Single-Proton Pickup Reaction of the Halo Nucleus ^6He on a ^9Be Target at 25 MeV/nucleon

The inclusive differential cross sections of the ^7 Li nucleus in a reaction induced by ^6He on a ^9Be target are measured at an incident energy of 25 MeV/nucleon. Finite-range distorted-wave Born approximation calculations suggest that these ^7 Li particles are formed in a direct single-proton pickup reaction ^9Be（^6He,^7 Li）^8Li. The experimental data can be well reproduced by taking into account of the contributions of both the ground states and the first excited states of ^7Li and ^8Li.

In Japan, 18.1% of the population known as baby-boomers will become the late-stage elderly in 2025, thereby needing a foundation to support this change. The Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare is promoting the development of a regional comprehensive system allowing the elderly to continue living in their familiar surroundings. However, a care shortage is inevitable unless elders are able to age in good health, regardless of the system’s level of enhancement. This study aims to review the literature on active aging, clarify trends in clinical operations undertakings and research in Japan, and consider relevant research issues. After combining the search results of “active aging” and “healthy life expectancy,” we used a text mining technique to analyze the abstracts of 120 original articles and 213 reviews, commentaries, and features. Eight categories were extracted from the original articles: health statistics, gender, age, etc. From the reviews, commentaries, and features, 16 categories were extracted: orientation, disease, and living, etc. Cerebrovascular disease and osteoporosis were the most common diseases covered in the original articles;there has been a substantial amount of research on “active aging” and “healthy life expectancy” because they can easily lead to being bedridden and to a decrease in QOL. In the reviews, commentaries, and features, lifestyle-related diseases and menopause rather than cerebrovascular disease and osteoporosis, were extracted. The categorical differences found in the original articles may be due to the possibility that Japanese researchers are publishing their research abroad rather than in Japan or they submit research on topics that are guaranteed to be published at home or abroad. Little research has been conducted using the terms, “active aging” and “healthy life expectancy,” evidenced by the small number of studies generated. Purpose: Relationship between CT or MR images and histological findings, especially vascularity, has not been adequately evaluated. The purpose of this study was to investigate correlation between contrast enhancement on CT and MRI and histological findings in posterior mediastinal ganglioneuromas. Materials and Methods: Contrast-enhanced (CE) CT (n = 11) and CE MRI (n = 5) of 12 patients with ganglioneuroma were reviewed. The attenuation, signal intensity, and dynamic enhancement pattern of the tumors were evaluated. The vascularity was histologically evaluated by the numbers of vessels. Results: Enhancement on CE-CT was none, mild, moderate, and high enhancement in 5 (45%), 2 (18%), 3 (27%), and 1 (9%) of the 11 lesions, respectively. Dynamic MRI showed mild, moderate and high enhancement in 3 (60%), 1 (20%) and 1 (20%) cases, respectively. The level of contrast enhancement correlated well only with the number of capillary vessels (r = 0.79, P = 0.0037). Conclusion: The posterior mediastinal ganglioneuromas sometimes show insufficient enhancement particularly on CE-CT. The level of enhancement might correlate with the amount of capillary vessels.

Synthesis and Fluorescence Quantum Yield of Gd<sub>1-x</sub>Eu<sub>x</sub>OOH Crystals

Eu3+-doped gadolinium oxyhydroxide Gd1-xEuxOOH crystals were synthesized by the flux method. The X-ray diffraction data for the crystals were well refined assuming a monoclinic structure with the P21/m space group. Gd1-xEuxOOH (x ≤ 0.2) crystals showed strong red emission, and the highest fluorescence quantum yield (Φf) was 0.27, obtained for x = 0.10. Φf decreased rapidly as the Eu3+ content x increased above 0.2, owing to concentration quenching. Analysis with a percolation model indicated three-dimensional energy transfer between the Eu3+ ions.

The purpose of this research was to investigate occupational stress and its related factors among university teachers in Japan. Questionnaire surveys were mailed to 924 university teachers in Japan with a response rate of 43.8%, N = 405. The General Health Questionnaire 28 (GHQ-28), Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), short Japanese version of brief Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced (COPE) and the Work Situation Questionnaires (WSQ) developed by the authors were administered to participants. Results indicated that university teachers had some mental health problems in relation to gender, professional position, conditions of taking paid leave, job satisfaction, job control, social support, and coping skills. These findings provide evidence that in order to improve the mental health of university, teachers need to take their paid leave freely. It is important to keep high their job satisfaction levels, job control levels, and social support. The results also indicated that the ineffective coping styles lead to poor mental health. In addition, the findings identified the necessity for support of female teachers and younger lecturers, who had a greater tendency toward poor mental health.

Pemphigus is an autoimmune bullous disease observed with lesions in the skin and mucosa. Pemphigus is classified by antibodies against desmogleins, which is cadherin type intercellular adhesion factors involved in adhesion between epidermal cells. In this case, because erosion of the oral mucosa was the primary symptom, a relationship with membrane-dominant pemphigus vulgaris was strongly suspected. And in terms of histopathology, findings not conflicted with pemphigus vulgaris were observed, but given all these different findings, the results did not correspond with bullous pemphigoid in clinical findings, and with pemphigus foliaceus and pemphigus vulgaris in various testing results, leading us to believe this represented a very rare case. We started oral health care, and when application of steroid ointment to the entire surface of the mucosa was continued, symptoms disappeared within approximately 2 months. In this case, relapse has not yet occurred and periodic follow-up was continued.

Background/Aims: Liver resection represents the treatment of choice for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) arising in well-compensated cirrhosis. Gene expression of the multifunctional cytokine, Oncostatin M (OSM), stimulates liver regeneration and adenoviral vector expressing OSM (AdOSM) allows a persistent expression of the gene. The aim of this study is to evaluate the benefits of the preoperative injection of AdOSM to the remnant lobes to regenerate the liver. Methods: A 70% partial hepatectomy was performed in dimethylnitrosamine-administrated cirrhotic rats with a preoperative injection of AdOSM, adenoviral vector carrying β-galactosidase (AdLacZ), or phosphate-buffered saline (PBS). The morphologic, histologic, and biochemical changes in the remnant liver and survival rates were then assessed. Results: Portal injection with clamping the portal branches of the resected lobes for 5 min made it possible to effectively transduce the adenoviral vector into the remnant lobes. The ratio of the remnant liver weight/body weight (%) was 2.3 ± 0.5 in the AdOSM group, 1.1 ± 0.3 in the AdLacZ group (p < 0.001), and 1.6 ± 0.4 in the PBS group (p = 0.02). The fibrous ratio (%) was 21.3 ± 4.6 in the AdOSM group and 35.2 ± 4.5 in the AdLacZ group on day 4 after hepatectomy and fibrous status was significantly decreased in the AdOSM group (p = 0.02). Serum hyaluronic acid which is the indicator of liver fibrosis was 215 ± 141 ng/mL in the AdOSM group and 1963 ± 1225 ng/mL in the AdLacZ group (p = 0.03). Conclusions: The OSM gene therapy may increase the possibility of hepatectomy in a cirrhotic liver by improving fibrosis, hepatic function, and hepatocyte regeneration.
