The COVID-19 Outbreak in South Korea: Lessons to Be Learned

The Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) is a novel type of coronavirus-related disease that has over 4 million confirmed cases worldwide as of May 13th, 2020. With over 200 countries impacted by the pandemic, many countries have taken drastic measures such as temporary closure of international borders. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the South Korean response to COVID-19 and the keys to successful containment of the disease. Real time analysis was performed on data provided by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Comparisons of disease containment among countries with the highest confirmed cases were normalized for population size differences by taking the proportion of confirmed cases to population size. We further compared the disease outbreak in Seoul, a very urban environment, to the whole country of South Korea, to compare public health in urban and rural environments. We found that the efficient partnership between the private sector and the state led to rapid development in testing kits, which was integral to the South Korean response to COVID-19. In addition, the South Koreans’ community spirit, approval of government-led interventions, and societal norm of wearing masks were also efficient social responses to the spreading disease. In this paper, we navigate the impacts of a universal healthcare system and its ability to battle infectious diseases and the efficacy of various governmental actions in response to a public health crisis.

Renewable Biofuel Production Using Red Ginseng Marc in Microbial Fuel Cells

Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is one of the clean and sustainable energy technologies, often referred to as renewable energy, and directly chemical energy contained in organic matter into electrical energy by using the catalytic activity of microorganisms. Cellulosic biomass is a particularly attractive renewable resource for its abundant supply at low cost and its neutral carbon balance. However, methanogenesis had been negatively linked to anaerobic cellulosic power generation in MFCs. Ginseng root is a saponin-rich plant material and red ginseng marc (RGM) has not been reused as a high-value resource for industry although its residue contained both electron donors and saponin, the potential power generation enhancers for MFC. In this study, RGM was supplemented into MFC to evaluate its effects on methanogenesis and power generation. Two-chamber H-type MFCs were established using rumen fluid as anolyte to ferment cellulose at 2% (w/v). RGM, the residue from the steam and press process for red ginseng beverage preparation, was freeze-dried and ground to pass 0.5 mm sieve and added to the anode of MFC at 1% (w/v;Exp. 1) or 0.1% (Exp. 2) dose for treatment. Open circuit voltage, voltage and current across an external resistor were measured daily for 10d. On d10 of operation, collected biogases were measured for total gas production and analyzed for its components. In Exp. 1, power density was between 44.0 and 97.2 with an average of 83.8 mW/m2 in 1% RGM MFCs and was between 45.2 and 76.3 with an average of 61.5 mW/m2 in control. In Exp. 2, power density was between 44.8 and 75.6 with an average of 60.9 mW/m2 in 0.1% RGM MFCs and was between 45.1 and 54.1 with an average of 49.7 mW/m2 in control. Total gas production for 10d was 563 and 523 mL for RGM and control, respectively, in Exp 1, and was 546 and 477 mL for RGM and control, respectively, in Exp 2. Genetic polymorphism in pathogenesis of irritable bowel syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a complex symptom-based disorder without established biomarkers or putative pathophysiology. IBS is a common functional gastrointestinal disorder which is defined as recurrent abdominal pain or discomfort that has at least two of the following symptoms for 3 d per month in the past 3 mo according to ROME III: relief by defecation, onset associated with a change in stool frequency or onset with change in appearance or form of stool. Recent discoveries revealed genetic polymorphisms in specific cytokines and neuropeptides may possibly influence the frequencies and severity of symptoms, as well as the therapeutic responses in treating IBS patients. This review gives new insights on how genetic determinations influence in clinical manifestations, treatment responses and potential biomarkers of IBS.

Prospect for China–Korea Economic Relations

This paper briefly reviews the economic performance of China＇s economic reform starting in 1978, and which it presents personal views on the experiences of Korea ＇s economic development and lessons for China＇s economic reform. The paper reviews the China- Korea economic relationship, and explores both the opportunities of China＇s economic development for Korea and the prospeets for Bilateral Economic cooperation. It is estimated that the Chinese economy will maintain dynamic growthJbr the coming decade. The 2008 Olympic Games and the 2010 Worm Expo in China will provide further impetuses for Chinese economic development. China＇s huge market and its rapid economic growth can help the further recovery and development of the Korean economy. At the same time, the .further development of the Chinese economy can benefit from financial, technical and managerial supportfrom Korea. The eomplementarities between the industrial structures of China and Korea will surely push their future economic cooperation into a broader and deeper stage. Bilateral trade will enhance the competitiveness of both nations in the global market and help them achieve mutual prosperity and development.

煤和含煤岩系中Li是全球Li资源潜在来源之一,引起了国内外高度重视。沁水盆地局部地区煤中Li异常富集,探讨其同位素组成特点与演化有助于深化锂富集分配机制认识。以盆地北部阳泉矿区新景矿8号无烟煤层为研究对象,利用电感耦合等离子体质谱仪(ICP-MS)和X射线衍射仪(XRD)测定Li质量分数和矿物组成,结合逐级化学提取试验,确定煤中Li的赋存状态。利用多接收器电感耦合等离子体质谱仪(MC-ICP-MS),测试煤样和不同赋存状态Li的同位素组成,探讨了煤化作用过程中Li同位素分馏特征。结果表明:煤样Li平均质量分数达138.04μg/g,高于世界硬煤中的平均质量分数(14μg/g);主要载体为高岭石,有少量Li以有机结合态的形式存在;原煤样中δ7Li的均值为-2.13‰,硅酸盐结合态δ7Li的均值为-1.15‰,有机结合态δ7Li均值为-1.53‰,不同赋存状态Li同位素组成相似。研究认为,无烟煤中Li同位素组成趋同机理为:①煤化作用过程中轻的6Li从有机结构中脱除,再次吸附到黏土矿物中,导致煤中有机结合态Li同位素组成变重,硅酸盐结合态Li同位素组成变轻;②在水-岩反应过程中,硅酸盐矿物中重的7Li很容易被溶液萃取,导致硅酸盐结合态中重的7Li流失,Li同位素组成变轻;③煤化作用升温过程有助于Li元素的扩散,促使Li同位素达到动力学分馏平衡。

Corporate spinoffs and executive compensation

This paper investigates the impact of corporate spinoffs on executive compensation. We find no significant association between executive compensation and stock returns prior to spinoffs, but a significant positive association between the two afterwards. We also find evidence that corporate governance generally improves after the spinoff. In addition, the positive association between executive compensation and stock returns is more pronounced for firms with greater improvements in their corporate governance. Overall, our findings support the notion that spinoffs create value by reducing agency costs.

The Cellulolytic Bacteria <i>R. albus</i>for Improving the Efficiency of Microbial Fuel Cell

The current study has been undertaken to examine the beneficial effect in the power output of a microbial fuel cell (MFC) by adding cellulolytic bacteria Ruminococcus albus (R. albus) into the anodic chamber. Mediator-less H-type MFCs were set up where the anode chamber contained anaerobic digester microorganisms as inocula on finely ground pine tree (Avicel) at 2% (w/v) and the cathode chamber of 10mM phosphate buffered saline conductive solution, both separated by a cation exchange membrane. The functioning of the MFCs for generation of electrical power and the amounts of gaseous byproducts was monitored over a 9-day period. The addition of cellulolytic bacteria caused an increase of average power density from 7.9 m W/m2 to19.5 m W/m2, about 245% increase over a 9-day period. For both groups of MFCs;with R. albus and the control, the head space gases collected were methane and CO2. While the methane: CO2 ratios were found unchanged at 1.7:1 throughout the 9 days of operation, the total gas production increased from 248 mL to 319 mL due to the presence of R. albus addition. This study confirms that whereas the biocatalytic activity of anode microbial population determines the energy production, the addition of external cellulolytic bacteria into anode microbial population can improve and extend the biomass utilization.

Pandemic influenza has posed an increasing threat to public health worldwide in the last *** the 20th century,three human pandemic influenza outbreaks occurred in 1918,1957 and 1968,causing significant mortality.A number of hypotheses have been proposed for the emergence and development of pandemic viruses,including direct introduction into humans from an avian origin and reassortment between avian and previously circulating human viruses,either directly in humans or via an intermediate mammalian ***,the evolutionary history of the pandemic viruses has been controversial,largely due to the lack of background genetic information and rigorous phylogenetic *** pandemic that emerged in early April 2009 in North America provides a unique opportunity to investigate its emergence and development both in human and animal *** genetic analyses of data accumulated through long-term influenza surveillance provided insights into the emergence of this novel pandemic *** this review,we summarise the recent literature that describes the evolutionary pathway of the pandemic *** also discuss the implications of these findings on the early detection and control of future pandemics.
