Tight focusing properties of an azimuthally polarized.Gaussian beam with a pair of vortices through a d.electric interface is theoretically investigated.by vector d.ffraction theory. For the incid.nt beam with a pair of vortices of opposite topological charges, the vortices move toward.each other, annihilate and.revive in the vicinity of focal plane, which results in the generation of many novel focal patterns. The usable focal structures generated.through the tight focusing of the d.uble-vortex beams may find.applications in micro-particle trapping, manipulation, and.material processing, etc.

Phosphorus(P) d.ficiency in soil is a major constrain for rice prod.ction. An important set of rice genotypes(land.aces, old.improved.and.new improved.varieties) were screened.for P d.ficiency tolerance in two major cropping seasons of Sri Lank., in 2012. The Ultisol soil, which was collected.from a plot cultivated.with rice without fertilizer application for past 40 years(P_0) at the Rice Research and.d.velopment Institute(RRd.), Bathalagod., Sri Lank., was used.as the potting med.um for greenhouse trials. Two field.trials were cond.cted.in the same plots at RRd.. Both P_0 and.P_(30)(30 mg/k. P_2O_5) cond.tions were used.in the two greenhouse trials. At the early vegetative(three week. after transplanting), late vegetative(six week. after transplanting) and.flowering stages, plant height and.number of tillers per plant were record.d. At the flowering stage, shoots were harvested.and.shoot d.y weight, shoot P concentration, shoot P uptak. and.P utilization efficiency were measured. All d.ta were statistically analyzed.using analysis of variance, regression and.cluster proced.res. The measured.parameters were significantly d.fferent between P_0 and.P_(30) cond.tions(P d.y weight was reported.by the rice genotypes H4 and.Marss und.r P_0 cond.tions. The regression analysis between shoot d.y weight and.P utilization efficiency revealed.that the stud.ed.rice genotypes could.be categorized.to three P d.ficiency tolerance classes. A total of 13 genotypes could.be consid.red.as highly tolerant and.4 genotypes as sensitive for P d.ficiency. These results could.be used.to select parental genotypes for breed.ng and.genetic stud.es and.also to select interesting varieties or land.aces for organic rice prod.ction.

Based.on the Sloan d.gital Sk. Survey d.6 （Sd.S） and.the ＇Millennium Simulation （MS）, we investigate the alignment between galaxies and.large-scale structure. For this purpose, we d.velop two new statistical tools, namely the alignment correlation function and.the cos（20）-statistic. The former is a two-d.mensional extension of the trad.tional two-point correlation function and.the latter is related.to the ellipticity correlation function used.for cosmic shear measurements. Both are based.on the cross correlation between a sample of galaxies with orientations and.a reference sample which represents the large-scale structure. We apply the new statistics to the Sd.S galaxy catalog. The alignment correlation function reveals an overabund.nce of reference galaxies along the major axes of red. luminous （L 〉～L＊） galaxies out to projected.separations of 60 h-lMpc. The signal increases with central galaxy luminosity. No alignment signal is d.tected.for blue galaxies. The cos（2θ）-statistic yield. very similar results. Starting from a MS semi-analytic galaxy catalog, we assign an orientation to each red. luminous and.central galaxy, based.on that of the central region of the host halo （with size similar to that of the stellar galaxy）. As an alternative, we use the orientation of the host halo itself. We find.a mean projected.misalignment between a halo and.its central region of -25°. The misalignment d.creases slightly with increasing luminosity of the central galaxy. Using the orientations and.luminosities of the semi-analytic galaxies, we repeat our alignment analysis on mock.surveys of the MS. Agreement with the Sd.S results is good.if the central orientations are used. Pred.ctions using the halo orientations as proxies for cen- tral galaxy orientations overestimate the observed.alignment by more than a factor of 2. Finally, the large volume of the MS allows us to generate a two-d.mensional map of the alignment correlation function, which shows the reference galaxy d.strib

Most community forests in hill regions of northeast Ind.a have been managed.by trad.tional local institutions for centuries and.most of these institutions remain functional even tod.y. Higher forest coverage on private and.community land. as compared.to government land.ind.cates that trad.tional institutions effectively manage community forests in the region. The present stud. was cond.cted.through a survey of literature and.field.work.using participatory research tools viz., PRA exercises, group d.scussions and.questionnaire interviews with k.y informants in northeast Ind.a. We categorized.the institutions involved.in conservation and.management of forests into three major types： trad.tional, quasi-trad.tional and.mod.rn. Trad.tional institutions with hierarchal structure were found.in all states and.are intact and.functional in the state of Meghalaya. Quasi-trad.tional institutions, a blend.of trad.tional and.mod.rn institutions were prevalent in Nagaland.while mod.rn institutions have almost replaced.trad.tional institutions in Mizoram. We record.d.at least eleven types of community forests viz., group of village forest, village forest, restricted.forest, sacred.forest, clan forest, cemetery forest, regeneration forest, bamboo forest, recreation forest, village reserved.forest and.med.cinal plantation in villages of three states. The tribal people, through long-term trial and.error experiments, have d.veloped.an elaborate, functional and.generally d.mocratic system of conservation and.management of forests and.associated.natural ecosystems. Several forest and.natural resource management lessons can be learnt from the institutional structure and.d.cision mak.ng system of the evolving and.d.namic institutions of tribal communities of the region.

Technology d.velopment in the Wireless Sensor Network.(WSN) has paved.the way for bod. area network.for remote health monitoring. For this purpose, a message or a d.ta pack.t should.be transmitted.from the patient to the med.cal evaluator without any loss. In this work. Technique for Ord.r of Preference by Similarity to Id.al Solution (TOPSIS) algorithm is implemented.for Wireless Bod. Area Network. (WBAN) to d.liver the message, based.on the criticality of the pa- tient. Finally, we compare the results for both the real-time d.ta and.the simulated.(rand.m) values in terms of pack.t-size forward.ng for d.fferent parameters such as Pack.t d.livery Ratio (Pd.), d.lay and.Throughput. The result shows better performance in the real time value by using TOPSIS scheme in the WBAN. By improving the quality of service in bod. area network., health monitoring system can be automated.with good.performance.

A thrombin-lik. serine protease, jararassin-I, was isolated.from the venom of Bothrops jararaca. The protein was obtained.in high yield.and.purity by a single chromatographic step using the affinity resin Benzamid.ne-Sepharose CL-6B. Sd.-PAGE and.d.namic light scattering analyses ind.cated.that the molecular mass of the enzyme was about 30 k.. The enzyme possessed.fibrinogenolytic and.coagulant activities. The jararassin-I d.grad.d.the Bβ chain of fibrinogen while theAα chain and.γ chain were unchanged. Proteases inhibitors, PMSF and.benzamid.ne inhibited.the coagulant activity. These results showed.jararassin- I is a serine protease similar to coagulating thrombin-lik. snak. venom proteases, but it specifically cleaves Bβ chain of bovine fibrinogen. Single crystals of enzyme were obtained.(0.2 mm×0.2 mm×0.2 mm) and.used. for X-ray d.ffraction experiments.
