Living photovoltaics are microbial electrochemical devices that use whole cell–electrode interactions to convert solar energy to *** bottleneck in these technologies is the limited electron transfer between the microbe and the electrode *** study focuses on enhancing this transfer by engineering a polydopamine(PDA)coating on the outer membrane of the photosynthetic microbe Synechocystis *** coating provides a conductive nanoparticle shell to increase electrode adhesion and improve microbial charge extraction.A combination of scanning electron microscopy(SEM),transmission electron microscopy(TEM),UV–Vis absorption,and Raman spectroscopy measurements were used to characterize the nanoparticle shell under various synthesis *** cell viability and activity were further assessed through oxygen evolution,growth curve,and confocal fluorescence microscopy *** results show sustained cell growth and detectable PDA surface coverage under slightly alkaline conditions(pH 7.5)and at low initial dopamine(DA)concentrations(1 mM).The exoelectrogenicity of the cells prepared under these conditions was also characterized through cyclic voltammetry(CV)and chronoamperometry(CA).The measurements show a three-fold enhancement in the photocurrent at an applied bias of 0.3 V(***/AgCl[3 M kCl])compared to non-coated *** study thus lays the framework for engineering the next generation of living photovoltaics with improved performances using biosynthetic electrodes.

The surface-initiated Rolling Contact Fatigue(RCF)including pitting and micro-pitting is one of the key issues affecting the reliability of tribological components such as gears and bearings used in various *** this work,a surface-initiated crack Finite Element(FE)model which considers the effect of lubricant on crack faces was developed to investigate surface-initiated RCF using an automatic crack propagating Python *** lubricating states,initial crack parameters and loading conditions were simulated to analyze the evolution of crack propagation and the Stress Intensity Factors(SIFs).The RCF crack propagation path and life were predicted by employing the Maximum Tangential Stress(MTS)criterion coupled with the Paris’s law.A typical RCF failure is predicted in the numerical *** reveal that the lubricating pressurization dominates the surface-initiated *** addition,the initial crack angle has a significant effect on the RCF crack propagation path and the fatigue life.

Clipping and coiling are currently the two alternatives in treatment of ruptured cerebral aneurysms. In spite of some meritorious analysis, further discussion is helpful to understand the actual state of art. Retreatment and rebleeding rates clearly favors clipping, although short-term functional outcome seems to be beneficial for clipping, while this different is not such if we perform the comparison at a longer follow up. Longterm follow ups and cost analysis are mandatory to have a clear view of the current picture in treatment of subarachnoid hemorrhage. Treatment strategy should be made by a multi-disciplinary team in accredited centers with proficient experience in both techniques.

Analysis of a load application point in spline coupling teeth

The objective of this paper is to investigate the position of the resultant force in involute spline coupling teeth due to the contact pressure distribution for both ideal and misaligned conditions. In general, spline coupling teeth are in contact all along the involute profile and the load is far from uniform along the contact line. Theoretical models available in publications consider the resultant contact force as it is applied at the pitch diameter, and this study aims to evaluate the error introduced within the confines of a common approximation environment. This analysis is carried out through using finite element method （FEM） models, considering spline couplings in both ideal and misaligned conditions. Results show that the differences between the load application diameter and pitch diameter are not very obvious in both ideal and misaligned conditions; however, this ap- proximation becomes more important for the calculation of the tooth stiffness.

Flow and heat transfer behaviour of nanofluids in microchannels

Flow and heat transfer of aqueous based silica and alumina nanofluids in microchannels were experimentally investigated. The measured friction factors were higher than conventional model predictions at low Reynolds numbers particularly with high nanoparticle concentrations. A decrease in the friction factor was observed with increasing Reynolds number, possibly due to the augmentation of nanoparticle aggregate shape arising from fluid shear and alteration of local nanoparticle concentration and nanofluid viscosity. Augmentation of the silica nanoparticle morphology by fluid shear may also have affected the friction factor due to possible formation of a core/shell structure of the particles. Measured thermal conductivities of the silica nanofluids were in approximate agreement with the Maxwell-Crosser model, whereas the alumina nanofluids only showed slight enhancements. Enhanced convective heat transfer was observed for both nanofluids, relative to their base fluids(water), at low particle concentrations. Heat transfer enhancement increased with increasing Reynolds number and microchannel hydraulic diameter. However, the majority of experiments showed a larger increase in pumping power requirements relative to heat transfer enhancements, which may hinder the industrial uptake of the nanofluids, particularly in confined environments, such as Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems(MEMS).

Intrahepatic vascular changes in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: potential role of insulin-resistance and endothelial dysfunction

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of several clinical conditions characterized by insulin-resistance and high cardiovascular risk. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is the liver expression of the metabolic syndrome, and insulin resistance can be a frequent comorbidity in several chronic liver diseases, in particular hepatitis C virus infection and/or cirrhosis. Several studies have demonstrated that insulin action is not only relevant for glucose control, but also for vascular homeostasis. Insulin regulates nitric oxide production, which mediates to a large degree the vasodilating, antiinflammatory and antithrombotic properties of a healthy endothelium, guaranteeing organ perfusion. The effects of insulin on the liver microvasculature and the effects of IR on sinusoidal endothelial cells have been studied in animal models of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The hypotheses derived from these studies and the potential translation of these results into humans are critically discussed in this review.

Clinical expression of insulin resistance in hepatitis C and B virus-related chronic hepatitis:Differences and similarities

AIM： To investigate the prevalence of the clinical pa- rameters of insulin resistance and diabetes in patients affected by chronic hepatitis C （CHC） or chronic hepa- titis B （CHB）. METHODS： We retrospectively evaluated 852 consec- utive patients （726 CHC and 126 CriB） who had under- gone liver biopsy. We recorded age, sex, ALT, type 2 diabetes and/or metabolic syndrome （MS）, body mass index （BMI）, and apparent disease duration （ADD）. RESULTS： Age, ADD, BMI, prevalence of MS and diabetes in patients with mild/moderate liver fibrosis were significantly higher in CHC. However, the degree of steatosis and liver fibrosis evaluated in liver biop- sies did not differ between CHC and CHB patients. At multivariate analysis, age, sex, BMI, ALT and diabetes were independent risk factors for liver fibrosis in CHC, whereas only age was related to liver fibrosis in CHB. We also evaluated the association between significant steatosis （〉 30%） and age, sex, BMI, diabetes, MS and liver fibrosis. Diabetes, BMI and liver fibrosis were associated with steatosis 〉 30% in CHC, whereas only age and BMI were related to steatosis in CriB. CONCLUSION： These data may indicate that hepatitis C virus infection is a risk factor for insulin resistance.

The features of peritoneal metastases from gastric cancer

Peritoneal Carcinomatosis(PC)from metastasization of Gastric Cancer(GC),either present at first diagnosis of GC or as recurrence,is considered a fatal disease with no hope of definitive *** newer agents like S1 and docetaxel have shown some promise,the median overall survival with the current first line chemotherapy is only 8 to 14 months,and is not greatly improved by adding targeted therapy.A multi-modal approach with cytoreductive surgery(CRS)associated with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy(HIPEC)has been developed along the last two decades in order to tackle this ***’s an aggressive,combined treatment still under *** coming from Europe and Far East reported long-term survival with 5-year survival rates up to nearly 25%in case of complete ***/adjuvant setting is the most evidence-based indication for HIPEC in advanced-stage GC patients without PC,in order to prevent peritoneal recurrence and to improve overall *** rationale for immuno treatment in patients with gastric PC is strong.A randomized phase II study,combining complete CRS with intraperitoneal catumaxomab is *** detection of free peritoneal cancer cells is the more realistic and practical way for the identification of patients at risk of carcinomatosis after *** routine use of techniques of molecular detection in peritoneal washing appears to be the more sensitive *** patients are potential candidate for multimodal and locoregional treatments in order to prevent the peritoneal recurrence.
