elucidating regulatory processes of intense physical activity by multi-omics analysis

Background:Physiological and biochemical processes across tissues of the body are regulated in response to the high demands of intense physical activity in several occupations,such as firefighting,law enforcement,military,and sports.A better understanding of such processes can ultimately help improve human performance and prevent illnesses in the work ***:To study regulatory processes in intense physical activity simulating real-life conditions,we performed a multi-omics analysis of 3 biofluids(blood plasma,urine,and saliva)collected from 11 wildland firefighters before and after a 45 min,intense exercise *** profiles ***-exercise were compared by Student’s t-test followed by pathway analysis and comparison between the different omics ***:Our multi-omics analysis identified and quantified 3835 proteins,730 lipids and 182 metabolites combining the 3 different types of *** blood plasma analysis revealed signatures of tissue damage and acute repair response accompanied by enhanced carbon metabolism to meet energy *** urine analysis showed a strong,concomitant regulation of 6 out of 8 identified proteins from the renin-angiotensin system supporting increased excretion of catabolites,reabsorption of nutrients and maintenance of fluid *** saliva,we observed a decrease in 3 pro-inflammatory cytokines and an increase in 8 antimicrobial peptides.A systematic literature review identified 6 papers that support an altered susceptibility to respiratory ***:This study shows simultaneous regulatory signatures in biofluids indicative of homeostatic maintenance during intense physical activity with possible effects on increased infection susceptibility,suggesting that caution against respiratory diseases could benefit workers on highly physical demanding jobs.

One-pot and One-step Cu(0)-mediated Reversible-Deactivation Radical Polymerization of N-Isopropylacrylamide(NIPAM) in Water

Copper(0)-mediated reversible-deactivation radical polymerization(Cu(0)-mediated RDRP) of the water-soluble monomer Nisopropylacrylamide(NIPAM) has been challenging with the problems of high dispersity, poor control over the molecular weights(MWs) or complex or multi reaction steps, etc. In this work, we report the well-controlled polymerization of NIPAM in water via a facile one-pot and one-step Cu(0)-mediated RDRP. The results of this approach show that the key for kicking off the Cu(0)-mediated NIPAM RDRPs is to ensure sufficient Cu~I at the very beginning, and the key to achieve a well-controlled chain growth is to provide adequate deactivation strength during the polymerization process. For NIPAM, which has a high propagation rate constant, the deactivation control can be effectively enhanced by extra adding deactivator(i.e., Cu~II) to the system. Moreover, a low reaction temperature(4 ℃) is necessary in the controlled synthesis of higher MW poly(Nisopropylacrylamide)(PNIPAM) to avoid the compromise in control caused by the phase transition from its lower critical solution temperature(LCST). Through this new kinetically controlled strategy, PNIPAMs with well-defined structure, narrow molecular weight distributions(MWDs) and varied MWs were successfully achieved.

System Assimilation of e-Skills in Tertiary Institutions to empower Graduates in South Africa

The value of system assimilation is to improve working relationships between tutors and learners while increasing workflow efficiency among tertiary institutions with low operational costs. e-skills could be described as electronic education development, to assist ICT professionals to reach their future career goals and aim to help users boost their ICT skills. In a society that is expanding, it is also a crucial issue to take into account. Researchers have turned their attention to this topic because of its significance and contribution to the empowerment of graduates in digital education. Many scholars have proposed many methods for integrating e-skills into society with impressive results, but the rising rate of graduate unemployment in South Africa is gradually becoming a big worry in our society. A model based on Activity Theory (AT) and e-skills will be developed in our tertiary institution to equip graduates with skills that will increase their employability and provide more individualized work opportunities as part of this study’s effort to solve this issue. With the use of the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) and Cronbach’s Alpha for validity and reliability testing, the study will create an experimental performance to assess the approach taken to measure e-skills in tertiary institutions to empower graduates in South Africa. The study established that system development and e-skilled models for tertiary institutions are growing gradually, especially in South African institutions, that empower graduates with profitable employability with experiences to improve work operation in the industries. In conclusion, system development and e-skills are very demanding but important to empower graduate employability to determine competency in the professional workforce.

Subacute fulminant hepatic failure with intermittent fever

BACkGROUND: Viral hepatitis B accounts for over 80% of acute hepatic failures in China and the patients die mainly of its complications. A patient with hepatic failure and fever is not uncommon, whereas repeated fever is rare. MeTHODS: A 32-year-old female was diagnosed with subacute hepatic failure and hepatitis B viral infection because of hyperbilirubinemia, coagulopathy, hepatic encephalopathy, serum anti-HBs-positive without hepatitis B vaccination, and typical intrahepatic pathological features of chronic hepatitis B. Plasma exchange was administered twice and she awoke with hyperbilirubinemia and discontinuous fever. ReSULTS: Urethritis was confirmed and medication-induced fever and/or spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (Gram-negative bacillus infection) was suspected. The patient was treated with antibiotics, steroids and a Chinese herbal medicine, matrine, for three months and she recovered. CONCLUSION: The survival rate of patients with hepatic failure might be improved with comprehensive supporting measures and appropriate, timely management of complications.

Routine colonic endoscopic evaluation following resolution of acute diverticulitis:Is it necessary?

Diverticular disease incidence is increasing up to 65% by age 85 in industrialized nations,low fiber diets,and in younger and obese ***-five percent of patients with diverticulosis will develop acute *** imposes a significant burden on healthcare systems,resulting in greater than 300000 admissions per year with an estimated annual cost of $3 billion *** computed tomography(CT) is the diagnostic study of choice,with a sensitivity and specificity greater than 95%.Unfortunately,similar CT findings can be present in colonic neoplasia,especially when perforated or *** prompted professional societies such as the American Society of Colon Rectal Surgeons to recommend patients undergo routine colonoscopy after an episode of acute diverticulitis to rule out ***,the data supporting routine colonoscopy after acute diverticulitis is sparse and based small cohort studies utilizing outdated *** any patient with an indication for a colonoscopy should undergo appropriate endoscopic evaluation,in the era of widespread use of high-resolution computed tomography,routine colonic endoscopic evaluation following resolution of acute uncomplicated diverticulitis poses additional costs,comes with inherent risks,and may require further *** this manuscript,we review the current data related to this recommendation.

A classical equation that accounts for observations of non-Arrhenius and cryogenic grain boundary migration

Observations of microstructural coarsening at cryogenic temperatures,as well as numerous simulations of grain boundary motion that show faster migration at low temperature than at high temperature,have been troubling because they do not follow the expected Arrhenius *** work demonstrates that classical equations,that are not simplified,account for all these oddities and demonstrate that non-Arrhenius behavior can emerge from thermally activated *** to this classical model,this occurs when the intrinsic barrier energies of the processes become small,allowing activation at cryogenic *** thermal energy then allows the low energy process to proceed in reverse,so increasing temperature only serves to frustrate the forward *** classical form is shown to reconcile and describe a variety of diverse grain boundary migration observations.

Rodents and weeds are important pests to rice crops in Southeast *** interaction between these 2 major pests is poorly *** temperate cereal systems,seeds of grass weeds can be an important food source for rodents and weed cover along crop margins provides important refuge for *** 2012 and 2013,a replicated study(n=4)in Bago,Myanmar compared 4 treatments(rodents and weeds;no rodents and weeds;rodents and no weeds;no rodents and no weeds)each of 0.25 ha in transplanted *** were managed with hand weeding in the wet season,and hand weeding and herbicides in the dry *** fences were installed to exclude *** examined the weed cover and relative abundance of weed species,rodent damage,rodent population dynamics and rice yield loss caused by rodents and *** dominant rodent species was Bandicota *** the dry season,Cyperus difformis was dominant at the tillering stage and echinochloa crus-galli was the dominant weed species at the booting *** the wet season ***-galli was a dominant weed throughout the *** by rodents was higher in the dry *** were larger economic benefits for best weed management and effective rodent control in the dry season(258 US$/ha)than in the wet season(30 US$/ha).Concurrent control of weeds in and around rice fields combined with coordinated community trapping of rodents during the early tillering stage and ripening stage of rice are recommended management options.

Primary mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma of the liver: A report of two cases and review of the literature

Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue(MALT) lymphoma of the liver is a very rare condition and thus the diag-nosis may be challeng-ing-. The clinical presentation is usually variable, rang-ing- from minimal clinical symptoms to severe end stag-e liver disease. In this paper, we describe the clinicopatholog-ic finding-s in two cases of primary hepatic MALT lymphoma. One case is an 80-year-old female with no underlying- chronic liver disease and the second case is a 30-year-old female with autoimmune hepatitis complicated by MALT lymphoma. In both specimens, there was diffuse infiltration of atypical B-lymphocytes that were positive for CD20 and CD79 a, but neg-ative for CD5, CD43 and CD10. There were occasional lymphoepithelial lesions involving- the hepatocytes or bile ducts. Polymerase chain reaction analysis showed monoclonal immunog-lobulin heavy chain g-ene rearrang-ement in both cases. The first case was treated with surg-ery but developed pulmonary recurrence a year after complete resection but went into remission following- treatment with rituximab. A second recurrence occurred in the rig-ht parotid g-land 7 years later, which was treated with idelalisib. The second case was effectively treated with rituximab. To our knowledg-e, the second case is the first reported case linked to autoimmune hepatitis.
