Diel vertical migration of the copepod Calanus sinicus before and during formation of the Yellow Sea Cold Bottom Water in the Yellow Sea

To understand the effects of the Yellow Sea Cold Bottom Water （YSCBW） on the diel vertical migration （D- VM） of the copepod Calanus sinicus, we surveyed vertical distribution of C. sinicus at a fixed station in the Yellow Sea before （spring） and during （summer） formation of the YSCBW. Cold water （〈10℃） was observed in the bottom layer when the water column was thermally stratified in summer, but the water column was thermally well-mixed in spring 2010. Samples were collected from five different layers at 3-h intervals using an opening-closing net. Adult females （1-155 ind./m3） showed a clear normal DVM pattern throughout the entire water column in spring, whereas adult males did not migrate. DVM of copepodite V （CV） individuals was not clear, but the maximum abundance of CI-CIV occurred consistently in the upper 10-20 m layer, where there was a high concentration of chlorophyll-a （Chl-a）（0.49-1.19μg/L）. In summer, weak DVM was limited to cold waters beneath the thermocline for adult females （〈30 ind./m3）, but not for adult males. The maximum abundance of CI-CIV also occurred consistently in the subsurface layer （20-40 m） together with high concentrations of Chl-a （0.81-2.36 μg/L）. CV individuals （1-272 ind./m3） moved slightly upward noc- turnally to the near-surface layer （10-20 m）, where the average temperature was 25.74℃, but they were not found in the surface layer （0-10 m; 28.31℃）. These results indicate that the existence of the YSBCW affected food availability at depth and the vertical temperature distribution, leading to variation in the amplitude and shape of stage-specific vertical distributions （CI to adults） in C. sinicus before and during the formation of cold waters in the Yellow Sea during the study period.

Effect of W/C ratio and cover thickness on polarization characteristics of embedded steel in mortar

The effects of cover thickness and W/C(water-to-cement) ratio on polarization properties of embedded steel bar were investigated with electrochemical *** potentials shift to the noble direction with increasing the cover *** addition,when the cover thickness increasingly becomes thinner and thinner,effect of the W/C ratio on variation of corrosion potential increases as *** value at 100 kHz indicating the resistance of cover thickness increases with the decrement of W/C ratio as well as the increment of cover ***,in the case of W/C ratio at 0.6,impedance at 10 mHz shows the relatively larger value than that at W/C ratio of 0.4 or 0.5 in the range of cover thickness from 4 to 8 cm,which is probably expected that oxide film built up on the surface of steel bar due to strong alkali environment by hydration reaction with increasing W/C ratio is performed as the resistance *** is also observed that liquid junction potential tends to increase with decreasing W/C ratio.

Clinical Efficacy and Safety of Miniscalpel-Needle Treatment for Tension-Type Headache:A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Objective:To investigate the clinical efficacy and safety of miniscalpel-needle(MSN)treatment for tension-type headache(TTH).Method:Seven medical databases were searched to identify randomized controlled trials(RCTs)evaluating the effect and safety of MSN *** articles published up to November 15,2018 were retrieved.A meta-analysis was conducted for the included studies,and the risk of bias was *** outcomes were visual analogue scale(VAS)or numeric rating scale(NRS)*** outcomes were clinical effective rates including total effective rate(TER),markedly effective rate(MER),and totally cured rate(TCR)determined by improvement in clinical symptoms or VAS scores,the frequency of adverse events(AEs)that occurred during the study,and participant quality of life(QOL).Results:Seven RCTs involving 724 participants were *** treatment showed significantly higher MER and TCR[relative risk(RR)1.27,95%confidence interval(Cl)1.01 to 1.61;RR 1.31,95%Cl 1.09 to 1.57,respectively],but not TER(RR 1.03,95%Cl 0.96 to 1.10)compared to *** treatment plus conventional treatment showed significant lower VAS and higher TER,MER,and TCR(mean difference-3.54,95%Cl-3.80 to-3.28;RR 1.14,95%Cl 1.06 to 1.23;RR 2.31,95%Cl 1.50 to 3.58;RR 3.01,95%Cl 2.25 to 4.02,respectively)compared to conventional ***:According to current evidence,MSN treatment as a monotherapy or as an adjunctive treatment to other existing treatments might have benefits on treating ***,since the number and the sample size of studies included were both small and the methodological quality was poor,the findings of this review should be interpreted with great caution,and our confidence in the results is low.A high quality RCT using objective outcomes should be performed on this topic.

In the probiotics manufacturing process,lyophilization damages the cell membrane of microorganisms,reducing their viability and delaying reactivation of their cellular *** growth phase of microorganisms at the time of lyophilization is thought to significantly affect their viability during storage and reactivation in the ***,no study has systematically investigated the differences in overcoming mechanisms in microorganisms harvested at different growth phases against ***,in this study,we comparatively assessed the resistance mechanism of Bifidobacterium animalis *** and Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus harvested at exponential and stationary growth *** found that *** *** and *** harvested at the stationary phase had shorter lag phase in growth and higher survival rates during storage than those harvested at the exponential *** a result of metabolome analysis,the cells harvested at the stationary phase accumulated trehalose and arabinose,which function as cryoprotectants and protect cells from lyophilization-induced *** findings could provide a basis for establishing a manufacturing protocol for lyophilized probiotics that can be rapidly reactivated in the intestine to achieve optimal metabolic activity and induce health benefits.

Magnesium oxysulfate(MOS)whisker is considered as a promising inorganic material recently attracting a great attention for being used as a reinforcing filler for polymer composites due to high aspect ratio and extremely-low bulk *** this study,the MOS was treated with 3-methacryloyloxypropyl-trimethoxy silane(MPS)via sol-gel condensation reactions,which successfully allowed melt mixing with polypropylene(PP)up to 30 wt%of *** tensile strength at yield and modulus of the MOS/PP composites were substantially increased by 50.8%and 362%,respectively,when compared with the pristine *** a novel finding,the flame retardancy of MOS was proved by identifying water evolution at elevated temperatures giving out 9 wt%of water in 250-320℃and 14 wt%in 350-420℃in two *** work demonstrated that the MOS could be an excellent filler for PP not only increasing the mechanical properties in a great extent but also imposing flame retarding capability.

Highly Flexible Fabrics/Epoxy Composites with Hybrid Carbon Nanofillers for Absorption-Dominated Electromagnetic Interference Shielding

Epoxy-based nano-composites can be ideal electromagnetic interference(EMI)-shielding materials owing to their lightness,chemical inertness,and mechanical ***,poor conductivity and brittleness of the epoxy resin are challenges for fast-growing portable and flexible EMI-shielding applications,such as smart wristband,medical cloth,aerospace,and military *** this study,we explored hybrid nanofillers of single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWCNT)/reduced graphene oxide(rGO)as conductive inks and polyester fabrics(PFs)as a substrate for flexible EMI-shielding *** highest electrical conductivity and fracture toughness of the SWCNT/rGO/PF/epoxy composites were 30.2 S m^(−1)and 38.5 MPa m^(1/2),which are~270 and 65%enhancement over those of the composites without SWCNTs,*** mechanical durability was demonstrated by stable electrical conductivity retention during 1000 cycles of bending *** EMI-shielding effectiveness of~41 dB in the X-band frequency of 8.2-12.4 GHz with a thickness of 0.6 mm was obtained with an EM absorption-dominant behavior over a 0.7 absorption *** results are attributed to the hierarchical architecture of the macroscale PF skeleton and nanoscale SWCNT/rGO networks,leading to superior EMI-shielding *** believe that this approach provides highly flexible and robust EMI-shielding composites for next-generation wearable electronic devices.

Developing highly efficient and durable catalysts for future electrochemical and energy applications is one of the main subjects of current studies in renewable energy generation. In the past several years, researchers have developed Pt-based alloy electrocatalyst nanomaterials that exhibit promising electrocatalytic properties for various electrochemical applications. The efficient structural and morphological control of Pt-based alloy materials plays a decisive role in achieving these enhanced electrocatalytic properties. The present review article emphasizes the recent progress and important developments in the synthesis and electrocatalytic applications of Pt-group-based nanodendrite materials. The following review will help the exploration and development of better catalysts for practical applications and aims to elucidate the nanodendrite structure of Pt-group metals.
