＜正＞We report new Archaean carbonaceous microstructures from ca. 3.4 Ga sedimentary rocks in the Pilbara Craton, Western Australia. Specifically, we have discovered a similar association of microstructures of various morphological types in carbonaceous black cherts at Mount Goldsworthy and Mount Grant, 100km east of Port Hedland. The cherts are closely associated with evaporites and the associations are inter-bedded with silicified coarse- to fine-grained clastic rocks and laminated chert. The sedimentary succession is assumed to have deposited at the continental margin setting. Significant supply of detritus from granitoid rocks is also recently suggested by trace element geochemistry. The mode of occurrence and sedimentary petrology indicate a primary sedimentary origin and low metamorphic grade （＜ greenschist facies） for the black cherts. Traceelement data including rare-earth elements show some contribution of hydrothermal components, suggesting that the chert was deposited in a closed to semi-closed, coastal basin into which hydrothermal fluids discharged intermittently.

Can Evidence-based Policy Contribute to Correcting Overreaction？--Considering Democracy and Rationalized Policy Making

This paper focuses on evidence-based policy-making and democracy, along with political overreaction. In many countries, evidence-based policy-making is a prominent aspect of administration and aims to rationalize the policy-making process. Moreover, democracy is subject to many critiques nowadays because it cannot guaxmatee good public policy-making. Under such circumstances, some researchers have suggested that democracy should be limited, especially in public policy-making processes. There axe many critiques of such arguments because they ignore the participation that is necessary for democracy. There is some hope that evidence-based policy-making can teach laypersons using evidence. However, evidence is too difficult to understand for many laypersons. In this paper, the author suggests limited participatory analysis to support evidence-based policy. In this system, only knowledge holders would be allowed to participate. If evidence-based policy meant that the formulation of policy relied only on narrower experts, it would not make a positive contribution. However, if evidence-based policy were to adopt a participatory policy-creation process, it would offer greater potential

In this paper, a data-driven design method of a feedback gain for loop shaping is proposed for a single input plant. This method can be applied to the tuning of a static feedback gain and also that of the output matrix of a dynamical controller. Constraints on the feedback gain are represented by linear matrix inequalities based on the unfalsified concept using many responses obtained by filtering a plant *** feedback gain is a solution of a linear matrix inequality problem, where the integral gain of the loop transfer function is maximized subject to the constraints. Numerical examples demonstrate the usefulness.

Efficacy and safety of telaprevir- and simeprevir-based triple therapies for older patients with chronic hepatitis C

AIMTo evaluate and compare the efficacy and safety of telaprevir (TVR)-and simeprevir (SMV)-based triple therapies in elderly patients, specifically patients aged 66 years or older. METHODSThe present study enrolled 112 and 76 Japanese patients with chronic hepatitis C virus genotype 1b infection who were treated with a 12-wk TVR-based or SMV-based triple therapy, respectively, followed by a dual therapy that included pegylated interferon α and ribavirin (RBV) for 12 wk. The patients were categorized into two groups according to age as follows: A younger group of patients aged ≤ 65 years old and an older group of patients aged > 65 years old. Among the patients treated with TVR-based triple therapy, 34 patients were included in the older group. The median ages were 56 years (range: 28-65 years) in the younger group and 69 years (range: 66-81 years) in the older group. Among the patients treated with SMV-based triple therapy, 39 patients were included in the older group. The median ages were 59 years (range: 36-65 years) in the younger group and 71 years (range: 66-86 years) in the older group. The clinical, biochemical and virological data were analyzed before and during treatment. RESULTSAmong the patients treated with the TVR-based triple therapy, no significant difference in the sustained virological response (SVR) was found between the younger (80.8%) and older (88.2%) groups. The SVR rates for patients with the interleukin 28B (IL28B) (rs8099917) TG/GG-genotypes (73.9% and 60.0% in the younger and older groups, respectively) were significantly lower than for patients with the IL28B TT-genotype (86.3% and 92.9%, respectively). The cumulative exposure to RBV for the entire 24-wk treatment period (as a percentage of the target dose) was significantly higher in the younger group than in the older group (91.7% vs 66.7%, respectively, P vs 81.9%, respectively). Contrast-enhanced ultrasonographic findings of serum amyloid A-positive hepatocellular neoplasm: Does hepatocellular adenoma arise in cirrhotic liver?

Hepatocellular adenoma(HCA) was recently classified into four pathological subtypes. There have been few studies describing the findings of contrast-enhanced ultrasonography(CEUS) of each type. Our case concerns a 78-year-old man who had undergone routine medical check-ups for hepatitis C for 11 years. Abdominal ultrasonography showed a 28 mm, hypo-echoic mass in the segment 4 of the liver. His integrating amount of drinking was 670 kg convert into ethanol. CEUS with Sonazoid demonstrated mild uniform hypo-enhancement with inflow of microbubbles from the periphery of the tumor in the arterial phase, and heterogeneously hypo-enhancement in the post vascular phase. Because the mass increased in size within 3 mo, a well differentiated hepatocellular carcinoma was suspected, and hepatic resection was performed. Microscopic findings showed homogeneous cell proliferation with low grade atypia, infiltration of inflammatory cells, ductular reactions, fatty deposit in part, and sinusoidal dilation. Immunohistochemistry revealed geographic positive for serum amyloid A(SAA), focal positive for glutaminesynthetase, diffuse and strong positive for C-reactive protein, and positive for liver-type fatty acid binding protein. These pathological features corresponded to that of an inflammatory HCA. However, we could not make a clear diagnosis, because HCAs were defined as not to arise in cirrhotic liver. Finally, this tumor was diagnosed as a SAA positive hepatocellular neoplasm.

Improving the Power Generation Performance of a Solar Tower Using Thermal Updraft Wind

The purpose of this study is to improve the efficiency of the power generation system of a solar tower using fluid dynamics. The power generation system of a solar tower can be designed and constructed at relatively low cost. However, the energy output tends to be low for its physical size compared with other renewable energy production systems. The technical and scientific improvement of these types of generation systems has lost its momentum since the shutdown of the wellknown Spanish pilot plant “Manzanares Solar Chimney” in 1989, although it still has the potential to play a role in renewable energy in the future. We have focused on the tower component of the system to seek possible enhancements of the power output of the internal turbine. As a result of our fluid dynamic shape optimization, a diffuser-shaped tower was employed to increase the internal flow speed of a scaled model. The results show a remarkable improvement in the power output of the internal wind turbine.

Harpagoside, which is one main iridoid constituent of the dried roots of Scrophularia ningpoensis Hemsl., was biotransformated by bacteria isolated from human feeal flora a.d three metabolites were obtained. The structures of the metabolites, including two new alkaloids, named bar'Pagometabolins Ⅰ (l) and Ⅱ (2), and a known alkaloid acubinine B(3), were identified by chemical methods and the spectroscopic evidences.

A 38-year-old woman was referred to our institution due to epigastralgia. She presented with obstructive jaundice and eosinophilia. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography showed diffuse narrowing from the distal common bile duct to the bifurcation of the hepatic ducts. An endoscopic plastic biliary stent was inserted; the specimen obtained from the common bile duct wall revealed dense infiltration by eosinophils. Treatment was started with prednisolone 60 mg daily. The patient's biliary stenosis and eosinophilia gradually improved. Eosinophilic infiltration in the lungs or stomach is relatively common, but it is rare in the common bile duct. Most of the reported cases of eosinophilic cholangitis presented with eosinophilia; our patient's eosinophil count was over 1000/mm3. Since our patient had allergies to pollen and house dust, a relationship between the allergies and the eosinophilic cholangitis was suspected, but no cause was identified.
