Background:Pectus excavatum is the most common congenital chest wall deformity,with a high incidence in live *** study aimed to evaluate the measured factors on CT images related to the number of pectus bars for surgical ***:A total of 497 patients who had undergone minimally invasive repair between April 2007 and July 2011 were classified into single-bar(n=358)and doublebar(n=139)insertion *** measured eight distinct distances and one angle on CT scans to reflect quantitative *** analysis and multivariate logistic regression analysis were performed to detect statistically significant association between radiologic measurements and the pectus bars ***:After adjusting for age and gender,the transverse distance(T),the transverse distance of the depression area(A),the inclined distance of the depression area(B),the AP distance of the depression area(C),the depression angle(G),and the eccentric distance of deformity(E)were significantly correlated with double-bar *** regression model showed that age(,P<0.0001),gender(P<0.0001),depression angle(G)(P<0.0001),direction of the depression(DD)(P<***1)and depression depth(D)(P<0.0001)were significantly associated with doublebar ***:CT scan provides useful factors which can be of assistance in predicting the number of pectus bars for the surgical correction of pectus excavatum.

BACKGROUND： Thyroid hormones modulate proliferation of astrocytes and microglia depending on maturation stage and localization. Studies have demonstrated that triiodothyronine treatment or thyroidectomy during developmental stages results in morphological alterations and changes in the number of astrocytes and microglia. Little is known about the effects of hypothyroidism on astrocytes and microglia in adults. OBJECTIVE： To investigate the effects of hypothyroidism on morphology and number of astrocytes and microglia in the adult rat hippocampus. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING： A randomized, controlled, neuroendocrinological, animal study was performed at the College of Medicine, Hallym University, South Korea between May 2008 and April 2009. MATERIALS： Methimazole, rabbit anti-glial fibrillary acidic protein （GFAP） antiserum, and rabbit anti-lba-1 antiserum were purchased from Sigma, USA. Rabbit anti-GFAP polyclonal antibody was provided by Chemicon, USA. Rabbit anti-lba-1 polyclonal antibody was purchased from Wako, Japan. Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP-biotin nick-end-labeling （TUNEL） kit was provided by Roche Molecular Biochemicals, Mannheim, Germany. METHODS： Hypothyroidism was induced in Wistar rats via methimazole administration （0.025%） in drinking water for 5 weeks, starting at 6 months of age. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES： Following methimazole treatment, hippocampai neuronal death was determined using TUNEL staining. The morphology and number of GFAP and lba-1 immunoreactive cells were detected by immunohistochemistry. Hippocampal GFAP and lba-1 protein levels were detected by Western blot analysis. Serum-free triiodothyronine and thyroxine levels were quantified. RESULTS： TUNEL-positive neurons were not observed in the hippocampus of euthyroid and hypothyroid rats. Rice tissue-specific promoters and conditiondependent promoters for effective translational application

Rice （Oryza sativa） is one of the most important staple food crops for more than half of the world＇s population. The demand is increasing for food security because of population growth and environmental challenges triggered by climate changes. This scenario has led to more interest in developing crops with greater productivity and sustainability. The process of genetic transformation, a major tool for crop improvement, utilizes promoters as one of its key elements. Those promoters are generally divided into three types： constitutive, spatiotemporal, and condition-dependent. Tran- scriptional control of a constitutive promoter often leads to reduced plant growth, due to a negative effect of accumu- lated molecules during cellular functions or energy consump- tion. To maximize the effect of a transgene on transgenic plants, it is better to use condition-dependent or tissue- specific promoters. However, until now, those types have not been as widely applied in crop biotechnology. In this review, we introduce and discuss four groups of tissue-specific promoters （5o promoters in total） and six groups of condition-dependent promoters （27 promoters）. These pro- moters can be utilized to fine-tune desirable agronomic traits and develop crops with tolerance to various stresses, enhanced nutritional value, and advanced productivity.

Effect of ulinastatin on the inflammatory response after video-assisted thoracic lobectomy in patients with lung cancer:a randomized controlled study

Negative oncologic impact of poor postoperative pain control in left-sided pancreatic cancer

AIMTo investigate the association between postoperative pain control and oncologic outcomes in resected pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC).METHODSFrom January 2009 to December 2014, 221 patients were diagnosed with PDAC and underwent resection with curative intent. Retrospective review of the patients was performed based on electronic medical records system. One patient without records of numerical rating scale (NRS) pain intensity scores was excluded and eight patients who underwent total pancreatectomy were also excluded. NRS scores during 7 postoperative days following resection of PDAC were reviewed along with clinicopathologic characteristics. Patients were stratified into a good pain control group and a poor pain control group according to the difference in average pain intensity between the early (POD 1, 2, 3) and late (POD 5, 7) postoperative periods. Cox-proportional hazards multivariate analysis was performed to determine association between postoperative pain control and oncologic *** total of 212 patients were dichotomized into good pain control group (n = 162) and poor pain control group (n = 66). Median follow-up period was 17 mo. A negative impact of poor postoperative pain control on overall survival (OS) was observed in the group of patients receiving distal pancreatectomy (DP group; 42.0 mo vs 5.0 mo, P = 0.001). Poor postoperative pain control was also associated with poor disease-free survival (DFS) in the DP group (18.0 mo vs 8.0 mo, P = 0.001). Patients undergoing pancreaticoduodenectomy or pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD group) did not show associations between postoperative pain control and oncologic outcomes. Choroidal and skin metastases from colorectal cancer

Choroidal and skin metastasis of colon cancer is rare. In women, the frequency of cutaneous metastasis from colon cancer as the primary lesion in is 9% and skin metastasis occurs in 0.81% of all colorectal cancers. We report a patient with colonic adenocarcinoma who presented with visual disorder in her right eye and scalp pain as her initial symptoms. Contrast-enhance orbital magnetic resonance imaging with fat suppression revealed an infrabulbar mass, and skin biopsy of the posterior parietal scalp confirmed adenocarcinoma. These symptoms were diagnosed as being caused by choroidal and skin metastases of colonic adenocarcinoma. We started palliative chemotherapy with oral capecitabine(1000 mg/m2, twice a day, on days 1-14) every 3 wk, which was effective at shrinking the brain masses and improving the visual disorder. This is the first report that capecitabine is effective at reducing a choroidal and cutaneous metastatic lesion from rightsided colorectal cancer.

Machine Learning-Based Two-Stage Data Selection Scheme for Long-Term Influenza Forecasting

One popular strategy to reduce the enormous number of illnesses and deaths from a seasonal influenza pandemic is to obtain the influenza vaccine on ***,vaccine production preparation must be done at least six months in advance,and accurate long-term influenza forecasting is essential for *** diverse machine learning models have been proposed for influenza forecasting,they focus on short-term forecasting,and their performance is too dependent on input *** a country’s longterm influenza forecasting,typical surveillance data are known to be more effective than diverse external data on the *** propose a two-stage data selection scheme for worldwide surveillance data to construct a longterm forecasting model for influenza in the target *** the first stage,using a simple forecasting model based on the country’s surveillance data,we measured the change in performance by adding surveillance data from other countries,shifted by up to 52 *** the second stage,for each set of surveillance data sorted by accuracy,we incrementally added data as input if the data have a positive effect on the performance of the forecasting model in the first *** the selected surveillance data,we trained a new longterm forecasting model for influenza and perform influenza forecasting for the target *** conducted extensive experiments using six machine learning models for the three target countries to verify the effectiveness of the proposed *** report some of the results.

Continuity control method of cutter posture vector for efficient five-axis machining

During five-axis machining of impeller, the excessive local interference avoidance leads to inconsistency of cutter posture, low quality of machined surface and increase of processing time. Therefore, in order to improve the efficiency of five-axis machining of impellers, it is necessary to minimize the cutter posture changes and create a continuous tool path while avoiding interference. By using an MC-space algorithm for interference avoidance, an MB-spline algorithm for continuous control was intended to create a five-axis machining tool path with excellent surface quality and economic feasibility. A five-axis cutting experiment was performed to verify the effectiveness of the continuity control. The result shows that the surface shape with continuous method is greatly improved, and the surface roughness is generally favorable. Consequently, the effectiveness of the suggested method is verified by identifying the improvement of efficiency of five-axis machining of an impeller in aspects of surface quality and machining time.

Development of twin wheel creep-feed grinding machine using continuous dressing for machining of aircraft rotary wing

The purpose of this study is to develop a twin wheel creep-feed grinding machine using continuous dressing to machine precise axisymmetric turbine blades that have been difficult to machine using a conventional creep-feed *** order to develop such a machine,3D-modeling and machine simulations were performed and a twin wheel creep-feed grinding machine was ***,the axisymmetric precision of the machined workpieces through practical machining was evaluated and the quality of the continuous dressing effect of the developed machine was *** addition,experimental considerations for a proper dresser-to-wheel speed ratio and proper feed rate of the dresser were carried *** a result,a twin wheel creep-feed grinding machine with continuous dressing is developed through machine simulation,manufacturing and performance *** condition for the dresser feed rate is 0.3μm/*** cases of large dressor-to-wheel speed ratio,grinding efficiency can be enhanced,but the surface roughness shows a conflicting *** twin wheel creep-feed grinding machine has satisfactory appraisal with regard to surface roughness,flatness,and *** surface roughness below 0.1μm can be obtained for the blade of ***,in order to perform precise machining,it is necessary to improve the structure of the twin wheel creep-feed grinding machine.

Inhibitory Effect of the Extract of Phellodendron amurense Ruprecht Root on Collagen-Induced Arthritis in Mice

Objective： To investigate whether the dried root of Phellodendron amurense Ruprecht（Phellodendri cortex; PC） extract improves arthritic symptoms through anti-inflammatory and immune-modulatory effects in collagen-induced arthritis in mice. Methods： Rheumatoid arthritis（RA） was induced in male DBA/1 mice by immunization with type Ⅱ collagen（ColⅡ）. CIA mice were divided into 5 groups（n=10 per a group） with normal, CIA control, PC extract（50 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg）-treated, and meloxicam（50 mg/kg）-treated as the reference drug. The PC extract or meloxicam were administered orally in CIA mice once a day for 14 days after arthritis induction. Arthritic score, levels of anti-ColⅡ IgG2a antibody, prostaglandin E2（PGE2）, tumor necrosis factor（TNF）-α, and interleukin（IL）-17 in the sera of CIA mice were measured. Histopathological changes in the ankle joints of CIA mice were also analyzed by staining with hematoxylin and eosin（H and E）, safranin-O and immunohistochemistry using anti-TNF-α and anti-IL-17 antibodies. Results： The arthritic score was increased in CIA mice in a time-dependent manner, as were the serum levels of anti-ColⅡ IgG2a antibody, PGE2, TNF-α, and IL-17. However, the oral administration of PC extract at 50 and 100 mg/kg in CIA mice significantly decreased the arthritic scores, and the serum levels of anti-ColⅡ IgG2a, PGE2, TNF-α, and IL-17 compared with those in the CIA group（P〈0.05 or P〈0.01）. Furthermore, histopathological improvement of the joint architecture in CIA mice was observed after administration of PC extract. PC extract also significantly inhibited the expression of TNF-α and IL-17 in the joints of CIA mice by suppressing the expression of their m RNA and proteins. Conclusion： PC extract may improve the pathological progression of RA through the inhibition of joint destruction by synovial inflammation and immune-stimulation, therefore, it would be a potential anti-arthritic agent in RA.
