Comparison of Threshold Power between Methylene Blue Degradation and kI Oxidation Reaction Using Ultrasound

Ultrasound is used in various chemical reaction processes, and these reactions are influenced by ultrasonic frequency. A threshold power is required for the ultrasonic degradation reaction and oxidation reaction caused by hydroxyl radicals, and the cavitation threshold power is also influenced by frequency generally. In this study, the effects of frequency on the threshold power of methylene blue degradation and kI oxidation were investigated in the range between 22.8 kHz and 1640 kHz. The threshold power of kI oxidation reaction increased with increasing frequency. This phenomenon well agrees with previous study, and it is revealed that the generation of I-3?ion is caused by oxidation reaction of Iˉ ions with hydroxyl radicals. On the other hand, the threshold power of methylene blue degradation reaction was not affected by frequency. The ultrasonic degradation of methylene blue is considered to be caused by hydroxyl radicals, and there is a linear relationship between degradation rate constant and sonochemical efficiency value. However, it is guessed that the degradation of methylene blue is occurred inside cavitation bubble by pyrolysis at high frequency regions.

Plating on the plastic is one of the important technologies to decorate exterior automotive parts and electronic devices. Conventionally, etching solution contained carcinogen hexavalent chromium obtained high adhesion strength between metal film and plastic surface to decorative the plating. On the other hand, health damage and environmental pollution from waste etching solution are occurring. For the above reasons, development of chromium free pretreatment is an urgent problem to solve this issue. In this study, we concentrated the environmentally friendly surface modification process in which atmospheric UV treatment was used to investigate effect of surface morphology and state on the ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) plastic. As a result, morphology of ABS surface was kept smooth after UV irradiation treatment. The conversion from hydrophobic to hydrophilic on the ABS surface state was confirmed by contact angle test and FT-IR spectra. Moreover, it was confirmed that appropriate amount of oxidation was necessary for metal plating on the ABS plastic, in order to obtain high adhesion strength between metal film and plastics surface.

Infiltration of Mould from Crawl Space under the Prefabricated Bathroom

The indoor mould concentration depends not only on the outdoor mould source but also on the indoor mould source. The mould source is not only on the interior surface but also in the concealed spaces: a crawl space, a beam space, a wall cavity etc. Most detached houses in Japan have crawl spaces under the first floor. The humidity is high from spring to autumn in crawl spaces. Therefore the concentration of mould spore is very high in most crawl spaces. Prefabricated bathrooms called “bath-units” are installed in most Japanese houses. The authors showed in the previous studies that there are infiltration routes between bath-units and walls that the routes may lead chemical compounds from crawl space to indoor space. In this study, the influence of mould infiltration from crawl space upon indoor mould concentration is investigated using a test house which consists of a lavatory and a bathroom. The structure of the house is wooden post-and-beam. The house is airtight and insulated according to the latest building code for save energy. The mould concentrations were measured in the crawl space and the indoor spaces continuously using a mould multi-sampling system with a pump, valves and impingers. Before the measurements, the indoor mould concentration was made low using an air cleaner. The air flow rates were measured using tracer gases. After the exhaust fan was switched on, the mould concentration increased. The number of infiltrated mould was calculated using air flow rates and mould concentrations. The results showed that mould infiltration ratio may be one of the important indicators of indoor air quality.

Goals and Background: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease characterized by dense infiltration of lymphocytes, plasma cells, neutrophils, and monocyte-macrophages into the colonic mucosa. Leukocytapheresis is a procedure for selectively removing white blood cells from withdrawn blood. It i s used for the treatment of several autoimmune diseases. This study was performe d to evaluate the effectiveness of leukocytapheresis for inducing and maintainin g remission in corticosteroid-resistant UC, as compared with corticosteroid res ponsive UC. Study: Forty-five patients with active UC who were treated with a d ose of 1 mg/kg per day or more of prednisolone given systemically for at least 2 weeks were evaluated. Twenty patients (6 males, 14 females) in whom improvement was induced only by high doses of prednisolone were allocated as the corticoste roid-responsive group. The other 25 patients (11 males, 14 females) who did not respond to the above-mentioned dose of prednisolone therapy were allocated as the corticosteroid-resistant group and received leukocytapheresis therapy once a week for 5 weeks. Of patients who had a remission, the corticosteroid-respons ive group continued to have the conventional therapy and the corticosteroid-res istant group were given leukocytapheresis once every 4 weeks for at least 2 year s as maintenance therapy. Results: Remission was induced by 5 weeks of leukocyta pheresis in 23 of the 25 (92%) patients with corticosteroid-resistant active U C. The number of days required to achieve remission of UC was fewer in patients who received leukocytapheresis than in those who did not. Follow-up study of th e patients who had remission showed similar relapse rates at 2 years in the pati ents who received leukocytapheresis and those given high doses of prednisolone a lone. Conclusions: Leukocytapheresis is an effective treatment of acute corticos teroid-resistant UC but does not prevent the recurrence of UC.

Study on the Structure of Peroxide Cross-Linked Polyethylene Pipes with Several Stabilizers

This study is devoted to testing the single droplet combustion of a diesel light oil (LO) and a light cycle oil (LCO). The testswere carried out in an atmospheric hot chamber preset at a temperature of 1173 k. A quartz fiber was used to suspend the oildroplet. The resultS showed that the LCO droplet had higher soot yield, whereas both the LCO and LO droplets did not haveobvious coke formation. Microexplosions were obvious during the combustion but the LO droplets were more apt tomicroexplode. The ignition delay was relatively shorter for the LCO droplet but the flame 1ifetime and droplet lifetime werenearly the same for the droplets of both the oils (flame lifetime being the time between ignition and extinction, and dropletlifetime being the sum of ignition delay and flame lifetime). The disruptive burning more or less complicated the time-seriesvariations of droplet size (d). A linear region, however, can still be identified on the curve dvs. t to show the overallchanges of droplet size with burning time (t). This allowcd an apparent burning rate constant to be defined according to thed-law. The burning rate constant varied with the initial droplet diameter (d), which caused the relative droplet size, (d/d),to be normalized by the relative time t/d (n=1.l0). Further analysis showed that this normalization Tesulted from therespective unification of the unsteady and quasi-steady burning phases of different droplets. These results were alsocorroborated by burning an oil blend of LO and LCO at volume fractions of 50% in the same conditions.

Cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) pipes used in hot water supply are required for high mechanical strength and high creep resistance at high temperature. Especially PEX-a pipes which are made by peroxide cross-linking have better performance, such as creep resistance and thermal shock resistance than the pipes made by the other cross-linking method. Because the PEX-a pipes indicate the higher cross-link degree as compared with the other PEX pipes. In this study, the PEX-a pipes which were mixed with several stabilizers were tested to evaluate the effects on cross-link degree and the oxygen induction time. And also they are evaluated with the chlorine aqueous solution by the performance of the long-term hydrostatic pressure test and the long-term hydro dynamic pressure test. As a result, it was found that the combination of antioxidants for PEX-a pipes plays an important role to prolong the oxygen induction time without inhibiting the cross-linking. From the results of the 1H pulsed NMR measurement over the melting point of polyethylene, it was found that each peroxide PEX pipe with different antioxidant combinations indicated the different proportion and crosslink density of cross-linked region, in addition, that these pipes had the effective structure of cross-linking for the hydrostatic and hydrodynamic pressure test with the chlorine aqueous solution. Therefore, it was considered to be useful results for studies of the stricture of cross-linking of polyethylene.

Effect of Particle Addition on Ultrasonic Degradation Reaction Rate

The ultrasonic degradation of methylene blue at a frequency of 490 kHz was carried out in the absence and presence of TiO2 or Al2O3 particle, and the effects of amounts of particle on the enhancement of degradation rate constant estimated by assuming first-order-kinetics were investigated. The degradation reaction was enhanced by particle addition, and the apparent degradation rate constant is proportional to the increase in amount of particle. In addition, the constant of proportionality is not influenced by degraded material and ultrasonic frequency. However, particle type influences the constant of proportionality, and the value of TiO2 particle is about 6 times as large as that of Al2O3 particle.

The treatment of atrophoderma vermiculatum is challenging. A 7-year-old girl had a unilateral atrophic skin lesion on her right cheek, which was diagnosed as unilateral atrophoderma vermiculata. She was treated by carbon dioxide and 595 nm pulsed dye laser and carbon dioxide laser. This resulted in prevention of the lesional progression with favorable cosmetic appearance of the skin.

The recent appearance of mobile application processor now plays an important role in the semiconductor industry. Additionally, there have been endless demands for small form factor, thin profile, outstanding thermal, mechanical properties and electrical performances in the field of IC packages for mobile application processors. MIS (Molded Interconnect Substrate) can provide ideal and this solution in the mobile industry as it contains multiple solutions for the complicated requirement of the IC packages for application processors. Based on the embedded pattern technology, this solution can provide high I/O count, fine pattern for small form factor, and stable flip chip mounting methods. Other advantages of this solution include stable properties required for high-frequency transmission and high thermal dissipation rate as it is only composed of copper and epoxy mold compound materials. These core techniques for MIS technology can be divided into below major concepts. First, Cu pillar electrolytic plating technology electrically connects the inner and the outer layers using photo-lithography method, instead of laser method. The shape of Cu pillar and the plating thickness tolerance control are the key parameters. Second, grinding technology is to precisely grind the plated Cu pillars and applied mold epoxy. And deposition of Cu layer on top of grinded mold surface can construct fine pattern traces.
