AIM To determine whether the presence of columnar-lined esophagus(CLE) is associated with the presence of esophageal varices(EVs) in male Japanese alcoholics. METHODS The subjects were 1614 Japanese alcohol-dependent men(≥ 40 years of age) who had undergone upper gastrointestinal endoscopic screening. Digitalized records of high-quality endoscopic images that included the squamocolumnar junction and esophagogastric junction were retrospectively jointly reviewed by four expert endoscopists for the purpose of diagnosing CLE. The authors investigated whether and to what extent there were associations between the presence of CLE and the presence of EVs, especially in the group with liver cirrhosis(LC).RESULTS CLE ≥ 5 mm in length was found in 355 subjects(≥ 30 mm in 6 of them), LC without EVs in 152 subjects, LC with EVs in 174 subjects, and EVs without LC in 6 subjects. Advanced EVs, i.e., nodular, large or coiled forms, red color sign, or post-treatment, were found in 88 subjects. The incidence of CLE ≥ 5 mm decreased in the following order(P < 0.0001): 23.3% in the group without EVs, 17.4% in the group with small and straight EVs, and 5.7% in the group with advanced EVs. The multivariate ORs(95%CI) for EVs and advanced EVs in the group with LC were lower when CLE ≥ 5 mm was present [0.46(0.23-0.93) and 0.24(0.08-0.74), respectively, vs 0-4 mm CLE]. CONCLUSION The presence of CLE in male Japanese alcoholics was negatively associated with the presence of EVs.

Evapotranspiration in forests has been researched for a long time because it serves an important role in water resource issues and biomass production. By applying the reciprocal analysis based on the Bowen ratio concept to the canopy surface, the sum result of sensible and latent heat fluxes, i.e., actual evapotranspiration (ET), is estimated from engineering aspect using the net radiation (Rn) and heat flux into the ground (G). The new method uses air temperature and humidity at a single height by determining the relative humidity (rehs) using the canopy temperature (Ts). The validity of the method is confirmed by the latent heat flux (lE) and sensible heat flux (H) observed by mean of eddy covariance method. The heat imbalance is corrected by multiple regression analysis. The temporal change of lE and H at the canopy surface is clarified using hourly and yearly data. Furthermore, the observed and estimated monthly evapotranspiration of the sites are compared. The research is conducted using hourly data and the validation of the method is conducted using observed covariance at five sites in the world using FLUXNET.

Background: Patient-reported outcome (PRO) has become the focus of increased attention in the assessment of total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The purpose of this study was to investigate whether different prosthesis designs affected postoperative patient-reported performance. Materials and Methods: We reviewed 216 patients (234 knees) implanted with the Press-Fit Condylar Sigma prosthesis at our institution between January 2009 and December 2011. This study included 76 knees with fixed-bearing cruciate-retaining (FB-CR), 78 knees with fixed-bearing posterior-stabilized (FB-PS), and 80 knees with mobile-bearing posterior-stabilized (MB-PS) designs. The mean follow-up was 8.0 ± 0.74 years. Preoperative and follow-up ratings according to the 2011 Knee Society Score (2011 KSS), range of motion (ROM), and standing femoro-tibial angle (FTA) were obtained for all patients. Additionally, Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC) scores were collected at last follow-up. Results: Three separate subscales of the 2011 KSS of the three cohorts were significantly improved post-operatively compared to the pre-operative values (p 0.05), except for expectation scores. At the time of follow-up, significantly higher the 2011 Knee Society Functional Scores (P = 0.016) were found in the PS group. Evapotranspiration acts an important role in hydrologic cycle and water resources planning. But the estimation issue still remains until nowadays. This research attempts to mak. clear this problem by the following way. In a humid region, by applying the Bowen ratio concept and optimum procedure on the soil surface, sensible and latent heat fluxes are estimated using net radiation (Rn) and heat flux into the ground (G). The method uses air temperature and humidity at a single height by reciprocally determining the soil surface temperature (Ts) and the relative humidity (rehs). This feature can be remark.bly extended to the utilization. The validity of the method is confirmed by comparing of observed and estimated latent (lE) and sensible heat flux (H) using the eddy covariance method. The hourly change of the lE, H, Ts and rehs on the soil surface, yearly change of lE and H and relationship of estimated lE and H versus observed are clarified. Furthermore, monthly evapotranspiration is estimated from the lE. The research was conducted using hourly data of FLUXNET at a site of Japan, three sites of the United States and two sites of Europe in humid regions having over 1000 mm of annual precipitation.

AIM： To elucidate the role of neuropilin-1 （Nrp-1） and semaphorin 3A （Sema3A） in sinusoidal remodeling dur- ing liver regeneration in rats. METHODS： Male Wistar/ST rats at 7 wk.of age, weigh- ing about 200 g, were used for all animal experiments. In vivo, at 24, 48, 72, 96, 144 and 192 h after two- thirds partial hepatectomy （PHx）, the remnant livers were removed. Liver tissues were immunohistochemi- cally stained for Nrp-1, Sema3A and SE-1, a liver sinu- soidal endothelial cell （SEC） mark.r. Total RNA of the liver tissue was extracted and reversely transcribed into cDNA. The mRNA expression of Sema3A was ana- lyzed by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reac- tion and normalized to that of ribosomal protein $18. In vitro, SECs were isolated from rat liver and cultured in endothelial growth medium containing 20 ng/mL vascular endothelial cell growth factor. Migration of SECs in primary culture was assessed by cell transwell assay with or without recombinant Sema3A. Apoptotic cells were determined by a terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated deoxyuridine triphosphate nick.end labeling method. RESULTS： In vitro, immunohistochemistry study re- vealed that Sema3A and Nrp-1 were constitutively ex- pressed in hepatocytes and SECs, respectively, in normal rat liver tissues. Nrp-1 expression in SECs was quantified by the percentage of immunostained area with anti- Nrp-1 antibody in relation to the area stained with SE-1. Between 24 h and 96 h following resection of liver, Nrp-1 expression in SECs was transiently increased. Compared with the baseline （5.2% ± 0.1%）, Nrp-1 expression in SECs significantly increased at 24 h （17.3% ± 0.7%, P 〈 0.05）, 48 h （39.1% ± 0.6%, P 〈 0.01）, 72 h （46.9% ± 4.5%, P 〈 0.01） and 96 h （29.9% ±3.8%, P 〈 0.01） after PHx, then returned to the basal level at termination of liver regeneration. AIM: To investigate the clinical efficacy of leuk.cytapheresis (LCAP) in patients with active ulcerative colitis (UC), and to elucidate the mechanisms by determining the changes in the cytok.ne levels in the peripheral blood and of the functions of the peripheral blood leuk.cytes in these patients. METHODS: The subjects were 19 patients with active UC, with a mean clinical activity index (CAI) of 9.2. The LCAP was conducted using Cellsorba E. In each session of LCAP, 2-3 L of blood at the flow rate of 30-50 mL/min was processed. The treatment was carried out in approximately 1-h sessions, once a week. for 5-10 wk. Blood samples for determination of the cytok.ne levels were collected from the inflow side of the column (site of dehematization; at the start of LCAP) and outflow side of the column (at the end of LCAP). Blood samples for the determination of reactive-oxygen-producing cells were collected from the peripheral blood before and after LCAP. RESULTS: LCAP resulted in clinical improvement in all the 19 patients of UC recruited for this study. Remission (CAI: ≤4) was noted in 15 (79%) of the 19 patients. The blood level of the pro-inflammatory cytok.ne IL-6 was found to be decreased following treatment by LCAP, and the level of the anti-inflammatory cytok.ne IL-10 at the outflow side of the LCAP column was found to be significantly elevated as compared to that at the inflow side of the column. The reactive-oxygen-producing granulocytes in the peripheral blood of UC patients was increased as compared to that in healthy persons and the increase was found to be decreased following treatment by LCAP. CONCLUSION: LCAP exerted a high therapeutic efficacy in patients with active UC. Our findings suggest that LCAP is associated with enhanced production of the inhibitory cytok.ne IL-10 to indirectly inhibit the functions of the inflammatory leuk.cytes, and that inflammation is also considerably attenuated by the direct removal of reactive-oxygen-producing neutrophils fro

石明松发现光敏核不育水稻，开辟了杂交稻研究的新篇章．两系法杂交稻的发展依赖于新的遗传工具，即光敏核不育水稻（ＰＧＭＲ）和温出核不育水稻（ＴＧＭＲ）。研究表明，农垦５８Ｓ系统的不育系不存在绝对的光敏不育性或绝对的温敏不育性，其育性转换都是受光温共同作用的结果．到目前为止，已育成了一批两系法品种间杂交稻组合．使型组合有ＮＡＮ７Ｓ／Ｒｇ－１、Ｎ５０８８Ｓ／Ｒ１８３、Ｎ５０８８／Ｒ１８７、３１３０１Ｓ／１５１４、７００１Ｓ／轮回４２２、７００ｌｓ／１５１４等．这些组合已在长江流域的双季稻区作晚稻种植了６０００多ｈｍ２，一般产量为６．７５～７．５０ｔ／ｈｍ２，比同生育期的常规粳稻品种鄂晚５号和鄂宜１０５等增产１０％～１５％，与同生育期的三系杂交籼稻汕优６４等产量持平．此外，具更强优势的亚种间杂交稻组合也已初步选出。
