Novel ternary metals-based telluride electrocatalyst with synergistic effects of high valence non-3d metal and oxophilic Te for pH-universal hydrogen evolution reaction

Electrocatalyst designs based on oxophilic foreign atoms are considered a promising approach for developing efficient pH-universal hydrogen evolution reaction(HER)electrocatalysts by overcoming the sluggish alkaline HER kinetics.Here,we design ternary transition metals-based nickel telluride(Mo WNi Te)catalysts consisting of high valence non-3d Mo and W metals and oxophilic Te as a first demonstration of non-precious heterogeneous electrocatalysts following the bifunctional mechanism.The Mo WNi Te showed excellent HER catalytic performance with overpotentials of 72,125,and 182 mV to reach the current densities of 10,100,and 1000 mA cm^(-2),respectively,and the corresponding Tafel slope of 47,52,and 58 mV dec-1in alkaline media,which is much superior to commercial Pt/C.Additionally,the HER performance of Mo WNi Te is well maintained up to 3000 h at the current density of 100 mA cm^(-2).It is further demonstrated that the Mo WNi Te exhibits remarkable HER activities with an overpotential of 45 mV(31 mV)and Tafel slope of 60 mV dec-1(34 mV dec-1)at 10 mA cm^(-2)in neutral(acid)media.The superior HER performance of Mo WNi Te is attributed to the electronic structure modulation,inducing highly active low valence states by the incorporation of high valence non-3d transition metals.It is also attributed to the oxophilic effect of Te,accelerating water dissociation kinetics through a bifunctional catalytic mechanism in alkaline media.Density functional theory calculations further reveal that such synergistic effects lead to reduced free energy for an efficient water dissociation process,resulting in remarkable HER catalytic performances within universal pH environments.

Improving the capacitance and energy density is a significant challenge while developing practical and flexible energy storage system(ESS).Redox mediators(RMs),as redox-active electrolyte additives,can provide additional energy storing capability via electrochemical faradaic contribution on electrodes for high-performance flexible ESSs.Particularly,determining effective material combinations between electrodes and RMs is essential for maximizing surface faradaic redox reactions for energy-storage performance.In this study,an electrode-RM system comprising heterostructured hybrid(carbon fiber(CF)/MnO_(2)) faradaic electrodes and iodine RMs(I-RMs) in a redox-active electrolyte is investigated.The CF/MnO_(2)with the 1-RMs(CF/MnO_(2)-I) induces dominant catalytic faradaic interaction with the I-RMs,significantly enhancing the surface faradaic kinetics and increasing the overall energy-storage performance.The CF/MnO_(2)-I ESSs show a 12.6-fold(or higher) increased volumetric energy density of 793.81 mWh L^(-1)at a current of 10 μA relative to ESSs using CF/MnO_(2)without I-RMs(CF/MnO_(2)).Moreover,the CF/MnO_(2)-I retains 93.1% of its initial capacitance after 10,000 cycles,validating the excellent cyclability.Finally,the flexibility of the ESSs is tested at different bending angles(180° to 0°),demonstrating its feasibility for flexible and high-wear environments.Therefore,CF/MnO_(2)electrodes present a practical material combination for high-performance flexible energy-storage devices owing to the catalytic faradaic interaction with I-RMs.

High prevalence of osteoporosis in patients with gastric adenocarcinoma following gastrectomy

AIM: To evaluate the prevalence and predictive factors of osteoporosis in patients with gastric adenocarcinoma after gastrectomy. METHODS: The study included 133 patients diagnosed with gastric adenocarcinoma but who did not undergo prior diagnostic work-up for osteoporosis. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and vertebral deformity was assessed by plain X-rays. We evaluated the effects of age, sex, body mass index (BMI), anemia, back pain, vertebral deformity, tumor staging, reconstruction type, and past medical history to determine predictive factors of osteoporosis in these patients. RESULTS: The prevalence of osteoporosis in the lumbar spine was 38.3% (male, 28.9%; female, 54.0%), and 15.0% in the femoral neck (male, 10.8%; female, 22.0%). The vertebral deformity rate was 46.6% (male, 43.4%; female, 52.0%). Age, BMI and hemoglobin correlated with BMD (P 64 years were independent predictive factors of osteoporosis in multivariate analysis. In females, back pain was an independent factor for osteoporosis. CONCLUSION: The results of this study revealed that prevalence of osteoporosis and vertebral bone deformity rate were high in gastric cancer patients, regardless of post-gastrectomy duration and operation type. Early diagnosis and a proper management plan must be established in these patients.

Therapeutic options are quite limited in clinics for the successful repair of infected/degenerated tissues.Although the prevalent treatment is the complete removal of the whole infected tissue,this leads to a loss of tissue function and serious complications.Herein the dental pulp infection,as one of the most common dental problems,was selected as a clinically relevant case to regenerate using a multifunctional nanotherapeutic approach.For this,a mesoporous bioactive glass nano-delivery system incorporating silicate,calcium,and copper as well as loading epidermal growth factor(EGF)was designed to provide antibacterial/pro-angiogenic and osteo/odontogenic multiple therapeutic effects.Amine-functionalized Cu-doped bioactive glass nanospheres(Cu-BGn)were prepared to be 50–60 nm in size,mesoporous,positive-charged and bone-bioactive.The Cu-BGn could release bioactive ions(copper,calcium and silicate ions)with therapeutically-effective doses.The Cu-BGn treatment to human umbilical vein endothelial cells(HUVEC)led to significant enhancement of the migration,tubule formation and expression of angiogenic gene(e.***.vascular endothelial growth factor,VEGF).Furthermore,the EGF-loaded Cu-BGn(EGF@Cu-BGn)showed pro-angiogenic effects with antibacterial activity against E.faecalis,a pathogen commonly involved in the pulp infection.Of note,under the co-culture condition of HUVEC with E.faecalis,the secretion of VEGF was up-regulated.In addition,the osteo/odontogenic stimulation of the EGF@Cu-BGn was evidenced with human dental pulp stem cells.The local administration of the EGF@Cu-BGn in a rat molar tooth defect infected with E.faecalis revealed significant in vivo regenerative capacity,highlighting the nanotherapeutic uses of the multifunctional nanoparticles for regenerating infected/damaged hard tissues.
