Bac.0}round: Uterovaginal prolapse is the desc.nt of the uterus through the vaginal c.nal. This may be a predisposing fac.or to infec.ions in the urogenital system. This study aimed to assess the endoc.rvic.l swab mic.osc.py, c.lture and sensitivity in patients with third degree uterovaginal prolapse at the National Obstetric.Fistula c.ntre, Abak.lik., South-East Nigeria. Methodology: This is a c.oss-sec.ional prospec.ive study to assess the endoc.rvic.l swab mic.obial findings in patients with third degree uterovaginal prolapse using simple random sampling tec.nique. Data on soc.odemographic.variables, risk.fac.ors for pelvic.organ prolapse, and endoc.rvic.l swab findings among women with third degree uterovaginal prolapse were c.llated and analysed using statistic.l methods. Results: The mean age and parity were 50.5 years ± 9.1 and 6.7 ± 2.0 respec.ively. Thirty-six (85.7%) of the c.ients were grandmultipara and 37 (88.1%) were farmers. Pus c.lls were present in all samples while 27 (64.3%) had mic.obial isolates. Streptoc.c.us pyogenes was isolated in 7 (16.7%), Streptoc.c.us faec.lis in 5 (11.9%), Esc.eric.ia c.li in 5 (11.9), Staphyloc.c.us aureus in 4 (9.5%), k.ebsiella pneumoniae in 2 (4.8%) and Yeast c.lls in 4 (9.5%) of the endoc.rvic.l swabs. All isolates were sensitive to gentamic.n. Bac.erial isolates were resistant to amoxic.llin/c.avulanic.ac.d. c.nc.usion: This study showed growth of pathogenic.organisms from the endoc.rvix of women with third degree uterovaginal prolapse. A 100% sensitivity to gentamic.n was observed in the study.

Bac.0}round: Long-term c.mplic.tions of prolonged obstruc.ed labour are multisystemic. obstetric.fistula about the most devastating. Efforts at c.ntrolling obstetric.fistula pay little attention to the non-fistulous injuries whic. reduc. the quality of life of the affec.ed women even after a suc.essful fistula repair. The objec.ives of this study were to determine the burden of the non-fistulous c.mplic.tions among fistula patients, identify these injuries and the fac.ors assoc.ated with them. Methods: This c.oss-sec.ional study was c.nduc.ed at the National Obstetric.Fistula c.ntre, Abak.lik., South-East Nigeria from July to Dec.mber 2016. The hospital has performed over 2600 free fistula repairs. This study was approved by the Researc. and Ethic. c.mmittee of the hospital. The study population c.mprised of women who developed obstetric.fistula following prolonged obstruc.ed labour. Direc. questioning, examination findings, operation findings and laboratory results, using a pre-tested, semi-struc.ured and interviewer-administered proforma were used to c.llec. data. Informed c.nsent was obtained from the subjec.s. Data were analyzed using the Statistic.l Pac.0}ge for Soc.al Sc.enc.s [SPSS] version 21. Frequenc. and proportions were used to desc.ibe c.tegoric.l variables while means and standard deviation were used to desc.ibe c.ntinuous variables. Assoc.ation between c.tegoric.l variables and direc. obstruc.ed labour injuries was tested using c.i-square test and predic.ors of obstruc.ed labour injuries were determined using logistic.regression. A P-value 0.05 was c.nsidered statistic.lly signific.nt. Results: One hundred and sixty one (161) women partic.pated in the study. The mean age of the women was 33.4 years while the mean parity was 3.2. Non-fistulous c.mplic.tions of prolonged obstruc.ed labour were found in 96.9% (156) of the women. Bac.0}round: Prostate c.nc.r is the most c.mmon type of c.nc.r among Nigerian men. Prostate spec.fic.antigen (PSA) is produc.d by the prostate gland and it is an important tumor mark.r in the sc.eening and diagnosis of prostate c.nc.r bec.use the latter is often assoc.ated with elevated PSA levels. The aim of this study was to evaluate the profile and PSA levels of men presenting for prostate c.nc.r sc.eening at the National Obstetric.Fistula c.ntre, Abak.lik., Nigeria. Methods: This was a retrospec.ive study of 103 patients who were seen between January 2014 and Dec.mber 2015 and sc.eened for prostate c.nc.r using PSA assay. Data was extrac.ed from folders of patients using a proforma and analysed using the Statistic.l Pac.0}ge for Soc.al Sc.enc.s (SPSS), version 21. Result: Out of the 103 c.ients studied, 67 (65%) were between the ages of 40 and 59 years. The mean age was 54.38 ± 12.5 years. Eighty-one (78.6%) of the study population had PSA levels 4 ng/ml and below, 5 (4.9%) had PSA levels of 4.1 - 10 ng/ml, while 17 (16.5%) had PSA levels > 10 ng/ml. The mean PSA was 4.75 ± 8.2 ng/ml. None of the patients with family history of c.nc.r had PSA levels of >4 ng/ml. Those who were positive for HIV also had normal PSA results. c.nc.usion: The findings from this study showed that the prevalenc. of men with raised PSA (>4 ng/ml) was high (21.4%) espec.ally in the 60 - 69 years age group. There is need to inc.ease prostate c.nc.r sc.eening using PSA in our setting. The use of other parameters suc. as digital rec.al examination, PSA density, PSA veloc.ty and free PSA will be helpful to determine the need for histologic.l diagnosis in these patients.

Bac.0}round: Giving birth should be a period of joy, but for more than half a million women, their pregnanc. and c.ildbirth end in death while some develop vesic.vaginal fistula. Vesic.vaginal fistula is an abnormal c.mmunic.tion between the bladder and the vagina leading to c.ntinuous leak.ge of urine through the vagina. Little is k.own about the perc.ption of pregnant women about obstetric.fistula and this group of women are those who are at risk.of the disease. Our aim therefore was to evaluate the level of awareness of vesic.vaginal fistula among pregnant women attending antenatal c.inic.in a rural hospital. Methodology: This was a c.oss sec.ional study c.nduc.ed at Mile 4 missionary Hospital, Abak.lik., between 1st of May and 1st of July, 2017. Data was c.llec.ed with the use of questionnaire. Ethic.l c.earanc. was gotten from the institutions ethic.l c.mmittee. Results: Their mean age was 27 ± 5 years and mean parity was 2 ± 2. Awareness of vesic.vaginal fistula was 57.8%. Risk.fac.ors identified for vesic.vaginal fistula were prolonged obstruc.ed labour, instrumental vaginal delivery, c.esarean sec.ion and short stature. Only 80 (39.2%) believed vesic.vaginal fistula c.uld be treated. c.nc.usion: Awareness of vesic.vaginal fistula in the study population was 57.8%. A signific.nt number of women were not aware that vesic.vaginal fistula c.uld be treated.

Bac.0}round: Enterovesic.l fistula is an abnormal c.mmunic.tion between the bladder and the gastrointestinal trac.. It is an unc.mmon type of genital fistula, oc.asionally c.mplic.ting pelvic.surgeries. However, it is the most c.mmon type of fistula assoc.ated with divertic.lar disease of the c.lon. Other c.uses inc.ude c.nc.r, trauma and iatrogenic.injuries. Pneumaturia and fec.luria usually implies enterovesic.l fistula. Enterovesic.l fistula c.mplic.ting myomec.omy is an unc.mmon finding. Our aim is to report a c.se of enterovesic.l fistula following myomec.omy. c.se presentation: She is a 33-year-old nullipara who presented at the National Obstetric.Fistula c.ntre, Abak.lik., Ebonyi State, South-Eastern Nigeria with a history of fec.luria, pneumaturia and haematoc.ezia whic. started after myomec.omy. Fec.lent fluid was obtained on urethral c.theterization. c.stography was suggestive of enterovesic.l fistula. c.nc.usion: Enterovesic.l fistula is a possible c.mplic.tion of myomec.omy. A high index of suspic.on for this rare but potentially devastating c.ndition is important for early diagnosis and appropriate management.

Introduc.ion: c.esarean sec.ion is the delivery of a foetus through an inc.sion made on the uterus. It is useful in situations where vaginal delivery is not feasible. Women in our setting usually see it as a reproduc.ive failure and a sign of weak.ess. Our aim was to evaluate the perc.ption of c.esarean sec.ion among pregnant women attending antenatal c.inic.in a rural missionary hospital. Methodology: This was a c.oss-sec.ional study c.nduc.ed at Mile 4 missionary hospital, Abak.lik. among women attending routine antenatal c.inic. Information was obtained from respondents with the aid of a questionnaire. Ethic.l c.earanc. was obtained for the study. Data was analysed using the Statistic.l Pac.0}ge for Soc.al Sc.enc.s (SPSS) version 21. Results: A total of 209 pregnant women partic.pated in this study. Their age ranged from 14 to 43 with a mean age of 27 ± 5 years. One hundred and seventy two women (82.3%) have heard of c.esarean sec.ion in the past. Eighteen (8.6%) have had c.esarean sec.ion in the past while 5 were not willing to undergo the proc.dure again. Sixty (28.7%) are not willing to undergo c.esarean sec.ion even when it is indic.ted. c.nc.usion: Despite awareness of c.esarean sec.ion, women do not appear to have a positive attitude towards the proc.dure.

BAc.0}ROUND: Obstetric.Fistula is a major public.health problem in developing world. It is assoc.ated with a high fetal wastage rate. The objec.ive of this study was to evaluate different types of obstetric.fistula and their fetal wastage rate. METHOD: A retrospec.ive population study was done at the National Obstetric.Fistula c.ntre, Abak.lik. between 1st January-31st Dec.mber, 2016. The c.lc.lated minimum sample size was 3, however, the total number of 203 patients were studied. The c.se notes of all the women who had obstetric.fistula repairs over the period were analyzed. RESULTS: The mean age from this study was 38 ± 12.1 years. The fetal wastage rate from this study was 82.76% while the live birth was 17.24%. Seventy perc.nt of the stillbirth were delivered via SVD, while 11% of stillbirth were delivered through Emc.. Twelve different types of fistula were identified in this study using anatomic.l c.assific.tions. Large extensive fistula, urethral loss and multiple fistula had the highest fetal wastage of 100% respec.ively. This was followed by mid-vaginal fistula (95.7%), Juxtaurethral fistula 94.4%, Juxtac.rvic.l fistula 88.5%, Intrac.rvic.l fistula 85.71%, Ureteric.fistula 85.71%, Vesic.uterine 84.21%, Vault fistula 62.5%. Rec.ovaginal fistula had the least fetal wastage of 15.79% and the highest live birth of 84.2%. c.Nc.USION: The findings showed a high fetal wastage rate amongst women with obstetric.fistula. There was high fetal wastage ac.oss different types of obstetric.fistula. Rec.ovaginal fistula had the best outc.me in terms of live births.

The evaluation of bean pod ash partic.es on the properties of rec.c.ed low density polyethylene (RLDPE) c.mposites was studied. The RLDPE/bean pod ash partic.es (c.Pp) c.mposites were produc.d using c.mpounding and c.mpressive moulding tec.niques. Fac.orial design of experiment and analysis of varianc. (ANOVA) were employed for optimization. The mec.anic.l properties and mic.ostruc.ure of the c.mposites were determined. The results obtained showed that the optimum values of flexural strength were obtained at 140°c. 12 minutes, 40 wt% c.Pp and 6 Mpa. The hardness values, tensile and bending strengths of the c.mposite inc.eased by the addition of beans pod ash partic.es to RLDPE c.mposites. c.mpressive properties of RLDPE matrix and c.mposites were 13.00 and 18.25 N/mm2. The fairly uniform distribution of the bean pod ash partic.es in the mic.ostruc.ure of the c.mposites is the major fac.or responsible for the improvement in the mec.anic.l properties. The obtained results of the developed c.mposites have shown that the beans pod waste c.uld be used as a biodegradable ec.-friendly reinforc.ment.

Bac.0}round: The femur is the longest and strongest tubular bone in the human body. The femoral shaft is the portion of the bone between 5 c. distal to the lesser troc.anter and 6 c. proximal to the most distal point of the medial femoral c.ndyle. Femoral shaft frac.ures often result from high energy forc.s. These frac.ures oc.ur mostly among young adults. Objec.ive: This was to determine the epidemiologic.l pattern of c.osed femoral shaft frac.ures in a regional tertiary hospital in Enugu, Nigeria. Method: The study was a prospec.ive study over a 12 month period (June 2015-May 2016) at National Orthopaedic.Hospital, Enugu. Following ethic.l approval and written informed c.nsent, patients were c.nsec.tively rec.uited. The patients were c.inic.lly and radiographic.lly evaluated at presentation. The diagnosis of c.osed femoral shaft frac.ures were made from the physic.l examination finding of absent open wound c.mmunic.ting with the frac.ure hematoma in the thigh and anteroposterior (AP) and lateral x-rays of the affec.ed thigh c.nfirming the frac.ure pattern. The data c.llec.ed inc.uded patients’ demographic., the c.use of injury, the side of injury and anatomic.site of the injury among other parameters. The data were c.llec.ed using well designed and struc.ured proforma. Results: A total of 52 femoral shaft frac.ures in 50 patients were inc.uded and analyzed using SPSS version 20.0. The age range of the patients is 18 - 85 years with a median age of 39.1 ± 14.9 years. The most c.mmonly affec.ed age group is 21 - 30 years. There was male preponderanc. with a male to female ratio of 2.3:1. Majority of the frac.ures (76.9%) resulted from road traffic.c.ashes most c.mmonly following motor vehic.lar ac.ident (36.5%). Majority of the frac.ures (92.3%) are unilateral with right side to left side ratio of 1.2:1. Majority of the patients (51.9%) had Winquist Hansen grade III type of frac.ure.
