analogs （RGAs） from Eucalyptus grandis using degenerate PCR, with primers specifically targeting these two domains. The amplified fragments were cloned into the pGEM-T vector and transformed into Escherichia coli. Among the 90 clones obtained, 13 were sequenced and compared with each other and with previ- ously identified gene-resistant diseases. A BLASTX search in GenBank revealed high similarities among the con- served domains of these cloned genes with RGA genes. Some clones, however, showed no significant similarity with DNA sequences in GenBank. Southern blotting ana- lysis identified several polymorphic RFLP loci between distinct genotypes. However, none of them co-segregated with the Puccinia psidii Winter resistance gene 1 （Ppr1） in a population study.
